  1. So the marketplace has already had McFarlane Spidey covers exceed and match prices of John Byrne Uncanny X-Men covers.

By all pre-auction estimates, the Jim Lee X-Men 268 cover is about to do the same.

    The generational shift is here.

Even with an evolving artistic style, Jim remains as popular as ever.  Being a DC executive clearly has its advantages since Jim can probably dictate what projects he wants to work on and with whichever creative team he wants.  Byrne had power and influence in his day but not like what Jim has had at DC.

  2. Scott was the largest modern era dealer at the time. I do recall the coin flip stories.

I also recall him repping Bolland and bringing over all those Animal Man covers to SDCC.  I was familiar with Bolland's work on Judge Dredd but Animal Man was not a title I followed. IIRC Prices were between US$500 - US$1000.  Unheard of at the time.

When Scott left for Wildstorm, that opened the door for Albert, (and others), to expand exponentially.

  3. What's the difference between the X-Men 268 (1990) cover and the David Finch 494 X-Men (2008) cover?

    About 18 years of nostalgia.

Both are iconic generic inventory covers that will always get top $.

Kudos to the seller for hanging onto the Jim Lee cover for as long as he did.  The patience pays off.

As for Scott, $650 was a lot of money back then for an up and coming artist.  I think Scott's done just fine over the long haul.

  4. If you are concerned about California wildfires, a "fire proof" safe probably wouldn't help.  If the fire is that serious, after a few hours, the safe itself will act like an oven and heat up all contents inside.  They are also super heavy so you may need to reinforce the floors.

Home safes are fine if the fire is put out quickly.

  5. 1) I once bought a complete issue and cover directly from the artist because that's how he wanted to sell his art.  It wasn't cheap either.  All I wanted was a DPS from the issue.  I ended up buying it and held onto it for years.

I never cared for the story or the cover.  After years from other collectors asking about pages, I broke up the issue and sold individual pages and the cover.

I made some $ and I still have the DPS.  So in hindsight, the artist did me a favor.  xD

    2) I still have a complete Infantino / Giella Flash back-up story.  No cover obviously.  9  1/2 pages from DC.  The last 1/2 page was used for advertisements.  First appearance of Professor West, (Iris' father), before he was retconned as Detective Joe West for the tv show.  :whatthe:

You can still have a complete story but not the complete issue.

  6. It should not impact value of the art.

In the modern era, I'm surprised there are word balloons still being pasted onto the art.  Digital lettering is obviously cleaner, faster and publishers can translate into different languages immediately for publication in foreign markets.  Sometimes cultural differences require changing the dialogue.  You do not want to insult an entire country because something got lost in translation.
