Our policy on restoration is unconditional return. Our site says two weeks.....but we allow at least one year (not published) and on many occasions we have taken books back after several years.

 

I don't want to be Mr. Negative, but I have to post a response to the above statement.

 

At one time, SNE was the only ebay seller that I felt comfortable paying good money to for raw books. I was always very pleased with my purchases. They included a great Marvel Tales #1, Iron Fist #14 (later CGC graded 9.4), a full run of The Invaders and many others. After being a very happy regular customer of SNE, I sent a book that I purchased from you in to be graded. It came back restored. It was about 2 1/2 years after I purchased it. I contacted you to return the book. Perhaps this return policy you mentioned earlier was not in effect at the time, as you told me you wish there was something you could do, but you couldn't. Disgusted, I sold it on ebay in its purple label for a quarter of what I paid.

I used to do Hal's shows in my early days...late 80's, early 90's. They were a lot of fun. I still attend Hal's shows occasionally.....but for all kinds of reasons, I stopped doing shows, including San Diego and Chicago nealry ten years ago.

 

The smaller shows, like Hal's were impractical as Showcase got larger.

 

Funny you mention that. First time I saw you was at a comic show at UCONN in 1989 or 1990, I think it was put together by Buried Under Comics. You had a few boxes of mostly modern comics, mid 80's stuff. Man, were you pushy to sell me those Superman and Action Comics!

 

I was looking for Silver Age stuff, you didn't have too many back then.

 

And you could fit your inventory in the trunk of your car!

Maybe I was unreasonable to expect a refund. I'm not dwelling on it, but when I see a post that says "on many occasions we have taken books back after several years" I wanted to respond to it, because that is not the experience that I had.

Hey Dan,

 

From a "personal" side of things, Dan was able to grow his company incredibly fast, I was fortunate enough to meet him only a year or so into his business and was always treated fairly. He has a great tamily and loved his kids. More important then anything else in this world.

 

Oh and on a side note, he can play basketball!! For a big guy he could shoot....but he couldn't catch me :-)

Dan, why are you so nasty when you leave Negative/neutral feedback for people on Ebay? Wouldn't it be more professional to just state why you are negging them (non-payment, etc?) If you have an undconditional return guarantee, then are all these people non-paying bidders? Do you think the lack of scans, not mentioning tape on books, excessive shipping costs, etc contributes to this problem?

First tell Cindy I said "hello!" hi.gif and still remember her and her superior Customer Service!

 

Speaking of said Customer Service, you and Cindy always took care of me. One time only out of the dozens of transactions did I want to return some comics and the refund check was in my Office promptly. That one comic was Iron man # 6 that had excessive ink spray on the cover that the scan did not pick up.

 

I want to thank you publicly for all the time you spent on the phone with me and you treated me well, not as a competitor. And if you ever phoned me for advice or help, it would be provided without conditions.

I am here to try and set the record straight for anyone who has any questions about anything relating to Showcase New England and myself. All questions are fair game.

You mean, why doesn't he sell comics via his website and bypass eBay? (eBay gets millions of eyeballs which is probably the main reason.)

We could spend a lot of time talking about restoration. The reality is that no one wins when we sell a restored book.

 

Our current policy is that if a book we sell comes back from CGC restored...we will refund the purchase price, the CGC fee and shipping fees.

 

With proof of purchase from us...we will take back books up to two or three years old.

 

This does not happen very often as we don;t get many books returned to us for any reason. We might average 1 book or so per year being returned for nodisclosure.

 

As a matter of policy I never go out of my way to buy restored books for resale unless they are certified. This is because, at some point in time, I usually get blamed for not disclosing it....

 

It is not so common today because we have CGC...but in the 90's collectors/dealers would often buy books that I disclosed as restored....and resell them at some point in time failing to disclose the restoration. The end result was that we would get blamed for not disclosing the work to begin with. My opinion is that selling rstored books can only lead to touble in many situations.

 

I freely admit that books have gotten out of here on occasion that have been restored, or tampered with in some way....and without disclosure. This was never done intentionally.

 

I sat on a number of the Sotheby's and Christies grading committees. Often times my primary role was to detect restoration and disclose it for auction. It is fair to say that I have seen some amazing work....virtually undetectable in some cases.

 

The best work in the country....by far, was done by Mark Wilson....absolutely flawless and amazing work. Other types of restoration are nearly impossible to detect....a professionally done color touch on a dark spot of the book....some very, very minor trimming....the list goes on and on.

 

In fact trimming, minor trimming that is, is so difficult to detect that Experts such As Susan Cicconi sometimes had trouble with it. I know this first hand.

 

The worst experience I had with restoration was with an X-men #1 that I sold to collector Tim Hui. I sold it as an unrestored 9.4. After having had it for many years. Tim eventually sent it to CGC...long story short....it came back as a 9.4 with minor, professional restoration.

 

When I sold him the book...it was worth around $6000 (I'm guessing a little as I don't remember)...when he submitted it to CGC...it should have been worth $40,000.....so what to do???????? We worked out a solution that did not work out very well at time for Tim (sorry Tim.....wish we could do it over). he got most of his money back...but lost out on the books potential for appreciation.

 

The real question is at what time does a dealer stop being accountable for grading mistakes. Is it a year....10 years......a lifetime?????

 

The point is that sometimes books get out of here with restoration that has not been properly disclosed. It doesn't happen very often...but it does happen. Often times....the best thing you can do is try and make a situation right.
