  1. I'm fully in agreement with Zonker on this one... I was going to suggest Superman first, Batman second. My reasoning is that you're planning to hold the book(s) for what sounds like 30-50 years (without knowing your age)... And with that type of long-term plan, it seems to me that you want to absolutely stick with the iconic aspect that Zonker mentions. If you had to bet on Golden Age characters who'll *definitely still be around in 30-50 years, who would you put your money on? Beyond Supes, Batman, and a couple other heros (Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash), the only others I can think of are Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, since it's safe to say that Disney will never let those characters leave the limelight. But funny animal stuff, much as I love it personally, doesn't have the broad fan base today that will ensure significant appreciation over decades, at least not to the extent that the superhero characters will. World's Finest seems like a good choice, along with the eponymous titles for Supes and Batman, and of course Detective and Action... Good luck!
  2. "fairly positive" an 8.5 exists? Why I oughtta...you young whippersnapper Bronze/Modern collectors and your fancy-shmancy "commonly and comparatively cheaply available in 9.8" supply of comics tick me off. ......I didn't know it was possible not to know that. Okay, my bad... of course there's an 8.5 grade... I guess I forgot 'cause 1) I haven't seen many CGC 8.5s 2) I'm usually checking the boards from work In that case, maybe the point is misguided... CGC does see a significant difference between 8.0 and 9.0, making the regrading of that book even more egregious...
  3. Another, related question... Say the 'average' resub 'success rate' - meaning a jump in grade of at least .2 after resubmission - is 33%. Is a 33% 'success rate' sufficient to warrant the cost of resubbing? Let's say you resubmit three books, and they're all 9.2s initially. One of them comes back a 9.4, the other two are graded 9.2 again. To what extent is this sufficient to justify the resubbing? If the books in question are all Hulk 181s, the answer is obvious. But if the books in question are Daredevil 127 or ASM 110, would the jump of .2 on one book more than make up for the ~$120 you're paying for resub (with insurance and shipping costs factored in) ??
  4. This is very interesting... I wonder how often this particular jump in grade occurs on resubs that begin as CGC 8.0 ...? If this is at all commonplace, it would seem to point to the fact that even in CGC's eyes, the difference between 8.0 and 9.0 is pretty minimal. I can understand a 9.2 jumping to 9.4, or 9.4 to 9.6... but 8.0 to 9.0 ? That seems more dramatic, even though I realize there's no 8.5 that CGC could award the book in question
  5. [stuffs own feet in mouth] ...so now I gotta go unearth the damned comic from 35 boxes' worth o' stuff? Ahhhhhhhhh.... Okay, I'll be the nudnik for the duration if that's the alternative to finding that lone story from among 150-odd issues of Jughead I stand dejected, but only slightly!
  6. Okay... *maybe* I stand corrected.. it *has* been 25 years since I read that particular story, and it would probably take me that long to find it again Or maybe MLJ has revised history here? I'm truly confident that in the original story, Jughead said his middle name was "Pforsythe," with the "P" being silent... But I've been wrong before ... although there are no surviving witnesses in that previous instance...
  7. I love the "Squirrel Hill Institute" urban legend... that's classic. The fact that the acronym (whether you go with "Technology or "Tigers" as the last bit) spells out SH*T is lost on you folks? I don't believe that answer for a minute, even if Bob Montana says it with a straight face. Bug, you're close enough, I'll give ya the answer: "Pforsythe." Don't blame me, that's straight from MLJ... Okay, there it is in print: Pforsythe... HepKitty, does that do anything for you?
  8. No, "Pendleton" is what some nudnik on Geocities *thinks* Jughead's middle name is... but that's not correct. One hint, and not a very broad one at that... There was a story in a Jughead from roughly 1968 in which Jughead reveals his middle name...but when he does so, he's overheard and the girls go wild, and chase him around like he's one of the Beatles (no actual Beatles reference in the story, I'm embellishing here)... No real explanation for why his middle name has this effect on women, but this is an Archie comic we're talking about In that story, Jug tells Archie his middle name - and it ain't Pendleton.
  9. Man... tough crowd! What did Jughead ever do to any of you except make the world a safer place for burger-lovin', wimmen-hatin' guys? Now I'm not going to tell you what the middle initial "P" stands for... so there!
  10. Actually, it stands for "Syphillus." It was designed in the same spirit that gave us Hester Prynne's scarlet "A." That explains everything, Major! lmao ... no wonder he wanted nothing to do with women. I guess we should be glad Jughead didn't end up like Idi Amin...
  11. Given that the MLJ "Sabrina" appeared 25 years after Juggy started wearing the shirt, I'm guessing it's unrelated Besides, Jughead HATES girls - the "S" has to stand for "Sandwiches" or something...
  12. That's a great question...!!! As a dyed-in-the-wool Jughead fan, I'm ashamed to admit I don't know... **But I DO know what his middle initial P stands for...
  13. I'm happy to email you my Excel template, though I'm not sure you'll wanna use it... it's pretty basic. Columns for "Box #," "Title," "Issue #," "Condition," and value based on the past few years' OS Guides... You could easily add more columns for notes of various kinds. Best thing about this approach, IMHO, is the ability to sort all the data in myriad ways. It's easy to look at all the first issues, or all the books in NM 9.4 and above, or all the books worth more than $XXX... Garth
