Remember when a nice X-Men #200 was a major score?

Personally, I'm about ready to give up comics and collect something else.

But you'll still stick around to tell us how stupid moderns are, right? 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

no doubt, I think his next niche should be as a collector of Cleveland Steamers...

I'm sure a lot of people on these boards would help him out for free

when he's ready.

To me, it's never been about money, but you do get jaded after so many books pass through your hands.

I tried that... a couple of times. Everytime I think I'm out, they pull me back in.. insane.gif

Once I started selling all the time, the passion for my childhood hobby began to dissolve. I've been thinking about completely walking away alot lately.

Miss being a simple collector. frown.gif

Chris,

That happened to me about 10 years ago. The work of selling interfered with the joy of collecting to the point where I had to walk away. My girlfriend (now wife) encouraged me to get back in about 5-6 years ago and I have really focused on keeping my selling to an absolute minimum in terms of time/effort. it means I have a bunch of books lying around that I should sell but I am happy smile.gif

Hard to enjoy my collection when more & more of what I considered my "permanent keepers" are going out the door. Getting to the point that every book has a price tag on it, and the more it becomes a business...the less enjoyment I get out of it.

At this point, I'd like to sell off everything but about 50 books...and start all over.

You know, that can work. I literally got rid of all my moderns. Sadly, they were worth squat, so I only got 2 SA keys for them, but I'm definitely re-energized about collecting. I'm 28 and have been collecting since I was about 8 or 9. (So I'm about the 20 year mark collecting-wise.) Only thing is, my taste changed between 9 and 28 (shocking.) And the books I really wanted were ones I sold to pay for a move and I found looking at the leftovers was making me really depressed. (I know it's dumb but seeing a freaking ASM 400 when you knew you used to have a sweet 42 is a bummer.)

Anyway, working around to my point, I'm excited about collecting again. I'm getting all the issues I dreamed about having as a kid. My biggest problem now is deciding what books to get signed and which ones to display on the mantle!

That's kind of funny, I broke up with a girlfriend for acidentally sitting on one of my

moderns when it was unbagged and boarded - she didn't think it was a big deal that the

spine was now rolled - nor did she even apologize.

So I gave her the boot...

which issue was it? X-men 200 fresh off the LCS rack.

you could probably get a CGC 9.8 for about $40 now...

but honestly it was the principle of the thing...

too funny.

Don't feel bad, I had a girlfriend in college accidentally drop a record album on my VF copy of JLA #2. It left a pretty decent indent/hole. Luckily she was cute and I didn't pay a lot for the book. It was part of a sweet group I'd found at a Antique Store in Boulder Colorado including a B&B34, Showcase 30 etc all in high grade for a few hundred dollars. cloud9.gif

What happened to the album?!

Chris,

I came close to doing the same thing. When I re-started collecting, I made a list of 100 books that I wanted to get and kind of started over from there. Those are still my "A" books. And once I get one of those "A" listers, I only sell/trade to upgrade.

I've added a few small runs to that list like X-Men 144-201, and then X-Men 201-250 mainly to give me some less expensive books to chase. For instance, this year I've added Wolverine 1-189. And I keep a very few runs current [like Uncanny X-Men and Amazing Spider-Man] that I have complete going back 25+ years. But, I've fought the urge to collect everything like I used to.

I've thought about giving the hobby a break a couple times since I restarted collection a few years ago. Getting back into collecting seemed daunting. There were so many different books I wanted. In the end, I was amassing a lot of bits and pieces (nice books though!) but as a whole, my collection didn't really have an identity.

My solution was to totally refocus myself. I asked myself which characters do I like most and went from there. The end result: I completed a full Miracleman run, I'm working on a high grade Wrightson Swamp Thing run (I'm also collecting the Alan Moore run), and I'm in the early stages of a Silver/Bronze Spectre collection.

Narrowing things down has made collecting way more fun for me.

I came back after a while myself. I had a huge Batman collection (Golden Age to Present) and sold the whole thing. I collected a few other books to but got rid of all of it.

I returned and am now remamassing my Batman collection. With prices having gone up as they have with Golden Age, I have to settle for lower grades or no copy. Sucks, but that is life.

No the important lesson I learned. Stop collecting for a while but don't sell anything you will regret. It would help to get a second opinion as well from other collectors.

Yep, did the ol' "sell something I'd regret" when I sold a few Byrne/Claremont X-Mens to Mile High back in the late Eighties. Since then I've never sold anything I'd regret selling.

My Husband enjoys reading the war books I collect and he still hasn't mastered handling them carefully and has lower the grades on a few of my books. I don't think it's grounds for divorce, but he has been warned and is on probation and also banned from reading any high grade books in my collection.

He was shocked at how pis*ed I got and non-collectors I think just don't get it when it comes to how preciuos our books means to us. Christo_pull_hair.gif
