  7. St. John provided illustrations for this Hitler story in Amazing.
  8. A couple of pulps group shots. After I took the first picture, I thought it might work better if done alphabetically. ...where did I put that other box of Amazing pulps. I guess I could add a couple of fillers and add the rest of the Amazings to the Argosy pulps next time. OK?
  9. That is an Alter Ego #2 reprint and Rocket's Blast #14 original. Jerry never sent me any of the first three issues until 1997 or so. I ordered issue #3 in 1961 or 1962 but it was worth the wait. bb
  10. Some zines from the magazine boxes
  11. I always thought of that cover as a Hitler/Tojo cover and forgot about the war bonds ad. Purchased off the back of a pickup truck at a flea market. bb
  12. I think August and Alex combined to do US Fliers in Action
  13. I think those are Westland Whirlwinds on the prowl. A nifty looking plane which reminds me of the speedy Mosquito that was made out of plywood. The Germans made the "flying pencil" out of aluminum which should be light but I don't think it moved as fast as the Mosquito. Jets were pretty fast but entered too late to make a difference. Most of that war was was fought with technology that was developed in the thirties. The Rolls Royce Merlin engine was designed in 1933, improved with a two stage supercharger and placed in every type of plane possible.
  14. WOW Where have been shopping to come home with all those lovelies? Recent means in the past few months or so. The Crackajack, with the Giant Plane cover, was from Flatrock a few years ago but I don't think I posted it before. It is kind of a poorman's Marvel Mystery 44. The rest are mostly off ebay.
  15. The Junkers Ju 86 bomber is also pictured on this cover of Flying Aces. Artwork is by August Schomburg. December 1939 August knew every plane of WWII it seems. However, I don't think a Spitfire would have to ram a Junker. They could blow them out of the sky due to their superior performance especially at high altitudes. The Rolls Royce engine was so superior to anything else made during the war, it was also used in the Mustang P-51 and made in the USA based on Rolls Royce specifications.
  16. That is one of my favorite stories too. I have a Red Circle copy of that and a couple of reprints...which I also read again.
  17. I will try for an issue. Mostly I have memories of Fosdick stories and a black and white reprint. I could use a few more comics...
  18. It could also be a Junker 86. The turret could be lowered in flight and the tail is the same. Many of the German aircraft were photographed during the Spanish Civil War and probably the photos were used as models for these covers.
  19. For many years Bowling Green University used to offer the Sampson books for sale at big discounts at their annual clearance sale. I bought my copies of volumes 1 - 5 at prices averaging around $7 each. I also bought Deadly Excitement Shadows & Phantoms, Spider, and The Night Master at prices of 30 - 70 % off retail. I don't know if they still hold their annual sales but it would probably be worth writing to them to ask them. I lived in Toledo during the late sixties but was unaware of any collection in nearby Bowling Green. What do they have there now? Ohio State has the Caniff collection and MSU has all of Jerry Bails' microfilm, plus many other volumes of comics, strips, fiche, etc. Is the V.T. Hamlin collection in Missouri?
  20. I think you must have seen these Grumman Avengers and wondered. I originally thought they were Dauntless dive bombers but the design isn't the same. Art by Heath
  21. The promotional comics post was inspired by the acquisition of the "Fearless Fosdick and the Case of the Red Feather" comic. Red Feather organization was the precursor to the United Way and it funded the polio research that led to the vaccine from Lederle where I used to work. I think there is a Donald Duck and the Red Feather also (which I would like to have). I don't have any other Fearless Fosdick comics but I have other issues with work by Capp. He produced books for several public service projects. The characters were immensely popular in the fifties and inspired the production of at least two movies. One with Julie Newmar as "Stupefying Jones". Here are some other comics from the Fearless Fosdick box.
  22. Over a year ago we were asked by Scrooge to determine the type of aircraft on this Lightning cover. I don't think I came up with a good answer at the time but after seeing a current news article on Yahoo, I decided it looks a lot like the Dornier-17. I could still be wrong and it may have been identified two years ago but I like to say the name, the Fliegender Bleistift (Flying Pencil).
