Premium % for better page quality???

18 posts in this topic

How important are the pages???

Here's a test scenario...

How do you view and value a given book when considering the page quality? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

For example: Here are the givens...

Example:

1.) More Fun Comics #65

2.) CGC Universal VF 8.0

3.) Priced (for arguments sake) at $4,000 with off-white pages

Now, place your value assessment (if significantly different) on same book with:

WHITE Pages............................?

Off White-White Pages................?

Cream to off white pages.............?

Light Tan to off white pages.........?

Cream pages.............................?

Tan Pages.................................?

Slightly Brittle Pages..................?

Brittle Pages..............................?

Edited to note: I don't think a VF book can have brittle pages blush.gif but this is just for the sake of learning your % differences for page quality in general. wink.gif

Just an idea of what I consider a fair deal given the same book, in the same grade(VF), but with varying page quality. Two things I attempt to stay away from: Rusty Staples and Brittle Pages.

WHITE Pages............................$4,400.00

Off White-White Pages................$4,000.00

Cream to off white pages.............$ 3,800.00 to $4,000.00

Light Tan to off white pages.........$ 3,500.00 to $4,000.00

Cream pages.............................$ 3,500.00 to $3,800.00

Tan Pages.................................$ 3,500.00 (?)

Slightly Brittle Pages..................Stay away

Brittle Pages..............................Won't touch it!

Don't know that I would hazard a guess for all of those scenarios Dizz, but I always give a bump for white pages, when buying OR selling.

I gave my example a bump for White pages only, from there it varies (meaning discount) from guide value. thumbsup2.gif

What about Light Tan to Cream pages?

What about Pink pages on a Fox book? 27_laughing.gifpoke2.gif

Works for me. thumbsup2.gif

Main thing is I would pay 10% more (or there around) for the same book with White pages. The rest I would negotiate and below Tan pages......no thanks.

I actually try to avoid anything cream to off-white and lower. Having owned a book that was labeled light tan to off white which should have been labeled slightly brittle, I have become a little nervous with CGCs page notations.

Every book I've bought that cgc called cream to off white were fried and borderline brittle. That's just not right.

This Batman #52 had cream to off-white pages, and aside from the halo around the outside, the pages were gorgeous. Even the creamy parts were still flexible and strong.

I've never been able to figure out the page quality stuff either. Here are two cream to off white pages.

This first one I agree with, the second one not so much. In both cases the pages are very supple with no chipping. God Bless Carl Barks, the guy could make a comic look like a movie.

Hmm very interesting pictures. I agree with the first one, but the second one.. I don't see anything cream about the pages. Seems more off-white to me all around if anything or even offwhite-white. Ahh I don't know..

In my limited experience buying GA slabs I've found CGC's cream through OW/W labeling to be rather inconsistent.

As to value increase/decrease it would depend on scarcity and cover importance.

Keep in mind with grading there are 25 choices to assign a book from .5 to 10. With page quality there are only 4 choices from the range of cream to off-white through white. Each choice has a much broader range of acceptability.

That looks nice. The books I've purchased from the Crippin collection have been pretty fried for 6.5's, particularly the tanning of the covers and pages. Like they were done in a hurry for a prefered client.

What about Poughkeepsie File Copy books that have a slight tanning on the inside front and back covers, yet are probably off white to cream page quality, yet have a fabulous ink reflectivity on the cover ?.I'd pay a 10-15% premium for those examples.

Anything below slight tanning I'd stay away from.
