  1. I'm kind of confused on this one. As described:

This is Kevin Eastman's original painting for the red color plate of the cover of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1984 Magazine) #1

If this is the original art actually used on the cover, shouldn't the price be like five digits long?

Well, that's the thing. It's not REALLY the original art to the cover; it was a piece that was used to give the published cover its red tones. The real, inked B&W cover, along with the rest of the interiors, did sell for 250K years ago so you're right about the what the true price would be.

This piece is very cool and historic and played an important role in the creation of the iconic cover. But it's not the real deal cover art....or else I'da been all over it!

If you wouldn't mind, could you please elaborate on the process? In what way was it used to give it its red tones?

If it was part of the process at all, wouldn't it still be (in a sense) original published art?

  2. I miss the 80's dearly!

I saw this just now, and my heart jumped:

    :luhv:

TMNT #1 Original Painted Cover Color Separation (Red plate for cover)

If anyone here gets that, can I go to your house? :P

It is a great piece. Unfortunately its been bouncing around between dealers lately, each of whom continue to increase asking price.

  3. Here's a blast from the past, original comic book store sticker, on one of the first prints, a "well loved" copy.

Can you see the original price behind it?

Makes me wish I could go back in time :insane:

    tmnt_ss_5_1_d.jpg

I would love to have that copy! I like little markings and such from the original store.

Am I the only one who misses the '80's?

  4. "I just sold a run of 1-7, missing 6, but with issues 2-7 signed by Kirkman and Moore for $620."

"Sell now while it's hot. You simply can't lose. The book could peak at $400 in CGC 9.8, but most likely it's already reached it's top price. Nine times out of ten, when books blow up in price like The Walking Dead 1-5 have, they'll come right back down to earth within a year.

Sure they have low print runs, but so does every other book these days and almost every copy has been preserved in NM or better condition."

"Sure, I'd love to have copies of the originals, but right now, I'd rather have the (IMHO) stupid money they're bringing on ebay. Give it a year and the hype will die down. I'd be willing to wager that you'll be able to buy them back for 1/2 what you sold them for."

"not if the series is still going strong

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Honestly, I really disagree with that. Even if the book continues to kick-, the "hotness" will eventually wear off and all the hype-motivated bandwagon fanboys will begin to lose interest.

I love the book, but to sustain the kind of market momentum it has now, it would have to generate a hit movie or some kind of mainstream success. Otherwise, the Wizard readers will find something new to latch onto and the values will start to decline.

There are 7,000ish copies of issue one out there. That's not enough to go around with the current press the book is garnering, but once Kirkmanmania subsides that'll be more than enough to drive the book back to the $40 range. Especially since they're mostly all NM or better."

    man oh man

Boy does that all look familiar. lol

  5. Hi, I'm fairly new to the boards and have recently been offered a TMNT color error edition signed buy Eastman graded 9.8. I actually bidded on the copy on eBay didn't win and now over a month later the seller has sent me through an offer $210. Do you think the book is worth the offer? And do you also think it will hold its value, speculatively of course. I'v got until tomorrow until offer expires. Any advice would be much appriaciated thanks

You should subscribe to GPA which tracks actual sell prices for CGC graded comics. Here's all the data they have for that one.

    Mar-25-2012 $154 Cert# 1062041008

    Mar-11-2012 $346 Cert# 1062041012

Here's the one that sold for $346

    One just sold for $212

I think $210 is a fair price, and I think it will pretty much remain flat for the foreseeable future. But that's just my opinion.

  6. I bet the next suggestion will be to get it pressed, huh?

Absolutely! If you're not an anti-pressing premadonna that's a very good candidate. There's a board member 'joeypost' who does pressing and submitting, and he's tops. A+ quality work, great prices and fast turnaround. I've never heard a single bad expperience with him.

  7. :eek::facepalm:

Thanks. This is what my gut told me, I just didn't want to believe it. Glad I could get a second opinion. Back to the drawing board on finding a legit #1, I guess. I paid $250 about 4 years ago. Lesson learned. This thread ensures that I won't be hosed again. Now I need to figure out what to do with this comic. I don't want it to fall into the "wrong" hands again, so I guess it's either keep it or destroy it.

I'll take it as a reader. Check your PMs. (thumbs u

Sorry about getting got, but it could have been much worse than $250 bucks. This one is very hard to find low grade, so if you find one scrutinize everything before you buy.

  8. From the cover I would say that's a legit 1st print. I don't know why people keep missing the most significant post in the entire thread but here it is.

    http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=5504932#Post5504932

In the second print there's a little dot above the middle building. But if you're the one who submitted it, you should know if it's a first print since you were able to open it.

  9. Is this the walking dead thread?

Funny that this spike is happening when the comic is at an all time low. I quit reading it in trade because it was boring and only watched part of the first season of the show for the same reason.

If I had any of them I would have already sold them. Anyone left holding these a year from now is going to be kicking themselves.

All of these comics are reprinted 1000x over...trades, hardcovers, weeklies...anyone who just wants to read can do so without paying out the nose. This is being fueled by speculation not casual or new fans.

Sooo, what you're saying is that you haven't read the comics or watched the show in over a year. But you know that everything WD related is currently boring. hm

The show was only mediocre. I saw a recent episode by chance and it was even worse than the first season. The production values seemed much worse than I remembered.

The first 40 something issues of the comic were a decent read. It got really old after that and I kept going into the 80s hoping it would get better but it did not. It just got more tired. Maybe after a few more trades come out I'll check it out at the library and give it another chance, but probably not.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that isn't jizzing in their jeans over the book.

I do wish I had some to sell to some of the crazy mo fos buying them on eBay though.

Of course there are others. Literally every piece of literature known to man has some people who don't care for it. There are always people who have a minority opinion.

"anyone who just wants to read can do so without paying out the nose."

Nobody pays through the nose for a comic because they want to read it.
