  1. CGC didnt do anything wrong here. I talked to Matt Nelson and he filled me in. The previous owner tried to bump it up a grade by having it pressed by persons unknown, and then the book was resubmitted as a raw to CGC. Whoever did the pressing got some bends out of it, but somewhere in the process, a second wrap became detached. So whatever improvements got made on the bends, got lost when the second wrap detached. I guess I view this as a cautionary tale. Whoever took the chance on this book lost big time: They lost $10k on the auction block, paid their vig for the new sale to Clink, and had to pay the CGC grading fee. Looks like a $20k loss to somebody. And yes, you are right: in the final analysis, I got the same 6.5 for $10k less than otherwise. I'm keeping the book, happy to have it, and still love CGC And don't forget about both the pressing and all of the shipping charges back and forth which can add up pretty fast. Looks like you ended up being the real winner out of all this on both a short term basis and definitely on a longer term basis with a key book of this magnitude.
  2. Yes, looks like that entire run of HG Cowgirl Romances did really well last night. And you just might be able to sell it for much more money considering that it is the single highest graded copy and deep pocket collectors like Greggy and Richard seems to now be hunting down these romance books. Just be sure to emphasize the romance angle and not so much the Western theme whenever you do go to sell these books.
  3. No, it was the other way around: it had just the centerfold detached the first grading, but had 2 wraps detached the second grading. I’m talking to CGC about it now. Not sure what CGC will be able to do here as it appears that somebody somewhere along the line did not handle the book with enough care when they decided to crack it out and go for the upgrade. As for the PQ going down, that's not really totally abnormal as many boardies here tend to say that PQ is the most inconsistent part about the entire CGC grading process. The positive I see here for you is that the lower PQ and the second wrap being detached probably was a factor for the price drop and resulted in the book falling into your lap, where it otherwise might have gone for a higher price to somebody else.
  4. True, plus none of those ASM 300s on ComicConnect are newsstand, if we're attempting to evaluate the book that @october posted. Although the common sense thinking is that it must be tougher to find HG copies of comic books that are distributed to the newsstand, this is not necessarily the case all the time. Especially when it comes to what is perceive to be hot books at the time, as the newsstand copies usually tends to hit the stores a month after they are distributed to the LCS's. I remember there was a hot Flash or JLA title that came out to the LCS and it was quite obvious that the newsstand copy would hit the shelves the following month. I remembered simply waiting a month before going to the local Chapter's bookstore and then cherry picking a couple of the nicer copies for my own personal collection. Of course, being a hot MA book, I've even completely forgotten what it was since the heat dies down on virtually all hot Moderns a few short months afterwards, like a water hose to fire.
  5. Ka-Ching! Well, I guess we'll get a chance to find out tonight since it looks like CC has 3 of these semi-key Spidey double cover books coming up in their auction tonight, namely Spidey 238, 252, and the apparently much in demand Spidey 300. The only problem being that all 3 of these double cover copies have been signed by the creators so I am not sure if this is the reason for their seemingly low values at this point of the auction. Although the signatures didn't seem to hurt the CGC 9.2 graded copy of Spidey 300 that managed to hit $950 in the CL auction last night. From the CL results last night, it looks like double covers and signature copies might just have to take a back seat to the price variant copies as the Canadian newsstand version copy of Spidey 238 went for the astounding price of $2,300. And yet the double cover signed Spidey 238 in the same CGC 9.6 grade is still sitting in the low $400 price range and the double cover Spidey 300 not doing much better in only the high $600 price range for now. In fact, all of the Spidey 300 appears low at this point with the one in CGC 9.2 graded condition still running at slightly lower than top of guide and even lower than where the Spidey 300 in 9.0 finished up at last night in the CL auction. Or I guess that's the thing with the CC auction format, because it tends to encourage bidding more towards the end of their auctions, especially if the 3-minute extended bidding time button gets hit. So, I guess it's just a matter of waiting to see if it's really time or not for these double covers and Spidey 300 books.
  6. Congrats on your gorgeous pickup here of a truly classic GGA cover. Like you, I also prefer the BB 52 to the much longer and traditionally acknowledged classic BB 54 cover. Probably because of the strong and bold blue, red and green color combinations on the cover of BB 52, as opposed to the more bland colors on BB 54. Either will do however, and having a companion set is always better.
