  1. So is that a Cole creation or did he take the skull from Matt Baker's art.
  2. What I am trying to say is the other other companies, like Atlas, Star and Harvey, were dripping with talent but EC used stories by Feldstein, Craig and Bradbury and a host of other writers and produced a consistently good product, e.g., this splash from Harvey's Chamber of Chills is oozing talent.
  3. I really enjoyed the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will the Circle be Unbroken" album back in the seventies. I saw Doc Watson perform on stage a few years after that album came out and been a fan ever since. Not that big on Bill Monroe but like Merle Travis.
  4. I am thinking that this illo is a combined effort of Baker and Cole does anyone recognize where the characters at the top of splash came from?
  5. Nice lab scene! From Startling Terror Tales? Jack Yes, that is the interior of Startling Terror Tales 10. It is also a reprint of the Dr. Jekyll story published by Fox.
  6. Hey, I already asked that stupid question but I am glad someone else had to ask.
  7. This was supposed to be a question about the art. I think Cole created some spectacular covers and some of the interiors were by Palais, Baker and Disbrow which were equal to the EC artists. Inconsistant stories and art and poor reprints brought down the quality of Star. But the covers by Cole are more than a match for anything done by EC artists. Feldstein is a favorite of mine and I have to give credit to him for originality. I think Cole must have redrawn this Baker splash panel from Star's All-Famous Police.
  8. I also found a scan of the Strange Stories issue with the Schomburg illustrations. He probably did more work for Better Pubs Sci Fi before and after he did the comic covers.

  10. BZ, I picked up a bunch of scans recently and found some Schomburg illustrations. Do you have all of the early Strange Stories issues? AS did some horror as well. I didn't know that the Radio Man author had teamed up with Alex.
  11. But EC had Feldstein and great writers and that makes a difference.
  12. And if you are looking for this story in Terrors of the Jungle, you will be disappointed but you can find it in Spook 28.
  13. and Yah, the Blue Bolt had reprint material and so did this one but the covers were Wow!
  14. Cheetah - which auction was this? Those are AMAZING. Man, the quality of the EC art was so far beyond their competitors'. (Hope I'm not stepping on any toes.) I think Star Publications were of equal quality if not better.

  16. BZ, I think you mentioned you were a fan of Castle Frankenstein. I picked up this issue at my neighbors house during a garage sell. My friend Glenn collected Famous Monsters but I had a few in my collection. I think this was one I purchased at the local Rexall Drug Store. I enjoyed those Ray Harryhausen movies and Tim Burton's work as well. Too bad CGI has displaced the old technology but perhaps there is still some room for growth in the media. The guy pictured on the cover was basically the same for Sinbad and 20 Million Miles to Earth.
  17. I still have a bunch of paperbacks that I purchased at the drugstore back in the sixties. This might be one of them.
  18. I started collecting paperbacks several years ago and picked up some Avons and a few Charlie Chan mysteries. Avon cover art tends to be pretty sensational.
  19. That was great. The timing of each picture with the music was perfect. Now we need an intro to BZ's collection or Pat's. I suggest "Also sprach Zarathustra". My collection would require something more chaotic like Stravinsky's "Rites of Spring" with a gorilla throwing my coverless comics and pulps around my office.
  20. I have a coverless copy of Master 35 somewhere but the cover is what makes it so spectacular. And by the way, there is no Flame story in Master 35. Jolly Roger is the villian in the CMJ story. Master 71 has the Man in the Metal Mask story which is more like the Flame seen on the Master 35 cover. Perhaps Fox had a patent on the character.
  21. I am not sure where I posted the last group of Cheslers but here are a few more. I think I have 3 or 4 more but they are more cartoony than the early Punch.
  22. I got strung out on Jumbo comics for a while but managed to shake the habit. I recommend going cold turkey or taking a Disney comic substitute which is non-addictive but filled with wholesome goodness. Or maybe it is more addictive. There are hardbound collections, reprints from Whitman, Gladstone and Gemstone and cartoons and merchandise. Help, stop me, more GGA please! Whew! That's better.
  23. OK, two more Planet Stories covers and I will stop loading up pulps but I do like those dragon covers which were never used so much in the comics... but it amazes me how easy it is for most SciFi to slip into fantasy with a few wands, witches and dragons. Oh this one I showed before.
  24. This one was touched up a lot in photoshop but I love the spider on the cover.
