I am sure this has been discussed, but i find this all very troubling.....jon

Jon;

This issue has been discussed in detail on the General Forum through various pressing threads. The key thread being the one where Steve B. confirms that CGC's parent company is holding talks with Chris F. in setting up a separate company under their umbrella to provide this exact (dis)service to the marketplace.

Anybody good at providing some links for Jon to review this topic so that we can get his insight on this very critical issue. Thanks!

What i also find troubling is that for books over a certain value, CGC charges a percentage of WHAT THEY THINK THE MARKET VALUE IS. Excuse me are they a "grading service" or a "valuation service". Also how do you spell c-o-n-f-l-i-c-t o-f i-n-t-e-r-e-s-t. My gosh, what is going on out there? Jon

Jon-

How about finding out for yourself FIRST HAND. As a lawyer you must know that hearing something and experiencing it are two different things. When CGC helps value a comic we DO NOT use even near top of the market. Ask people who have been "bumped up". We have had very little complaints by people who actually USE our service about how CGC decides what a book is worth, we are ALWAYS under the market. We do not want to dictate the market but, just like some lawyer fees , we want to get paid for the work we do and the value our customers say our service adds for them.

Also, in many cases, people send in books all the time through Walkthru thinking their books are worth a fortune, we also determine that the books should not be valued that high and correct it for them by crediting their account. This happens AT LEAST once a week. Someone sends a book in valued at $20,000 and after grading it turns out the book is missing a centerfold. Recieving finds out the real value is $3000, we credit the submitter $322 ou7t of their $400.

Hmm, maybe we should not do that since that means CGC is "making" the market. foreheadslap.gif Hmm, lets keep that money the uninformed collector and the ones who get ripped off by the over graders and/or con men like Dupcek give us foreheadslap.gif

I think I would rather do it the way we are and let the people who do not use or service complain.

BTW- I am sorry about this. Let's get back on the topic of great comic books, which is what this hobby is really about. Bring "politics" into it is a sure way to stagnate this hobby. Hell, look at 6 years ago, politics were rampant and the hobby was stagnant.

Increcible books! Thanks a lot for sharing them with us.

Since I signed on almost 3 years ago, I've been hoping that some

of the biggest collectors would start posting pictures of their

treasures. I think that's the very best thing that could happen

towards getting a new generation of collectors interested in comics.

Jon, I hope you understand what a huge contribution you are making

and how grateful most of us are to have you here.

Just to get back to comics, here's a repost of one of my own favorite

books for any Disney fans who signed on in the past 18 months.

CE_M2-2.jpg

As always, I am looking to complete my VF+ run of Mickey Mouse Mags

and early WDC&S and will pay unusual guide multiples for any book that

will help me upgrade.

Steve I hear all you say, but I am still troubled. Perhaps it is the "loss of innocence" in the hobby. However, I will save my other thoughts for another time. Oh, and I am a lawyer who charges by the hour for a task assigned, not for the value of the task in and of itself. (For those who think this is a digressing discussion, I apologize. Steve and I have known each other for too many years. smile.gif Anyway check out my post on Golden of Golden

Could not agree more. The Weird Science-Fantasy 29 and Fantastic 3 you posted previously have been the 2 most exciting books I have seen on these boards so far. Simply amazing. Keep 'em coming. By the way hkp, that MMM is sick. What a beut, looks like it was printed last week. hail.gif

BTW, liked the interview you did for Metro Jon, very informative.

I will be real brief so as not to unduly detour from the discussion on this particular thread, and I apologize for doing so, but I wish to follow-up on Jon's momentum. There are many rumours out there regarding the issues referenced above, and which run rampant through Marnin's post on his website. At a minimum, there are "appearances" of "potential" conflicts of interest involving CGC and Heritage (and others) that include but extend beyond pressing. I hear rants from dealers and collectors alike, and frankly I do not know what is true or what is not. I want this known in the open that I believe, presumptuous or not on my part, that many questions do require answers from those who effectively "hold" the power in this industry. The books I need and want (as if the two were different!) require the spending of money, the amounts of which incur shouts of "what the *(&)(% were you thinking" from those who do not understand our passion in this hobby/business. Nevertheless, this is nothing to joke about. I intend to and have been seeking answers and/or clarification from Steve and Jim Halperin. To date they have been responsive, and I have appreciated their courtesy, professionalism and, I certainly presume, their honesty. But I do still have questions.

Nuff said on this thread.

Mark

I haven't paid my comic dues like JB, so I might be really wrong about this, but I'm not sure there was ever a time that this hobby was "innocent." It seems to me that once somebody realized that comics=more $$$ than cover price, scams of all sorts would immediately abound, perpetuated by those with less than an admirable sense of ethics. I share many of JB's concerns, but I also wonder as to what has really been "lost"...other than cheaper prices in the OS!! 27_laughing.gif

I hate to muddy this thread so I'll be brief. I just want consistency, clear guidelines for all to understand and be held accountable to and if poor judgement/policy was used in the past, acknowledge it, correct it for the better and move forward. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

Back in the spring of 2004, I purchased an original owner collection of 42 Mickey Mouse Magazines through Mastronet. I was too

busy to post them at the time but wanted to give other Disney fans a chance to see what they looked like (most thumbnails link to

hires images - I'll fix the broken & missing links later). I bought this set to upgrade 3 issues in my own collection and sold

the remaining 39 to European collectors (privately & within 24 hours).

I am also posting this in the hope to get in contact with the owner of the high grade V5 copies that appeared in the CGC census

recently. If you are reading this and planning to sell these books, please send me a PM: I will pay well above FMV(!).

As always, I will also match or beat any price listed at GPAnalysis for most Barks Four Colors above CGC 9.2 and WDC&S 1-31 above

CGC 8.5.
