CGC COLLECTIONS

24 posts in this topic

Just wondering how many "slabs" people have in their PERSONAL COLLECTION. What CGC books have forum members decided to keep? I'll soon be making my 1st CGC submission(20 books), but I've bought a bunch of "slabs" over the past two years.

I think it would be interesting to see what everyone COLLECTS, and get some opinions on eachother's "PICKS".

  • THE_BEYONDER's PICKS
  • Werewolf By Night 37 MJ insert/double-cover
  • Star Wars 1
  • MTU 53
  • Iron Fist 15 signed by Byrne
  • X-Men 108
  • X-Men 142 & 143
  • Marvel Tales 98 & 99
  • ASM 61, 136, 185, 194, 195, 252(2), 265, 289 and 361

  • Ultimate Spider-man 1 Free Comic Book Day edition

What do I collect, eh?

Hmmm...

I'm working on a set of MTU from issues 1-25 in NM- or better.

Marvel Feature #11

Marvel Spotlight #5

Ghost Rider #1

Amazing SM 300

Hulk 162 and 181 (will be buying a 181 very soon)

The Cat

All Amazing Spider-Man

All Hulk

Silver and Bronze Detective and Batman

Bronze Horror

Defenders

And a few select Silver books that I really like the covers on.

Those are just a sample. There are others.

I have a weird range of books I collect.

Most are Bronze Age since that is what I read as a youngin'.

I just listed ALL of my books that are "slabbed". But, "collecting intentions" is precisely what I'm asking about.

I collect 9.0 or better Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Daredevil comics...I've got 150 or so CGCed copies of these. Most of that are the early Silver issues of these books; I prefer to buy books over $200 slabbed and under $200 raw except for the occasional 9.6 or 9.8 Bronze book. I've got 38 slabbed Spideys, 36 Fantastic Fours, 33 X-Men (most of these are 9.6 white copies between 96 and 142), and a few slabbed Thors, Daredevils, and Silver Surfers. I've also got Spectacular Spider-Man 1 thru 10 (missing #2) and Annual 1 in CGC 9.8 white.

Marvel S.A keys and non-key ASM's from 1962-1966. I try to get the best copies I can find or afford.

Most of the pre-66' stuff I already have are early ASM's in 9.2. The rest of my slabs are post-66' keys, mostly in 9.4-9.6. I've already got most of the post-66' books I want, so my attention is focused on the early stuff.

Wow, if we're listing just what CGC stuff we've got, I'm a lightweight. I have precisely two issues (had a third but sold it when I showed up here).

Here's my CGC collection!

Tomahawk 121 CGC 7.5

Korak 3 CGC 8.5

At least they are highly ranked --

The Tomahawk is the one and only graded copy == TOP CENSUS! smile.gif

The Korak is the 2nd best, placing behind a single 9.0 copy. smile.gif

Bought them both from Heritage earlier this year. Would like to get more, but price is an obstacle!

Now, what are my collecting goals? At one point I was going for every 1970 and 1980 Marvel. Don't know how far I've made it because I've not compared my inventory to a complete list, but there's lot of holes.

Pretty broadly I collect just about everything you can think of , so I'm working on completing runs of all sorts of titles. That's not to say that I don't have my favorites (ASM, Nexus, JLA, Warlord, Batman, Superman, etc, etc)

I typically hold out for a long time trying to get a really nice copy at a very nice price, but sometimes I take a deep breath and pay up for something special. Or give up and buy a low grade copy at a low price - eg, I bought low grade copies of Ghosts #1 and Forbidden Tales of Dark Mansion #1 this year already.

I own about 40-50 CGC Silver-Age books including:

Amazing Spider-Man #14 VF/NM

Avengers #1 VF+

Daredevil #1 VF

Strange Tales #110 VF+

and a few really cool Golden-Age books.

I do want to brag about a book I won today (Monday morning) which will be a nice addition to my collection. acclaim.gif Not only is it a neat L.B. Cole cover, but I got it for around guide value (and it is the highest and only copy certified). I feel like a proud papa (of course it will be a week or two before I can crandle it in my arms). cloud9.gif

Shock Detective Cases #21

This thread makes me think about the Registry for comics -- is anyone reading this who can say if that Registry is only for CGC graded comics? I was figuring on entering some of my collection into the Registry when it comes along, but if it is just for slabbed comics I won't need or want to bother. I would like to enter my collections but the grades would be the rough grades that I've determined, not a 3PG grade.
