CONNECTICUT COMIC SHOW - MAY 27 -

33 posts in this topic

There has been a perfectly fine comic book convention in East Hartford for thirty years.

It was "perfectly fine" when it was at the Knights of Columbus location...now it is cramped and sparse at the Holiday Inn location...

Is there a reason why it can't still be held at the KoC building? Seems to be roomier over there.

Please don't take this personally langur but ArAich is (at least partially) right. That show kicked *spoon* back in the day, but I watched it decline as more and more of the dealers who made it good, stopped setting up. Part of the problem, imo, was when Hal went to a monthly schedule. That show could not support a monthly schedule.

It's a shame that CT can't support shows the size of which New York or Boston gets. frown.gif

Please explain. Cramped and sparse? Be specific but do take into account the fact that the comic book market has shrunk 90% in the last 15 years so the same amount of space at todays prices would be foolish to rent since there are now 90% less potential customers. Do you miss the porn dealer or the frankenbook charlatan? Other than that there are plenty of comic books to satisfy 99% of the shows attendees. The guy that buys one book a show will not influence a dealer to set up and thats a fact.

It's a comic book show. No beanies, bootlegs or porn. Just comics and reputable dealers of the same.

Just out of curiousity, when is the next one being planned for E. Hartford? It's only a 20-30 minute trip from where I'm at, so I might take a spin by...

No kidding. But do we have a city with a large enough population to do so? That seems to be the reason the big cities get the big shows. At least we're closer to those cities than people who live in Idaho- do they HAVE a big city?-) (No offense Idaho-ites).

I, for one, am glad that there are no beanies and no porn. It's not that I have any problem with that stuff, but If I go to a comic show I want comics. I don't want space taken up by non comic stuff.

I went to one E Hart show earlier this year and the room was fairly large. Decent amount of space to move around in. The very next show was about half that size and didn't seem to have only half the dealers of the previous one. It was like the same room was cut in half. There was barely enough room to walk the isles. No joke, I nearly walked out then and there because I knew there would be little to no room to move around. I bent down to look through some floor boxes and had to constantly get up to let people move behind me.

The guy that buys one book a show will not influence a dealer to set up and thats a fact.

But what if I only bought one book because most of the dealers there didn't have the books I wanted. My eyes glaze over the dealers who bring box after box of discount moderns. And I see more and more of that all the time. There's one gentleman who sets up at just about them all and has only old books. And when I say old books I mean books from the 40's - 60's. Can't remember his name. He gets my business. Many of the other dealers do not. Hal also usually has a decent selection of older books.

So now it's my fault that the shows doesn't live up to expectations???... screwy.gif

I haven't gone to the show the last couple of dates because I was only seeing the exact same dealers with overpriced books that I don't want including porn and frankenbooks...

Methinks you should wake up to the reality that without comic book buyers/fans then there is no market...you as a promoter should know that...

BTW..."cramped and sparse" means the opposite of "spacious and chock full of stuff"... makepoint.gif

Not one of these statements makes sense.

A. Who said anything is your fault?

B. You have not attended a show here in 2007 but you know the exact dealers and their books? The porn guy has been gone a year and Mr. Frankenbook has never and will never darken one of my shows.

C. Buyers being those that buy books as opposed to buyers that don't buy books.

D. No it does not. A space can not be crowded and not crowded at the same time. You sound like Yogi Berra.
