Published Art Vs. Commissions

Which do you prefer: Published Art or Commissions?

 

I personally like commissions better, contacting the artist and getting a personalized piece is great.

I love commissioned pieces because of the collaboration with the artist and being a part of the creative process (my commissioned are involved projects). Everyone of them has a little piece of me, or some bit of inspiration that came to me that makes me smile.

 

I love published pieces that evoke nostalgia, or demonstrate great storytelling technique, or are great examples of an artists style and skill, or that are a little slice of comics history.

 

Hard for me to choose one over the other, they are both sources of great joy.

This is an individual taste. I personally only collect published pieces so that it's easier to prove provenance in the future plus there's a certain allure to knowing that tens of thousands of people have looked at your artwork but you own the original one of a kind piece.

Back to OA, I only collect published stuff. I like some of the commision stuff I have seen, but prefer that published stuff.

For a while I was getting myself quite a few commission pieces (Madman or Delirium pieces) in addition to published stuff. That was true for when I was single/engaged, but post marriage, the art fund that I once had is now called a mortgage and I don't get to play so much any more. So when I do buy art, my preference has to be to go for the published stuff. As nice as a well done commission piece can be, the published page/cover from a title I read/used to read is where my interest is at.

 

I will get the odd commission piece should a nice ideal come to me, and the right artist be available, but it wont be often. And it will also play more to my broader tastes and not be so theme orientated either.

I've seen some stunning commissions (*ahem Chris*) and would consider getting one if Kirby were still alive (and willing to do them) or if Ditko was willing to do that sort of thing 27_laughing.gif

 

A great portion of my desire for OA is the nostalgic value of the pages being from comics I read as a kid. There's something about seeing it and remembering what it was like to read the story back in the days that those stories evoked a sense of wonderment and curiosity about what would happen next. cloud9.gif

 

 

It's definitely a personal taste as far as published vs commissioned art. No wrong answer. Collect what you like! thumbsup2.gif

I tend to collect published pieces. So far the only unpublished piece I have bought was my FF painting. I do like commissions too, but just haven't delved into them yet. I think my first true commission I have done will be done by whoever I choose to do the cover for my book.

I am waiting on two comissions, one from Josh Medors and one from David Finch. Finch has been incredible nice during the long emails, but the turnaround time is VERY VERY long, but him being in my top 5 favorite artist I could not past getting a comission from him during the limited time he was offering.

I've never purchased a commissioned piece. There are some stellar examples out there, you understand, some REALLY great stuff -- but there's some weak work that's been done, too. When the piece is a knock-out, I have alot of respect for the artist and his craft. When the end result seems like a rush job, or seems poorly done, I feel sorry for the buyer.

 

If you buy poorly done published art, well, that's something you knew up front (hopefully). Besides, my comic-colored dreams have always started on a published page.

Good point about not knowing how the commission will turn out, but knowing how the published piece looks because it is already created. I hadn't actually thought of that. That really would suck if you were waiting and waiting for months for a commission and you finally get it, only to say, "...Oh".

Overwhelmingly, my preference is for published pieces, with a strong bias for cover examples.

 

Commissioned pieces are highly-personal, leaning heavily towards the interests of the . . . commissioner. (Is that the right terminology? I mean, if someone's called Gordon, it would sound very funny to have a, 'Commissioner Gordon'?).

 

Someone here mentioned an admiration for Chris Cairo's 'Trophy Wall' series of commissions.

 

Having looked at some of this stuff, which is certainly very nice (and beautifully-illustrated in many cases), I'm left wondering if the novelty might wear off at some future point? It seems like a one-trick pony to me, and I only hope that Chris doesn't tire of the same theme regurgitated through a series of different artists?

 

Perhaps diversity is the way to go for commissions?