  7. I don't know what kind of person would pay so much for a really nice looking copy of a book that seems to virtually never come up to market I have become much more comfortable with restored books when it comes to the books that are just never available. Having a great looking 8.0 Larson Science 2 with some ct and a Mystery Men 10 7.5 with some work done I am perfectly happy. If Berk can enjoy those kinds of books I think I can. I had a pretty nice copy of this book before that I parted company with for 20k so getting this one for $4500 felt kinda cheap. Wow, it looks like you are really hitting it out of the ball park this week with not only this restored copy of Mystery Men 10, but also this absolutely gorgeous copy of Blue Beetle 52 that just ended in CL's auction today: Love your taste and congrats on your 2 pick-ups as you've definitely got the sharp eagle eye for the great classic covers. In terms of the Mystery Men 10, what was the grade and pedigree, if any, since it sounded as though you got a very strong price on the book at $20K? Especially considering that Richard only had to pay something like $22,500 for the Jon Berk Church copy of MM10 which was and still is the highest graded copy at CGC 9.4.
  8. Sorry you didn't win the book. Winning bid however could also have been much higher ( ie 50K) but took it over you max by 1K as it was the next bid increment. It would have been nice to have seen this in an extended bidding format type auction as I believe it's quite possible that it might have gone a bit higher than this. In fact, our fellow boardie here who just missed out on it might have ended up winning it in the end as you never really know with these last second bids as you simply can't see what's happening in terms of the bids.
  9. You got me nervous when you started singling this one out . . . Extremely sorry about this since I didn't mean to do that. If you was the lucky winner of this all-important key and classic Cap book, congrats to you and I am glad that you was able to pick it up without having the price moved up on you at the end.
  10. I agree A 9.6 signed double cover sounds more unique to me than a 9.6 Canadian price variants, thanks for pointing the listings out though. Will be curious to see how it ends! Exactly my sentiments also, not only in terms of it being an extremely rare double cover book, but also considering its uber HG condition given the fact that it would have been handled and shuffled around between the 3 creators for their signature. Wow, it looks like the Canadian price variant copy took a last second jump up to $2,300 or something like almost $2K higher than the current bid for the signed double cover copy on the CC website. Looks like the copies of Spidey 300 due to end tomorrow on CC are also all trending a lot lower (so far to this point in time) to what the equivalent graded copies just sold for on the CL website. In fact, the CGC 9.0 copy of Spidey 300 sold for more than what the CGC 9.2 copy is currently going for on CC. I wondered if this has something to do with the impression (at least from my point of view) that CL is more of a BA and CA specialist with a much stronger customer base for these books, as compared to CC who is more known for the older more vintage collectible books. Of course the CC auctions aren't over until tomorrow, so we'll have a much better idea then after their extended bidding time periods (if any) are over.
  11. Aaargh! $37,500 I wish this one was a good ol' fashion bidding war. My under bid was exactly $1k less, so I'm assuming the buyers max was at least a little higher. Amazing piece - congrats to whomever took it As a fellow boardie, extremely sorry to hear that you wasn't able to snag this unbeatable possibly once in a lifetime copy of a truly classic GGA cover by L.B.Cole. Just wondering, did you put in your bid at the last second or was it from a prior max bid that you had placed before the end of this auction listing?
  12. This nice looking much in-demand copy of Blue Beetle 52 with the classic GGA cover didn't do too badly either as it took a jump from somewhere in the $2,400 range all the way up to $3,155 right at the end of the auction:
  13. I'm thinking closer to 40k Peter; Looks like you was pretty much bang on as it jumped from $25,200 all the way up to $37,500 right at the end of the auction.
  14. I'm thinking closer to 40k Well, I guess we'll all find out in about half a hour from now. The one that I am waiting for is this little beauty here which is tough to beat when it comes to in-demand GA books:
  15. Wrong. Bad information! (About GA being a 'recent' phenomenon on CL. Way wrong.) Well, that's one of the major problems with the CL auction website is the total lack of transparency in terms of providing ready access to historical results from their previously completed auctions. Notwithstanding that, I am 99.9% certain that the proportion of GA listings that they used to have relative to their BA and CA listings a couple of years ago is significantly smaller and probably a fraction of what their auction offerings are in their current auctions. Either way, it's certainly good on the part of collectors like us that their auction offerings are covering a much more broader spectrum.
