  1. I actually bought it off of eBay. I didn't even pay attention to the screen name. I will look it up though. :)

If it's the one I'm thinking, there was a very press worthy 7.5 that sold for a best offer of $1400.

I was soooo mad because I was watching it, and going to place an offer for more than 1400, and BAM it was gone. The seller was in driving distance to me. I can't tell you how mad I was!

Congrats if that was you. Great comic nabbed for very cheap.

  2. Can't wait to get my scan and upload a pic here. My TMNT #1 finally came in graded a 7.5 from CGC. Turned right around and sent it off to Joey to get pressed and regraded. I'm hoping it can get bumped to an 8.0 or higher.

You didn't happen to buy that from ssalesfish, did you?

  3. So my baby came in from cyberjad. She's HUGE! I'm using the same photo he posted because he took a better picture than me.

It looks very, very solid. The only color break I can find is the slightest hint of a corner ding on the upper left.

  4. boy, you got to think that there's some culpability for the guy who subbed the book to cgc, as when it came back with a 1st print label on it, selling it as such would be fraudulent.

assuming the submitter knew what print it was when it was subbed. which is an assumption i'd make, given the breadth of the collection

From a moral standpoint absolutely, but I think legally he has enough plausible deniability to escape any kind of judgment. Even if he filled out his submission form for a third print he can simply say, "I thought I was wrong since CGC is supposed to be the expert."

  5. Hey guys, new member here. Been collecting for a long time now. I was wondering if any of your expertise could help determine if these scans were of a 1st print or 2nd print? Any help is greatly appreciated!

You should call for the graders notes if your friend isn't local. I see a lot of dents that don't break color on that 7.5. If you're into the crack, press, resub game this could be an attractive copy to gamble on.

And it clearly looks like a 1st print to me from the scan. But since it's your friends book you should be able to hold the book in hand and look for that black spot above Mikey's head and get a better look at the non-color breaking creases.

    Good call!

  6. GPA records that over a year old? hm

Right. Which is why I looked at the nearest grade with more activity (8.0) and noted it has been going up in value. I use the relative increase or decrease in value and apply that proportionally to the year old 7.5 prices.

If, for example, I see the next grade up or down has increased by 10% during the same time period I apply that to the grade of the comic I'm looking at.

It's not an exact science, but I like it because it's my idea and I'm never wrong. Ever!

    :)

  7. First print.
Thanks for your quick reply! It's actually a buddies that I'm thinking of purchasing. He wants $1650 for it. Thinking of pulling the trigger.

Here's the latest sales on GPA records for a CGC 7.5

    Feb-23-2011 $1,100

    Jan-16-2011 $975 Cert# 0939366001

    Jan-08-2011 $1,050 Cert# 0170884001

Last sale was a year ago and they've gone up a bit since then. On the other hand, his doesn't have white pages. I wouldn't pay more than $1300 for it MAX. An 8.5 with white pages just sold on Ebay for $1400, though I think that was a really good deal.

Ask him if he'd sell it for fair market value for a friend. :gossip:

  8. Seems like this thread has been down for a little while, but figured I'd bump it up because I too managed to get lucky enough to nab one of those. Mine is 4/100 and CGC gave it a 9.6 . I've decided to sell it, but having trouble figuring out the best place to do so. Any guidance would be great.

Well, I would suggest doing a search on the internet for a forum where a copy has been sold before. That might be a good outlet to sell yours. :makepoint:

PS: Welcome to the forum.

  9. So now... from what I have gained from the last 14 pages is this.

I cannot buy a 1st print, high grade, slabbed TMNT # 1 with grading services from either PGX or CGC without the risk of possibly getting a second printing.

To make matters worse... if I buy a raw copy and miss any restoration when I buy it... then I'm equally screwed.

Only way to win is buy a trade paperback and enjoy the story :)

Incorrect, you missed this on page 10.

  10. I think the smart money is the guy knew he sent in a 3rd print, saw they messed up on the label and then capitalized on PGX's incompetence.

Crazy thing is, you change one company acronym in this sentence for another and we may very well be dealing with the same scenario in this situation. I know incompetence is a strong word, but from my perspective we're dealing with one of the most significant, if not THE most significantly important book of the copper age. Getting the printing wrong on a Batman 497 is one thing, its something TOTALLY different when were dealing with TMNT #1.

I don't have a horse in the race with regards to this though. I will say as others have said this thread has been a gem of information and fun to follow in comparison to the 20 or Gerry Ross threads in general.

Oh, I totally agree. personally I went from having very little knowledge about this comic to being able to identify all the printings from each other. Stronguy even discovered a way to tell first print from second print from the cover alone, something that to my knowledge had never been discovered for. I got way more than I was hoping for when I made this thread

  11. I wonder how their process works for identifying and labeling comics. I know the comics get checked by a resto expert and then it moves on to three graders. I don't know who is responsible for identifying it, labeling it and imputing the data into the census.

But... it looks like 9.8 copies just became more rare.

  12. He has been buying comics from me for 3-4 years, than marks them up in his fixed priced inventory. He has set up at Wondercon, I chatted with him there. I would not hesitate to make a purchase from him.

Cool. His Ebay listing is ending tomorrow. I just tried to look up "Comic Mylars" in San Jose, CA so I can make him an offer, and apparently there's no business listing for that name.

  13. The majority of his expensive books are graded and from what I can tell he sounds like a legit seller.

Sean, you thinking about buying books or supplies?

I have my eye on his 9.6 TMNT 1 but it's a bit pricey. The photos are too small for me to tell if it's a mislabeled 2nd print or a legit 1st print.

There's another boardie who has TWO! 9.6's who still seems to be out of town.

:gossip: There's a pretty nice 9.6 in the sales forum now.

I would be all over that if not for the unverified signature. For someone who doesn't mind that it's a gorgeous comic and the signature is obviously real.
