BRONZE AGE SURVIVOR SERIES SHOOTOUT!!

56 posts in this topic

Okay, Shadow has given me the official okay to set up the Bronze Age Survivor Series, and to avoid as many *issues* as possible, I thought I'd start a thread where you could all scream and yell about which comics belong and which should be gone.

A couple of ground rules. I went through the previous BA thread and collected all the suggested issues I felt were relevant and important enough for inclusion, so let's stick with hammering on the existing list of books. Also, there are (I think) 39 entries right now, so feel free to state how many you'd like to see included. Don't worry if it's too little or too much, just shout it out.

Here's the list:

X-Men 101 (First Phoenix)

X-Men 141 (Days of Future Past)

I like it. If I was narrowing down to, let's say 35, I'd probably bump MTU #1, X-Men #141 (like New Teen Titans #1, I'd consider this Copper Age but I think it's been debated before. Maybe the best story on the list, BTW. ), ASM #101 (Morbius isn't a big deal if you ask me.), Superman #223 (I'm unclear to it's importance.)

I'd have no problem with them either. But, trust me, it's a lot to type out each time. Of course, I was too lazy to place the list in Word and just copy/paste to the Polls. lol

I recommend cutting, with reasons:

Amazing Spider-man 101 (First Morbius) -- Morbius? Who cares? The other spidey books are more significant.

Cerebus 1 (First Cerebus) -- Not really a Bronze book. More copper/modern.

Giant-Size X-Men 1 (First New X-Men) - Just declare this one the preemptive winner and let us argue over 2nd to nth place.

Marvel Premiere 1 (First Marvel Try-Out/Warlock) -- ZZZZ. Ultimately insignificant. DC was doing try-out books back in 1956.

Marvel Team-up 1 (first new Spidey/Team-up book) - Also insignificant.

Swamp Thing 1 (Swampie in Own Mag) - HoS 92 is a better entry.

X-Men 141 (Days of Future Past) -- More a copper/modern book.

The more the merrier I say. It's not like we have some sort of time limit to worry about. I thinks it's fun to listen to everyone's opinions and it's a chance to learn about a few books we may not all know about.

Add one more, make it 40 and fire the starting gun

I'd let Marvel Premiere #1 have a chance. Warlock was pretty cool in the BA. If he was gone I'd say the same would go for Deathlok, who I think is an even more minor character.

I think Swamp Thing #1 is pretty iconic in the BA. I'm biased as I love those 1st 10 books.

I agree on the others.

That's a good point, and I think it's far better to let them fight it out, rather than simply picking books to delete, and ticking someone off.

After all, the top echelon is fixed, but who really knows how far some books would go? 30th, 20th, 10th? (shrug)

Damn. I've agreed with JC twice tonight. Something strange is going on. Let's start with the 40 books!

What do you think #40 should be? (My choice notwithstanding. lol )

If anyone wants fewer books, speak now...

but keep in mind that we'll probably have to eliminate 2 books a round for the first bit, just to get it manageable.

Since you put all that time and effort into running the SA series, did such a good job, and got high marks from the forum, I think the 40th comic should be...

X-Men 121

lol

#40 should be Batman 227. I know the storyline is "okay," but considering the immense popularity and recent surge in cgc slabbed prices, it definitely deserves a nod. Will it go Top 10, definitely not, but it SHOULD be included in the top 40.

Just my 2c

Just going to throw out some books that are missing that were pretty big at the time. Not necessarily arguing they should be on the list (although I think a couple of them should be), just having fun and remembering good times.

Kamandi #1 (big book at the time, and Kirby's most popular DC series)

Star Wars #1 (this came out well before the movie, as I recall, and was a major event)

First Issue Special #8 (first Warlord by Grell)

Savage Tales #1 (Conan, plus first Man-thing)

FF #112 (Hulk vs. Thing)

Howard the Duck #1 (nuff said!)