  16. Take a look at the double slash marking on the top left corner of the front cover which seems to be the tell-tale signature marking for an Edgar Church book brought as a used back issue copy.
  17. Not too sure about the impact of trimming on Action 1, but those prices for the early Action's that are closing on CL is certainly nothing to write home about. Looks like quite a few of them are going for only around guide, with some even at a big discount to condition guide prices. I wonder if this has to do with the thinking that CL is really more of a BA and CA specialist, as opposed to a GA specialist which they seem to have just picked up on with the heightened prices for GA books in the past year or so.
  18. Is the double cover a Canadian price variant too? They've been expensive for all ASM books... check out #252 listings On eBay. I'll admit that I'm a little confused by what you mean by "equivalent" Canadian price variants have been higher than most copies for a while Ah after rereading I get it Canadian price variants have been a thing for a minute, but to my knowledge more so with these 2 ASM books #252 & #238. I'll leave it for a more investor savvy person to explain. I just notice it and have accepted it on these 2 books By equivalent, I meant that both of these copies have been graded as CGC 9.6 NM+ copies. Looks like the Canadian price variant copy has just popped by another $300 and is now running at more than $1,300 over the signed double cover copy on the CC auction website. I always thought there was also a huge premium paid for signed copies and double cover copies, but it would appear nothing in comparison to a foreign price variant copy.
  19. Wow, the CL Canadian newsstand version just popped by $400 with 2 hours to go and is now more than a $1,000 over the the equivalent graded signed double cover copy on the CC website is currently going for. Can somebody here who's a CA investor explain this apparent humongous price difference to me here?
  20. Yes, definitely not much movement at all in these early and rare HTF pre-hero DC books. A classic and perfect example of books that very seldom ever comes to market and hence, not enough market activity for them to ever go up much in price.
  21. You think you've got it bad? I'm the one who owns that copy with the 8 cents scribbled on the front. Well, not quite that bad since I am still willing to step up to the plate and pay you your full asking price for the book, even though you scribbled it on the front cover.
  22. I don't find the depiction of the Chinese men on the cover of Supes 45 to be racist, foolish, or mocking. The depiction of Japanese soldiers on many WW2 covers is a different story. There was certainly an effort to dehumanize the enemy during the war. You mean like this copy of Black Terror which they have in today's CL Auction: I have always liked the Black Terror covers I think he has a classic super hero costume. Looks like CL has a couple of the Black Terror books on this go round later today, while CC will have a few of the rarer HTF Exciting books with the Black Terror covers in their CC Auction tomorrow. Love the Green colors in combination with the red and yellows on this cover, even though there is a bunch of messy signatures on the front.
  23. Looks like all of the ones he had listed in his MH catalog were all going for under $10 a pop, although I am quite sure he would have listed the Punch #1 at a higher price point because that was the trend back in those days before classic covers, whereby the first issue always seem to get a premium. I remember being down at one of the SD Con's in the mid 90's when they were having a dinner to honor all of the DC GA writers and artists and I was lucky enough to be sitting right next to Joe Smekyl. He took out the minty fresh looking Hawkeye copy of Punch 10 which he had just required from a collector after selling it off a few years prior to that.
  24. Don't really fully follow the signature double cover market or the Canadian newsstand variant edition of the marketplace. Just wondering if a Canadian variant version of this Spidey 238 in CGC 9.6 condition is worth 2.5X what a signature double cover version would be in the same equivalent CGC 9.6 graded condition: http://www.comiclink.com/auctions/item.asp?back=%2FAUCTIONS%2FDEFAULT.ASP%3FFocused%3D1%26pg%3D5%26x%3D38%26y%3D11%23Item_1271562&id=1271562&itemType=0 https://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=782872 I guess the horrid placement of the signatures sometimes can really hurt the value of a book or is it due to the differing auction formats between the 2 auction houses, whereby the CC format tends to encourage bidding to be done at the end during their extended time? Will be interesting to see where both of these equivalent graded copies end up going for.
  25. What how do I ever sell my Tec 1 and 27 Bat 1 do I crack them out I don't even want to sell but my feelings are hurt by you 2 Well, if it's PGX "graded" copies, did you also pick them up for $100 a pop?
