  1. Is that #9? OK for me to upload to GCD? Thanks, Jack Jack, The cover above is for Blue Ribbon #4. I posted the cover on the GCD website today as requested. There seemed to be some confusion about which issue this was and I hope that it is clear now. For confirmation, check the Gerber guide. bb I was confused. (Is that even worth mentioning when it comes to the numbering of some of these old throwaway series?) You're confirming that Blue Ribbon (St John) 4 and 5 (cover title Teen-Age Diary Secrets) are NOT the same as Teen-Age Diary Secrets (St John) 4 (noted in OS as oversized 9/49) and 5 (noted in OS and GCD as unnumbered, also 9/49). Those last two are not shown in Gerber, at least under the Teen-Age Diary Secrets title. Looks like you've got it all straightened out at GCD -- thanks. Nice to get these Baker covers straightened out, and it provides a chance to ogle his drawings of hot babes in tight dresses for noble, archival purposes. Jack Here is a bump from page 5. I think Jack straightened this one out a few years ago. My copy is still raw.
  2. OK, my wife said it (#3) was probably Doug Kenney and Robert Hoffman of the National Lampoon reading Mad on their radio show. I had no clue but she has a wider knowledge of pop culture than I. I like Chevy in Lampoon's Vacation and "Bored of the Rings" was a perfect follow up after reading the Hobbit and the Ring Trilogy but I wasn't a big reader of either Mad Magazine or the Lampoon. I prefer reading a murder mystery and a stack of golden age comics. Or watching a moldy old movie like Topper or Red River.
  3. [font:Times New Roman]You may have missed one on #14, although technically she isn't reading the Mad magazine. If I'm not mistaken that's Linda Eastman (McCartney) doing Jimi's hair prior to the Miami Pop Festival (1968). She dyed blond streaks in his hair that can be seen in the bonus footage from the concert included on the Hear My Train a-Comin' documentary (coming out in November). [/font] I knew it was Jimi but couldn't determine the identity of the woman even with the help of the internet. thanks? how about #3? It probably isn't George W.
  4. I like this cover a lot but I think it has been heavily photoshopped. I am still looking for a better copy.
  5. Not enough pinball stories in the golden age but there were a few bowling alleys.
  6. I think that must be Strange Worlds #5 Jimbo... Correct. That is IFC Strange Worlds #5.
  7. I have never found a newspaper with th Flamingo strip but I did see some of the original art for sale.
  8. Obviously Warp Drive was invented to deliver fresh bagels to the gamma quadrant...
  9. I got a chuckle out of the background ad in this splash from Strange Journey. ZZSLE and WZZT BAGELS Bakers to the Universe
  10. Cowboy humor by JR Williams was unique and probably a Sunday highlight but I remember reading his Out our way in the daily pages. They were reprints from the thirties and other people drew the strip after he stopped.
  11. A lot of Bronc Peeler stories were reprinted in the comics and Red Ryder comics had lots of other strip reprints, like Captain Easy and King of the Royal Mounted
  12. There were a lot of great Whiz covers around Dec 1943. I posted this in the Fawcett group but it is was also a good time for Capt. Marvel Jr. (from 1942-143).
  13. What a wonderful tribute to Kelly. He was a voice of reason in confusing times. His daily strip contained the political satire that had only previously been achieved by the political cartoonist of Punch and other magazines of the day. And he could turn the strip into slapstick vaudeville comedy to entertain millions. He also told wonderful children stories filled with soft images that endeared him in the minds and hearts of young fans. When we discussed Kelly in BZ's thread, many people posted their issues of Pogo and Fairy Tales. When we discussed Pogo in the GCD chat group, Jerry Bails said he had them all...
  14. These covers are fun to see and Master 41 has the Crime Crusaders story.
  15. Here are some by Kinstler, Kubert and Wood. Another problem with reprints of some of these comics was the elimination of the illustrated index page used in Avon comics. Fox comics included a Splash page inside the front cover which was also eliminated in the reprints.
  16. I thought this splash was by Kinstler until I saw the Hollingsworth signature. This is from Eerie by Avon which had several of these very artistic renderings inside the front covers of their comics. Kinstler and Wood were obvious contributors but other artist did them as well. Is there a list?.
  17. That is kind of a surprise. I didn't know a copy that good still existed. Is it the highest rated on record?
  18. I didn't know the Gasoline Alley was rare. I guess it fits in there with some of my other favorite Cole covers.
  19. and this one may be a Supersnipe imitator.
  20. I posted this Longago a while back but it is worth posting again. More work by Briefer from Boy 5.
