OT: 5,000 IRR Call Ups

Ugh. Apparently the Army is contacting about 5,000 of us Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR) types who finished out time on active duty for "prescreening" and info "updating"-- i.e. see if we're still in decent enough shape to reactivate. Western Union telegram messages started going out July 6 and will mostly be finished by mid-August. A little over 78,000 in the IRR, so that puts me at what? 1 out of 15 chance? tonofbricks.gif

Seriously? I'm going to be pretty damn pissed off if I get called up. I know they told me about it when I signed on the line as part of my ROTC (my officer training program in college) contract, but what does an 18-19 year old kid know about that sort of stuff. I did my four years including a combat tour and really want to be finished. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

Sorry for the totally off topic rant. Just read a news article online a few minutes ago, and it's done a wonderful job of sinking my battleship.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming... yeahok.gif

I thought there were no political views allowed on these boards?

I sometimes have trouble distinguishing political views from simple common sense... confused-smiley-013.gif

What actually makes a view political? Does it have to be in step with a party line, be controversial, or just opposite of what other people think?

Other than a blog, I couldn't find the news item. Will you post a link?

Also, they are most likely calling up linguists and other specialists rather than your average (yo) Joe. If you are MI or maybe Signal, you might get a call but even your average combat branch officer probably won't get the call.

Perhaps you should step out of the posting limelight if you're having trouble confused-smiley-013.gif

I served my active duty time as well, and I thank you for your service to our country. However, I do take issue with the fact that you are complaining about this. You state that you knew when you signed up, yet now you are vocal about the 1 in 15 chance of being recalled to serve your country.

Sorry, I have little empathy or sympathy for that. Just one Veteran's opinion.

Go in wearing your Mom's wedding dress. And lipstick smeared inexpertly across your mouth like an angry slash.

Seriously, at this point the 'mission' is one big pointless meat grinder. I want you to stay home and all of our other young men and women back safe and sound.

Didn't work for Cpl. Klinger.

Fear not. This was just a late night venting. And comicparadox, if I get called, I get called. As a vet, you know the deal- you don't have to like everything you get handed from Uncle Sam. And I am more fortunate than others in that I was a Field Artillery guy- a branch that is getting significantly down-sized w/ personnel being retrained for new jobs.

27_laughing.gif , on the good side of things (and bringing it somewhat back to comics), going back to captain's pay would be a big income boost from teaching, so I think that would be plenty justification for picking up some early Marvel SA keys I've been drooling over wink.gif

The Marines are doing the same thing. Calling up anyone that was in a 'critical' MOS (job). The unit i just left has about 35 inbound, all helicopter maintenance. I don't know if any news items are on the web, but i do know I saw plenty of people with check-in sheets that thought they were done frown.gif .

just 5 more,

Mike

Good luck in getting the outcome you hope for. I know you were made aware of the possibilities when you signed up, but I doubt more than a couple of people who have signed up for any of these programs in the last 10-15 years envisioned a military conflict that would have (at this point) dragged on nearly as long as Vietnam did and plenty longer than WW II.

From another Vets perspective -

I hate this war, I am not for the cause but I am for the troops

that stick their necks out on a daily basis.

I hope one day we can find a way to end this

while saving face at the same time -

I just don't see how that can happen.

I pulled my Active and Inactive and honored my contract.

The phrase "Signing your life away" is about as real as it gets.

They slap a number on you and that is all you are.

After serving a couple of years of active I mentally accepted my own death.

I did this because it was the only way I could keep myself sane.

Before I did that I would almost crack-up - because when I went on deployment

I couldn't help noting that my leaders were very pea-brained and I was going

to die with these *spoon*.

Peace be with you and

Stay Brave.
