Are there any good stories left to tell?

We talk about this silver age story arc was the best and that bronze or copper age story arc was the best, are we all just being nostalgic or are all the modern day story arcs a retcon and/or rehash of what we have already seen? The only new books I pick up are Astonishing X-men and Uncanny X-men. The former is an okay read, but the later mainly keeps my run going.

Go search in the Modern section. There's lots of great reads out there. Unfortunately for you, you'll have to divest yourself of your precious X books, the superhero fixation, and probably go buy some DCs.

Check out:

Planetary

Fables

100 Bullets

Early issues of the new Jonah Hex

For superhero books, yes. It's all just one big What If Universe - heII take a look at old What If's and you'll see most have already been done as MU Moderns. doh!

But that's what the old fogey readership wants, new takes on old GA, SA and BA heroes - greybeards feel more comfortable with the old standbys, so writers hack away and give it to them, POS stories as they may be.

That's why new heroes don't work, and Marvel's biggest success has been to Ultimatize the existing SA crop.

Okay if we want our heroes to stay the same, then maybe what we need are some really cool new villians. Villians that stay villians. The last great villians I remember showing up are Venom, Carnage, Mr. Sinister, Hobgoblin and I have always had a soft spot for a Brood story arc.

How about a 5 year story arc involving every DC and Marvel Comic along the lines of "Crises". Yeah, what we need right now is another "Crises" Maxi Series involving both the DC and Marvel Universes.

Hmmm....throw in a good "Clone" twist for good measure maybe in the 3rd or 4th year.

BUT....in order for this to really work....everybody should die at some time during the story arc. Then....when it's over...everyone who died, lives.

Also important...every issue should have at least 5 variant issues with each of the variants being tougher to find than the one before it.

Make all the issues 80 page giants too. Yeah...now there's a good idea. Everyone should also buy 2 copies of everything. That way, when the movie comes out in 20 years they'll have an extra copy to sell to the future collectors of the hobby.

This could work. :)
