BEST OF 2019: BUDGET EDITION - Results Posted!

@bernoulli, you should split this into three posts so we can vote one each piece. Just edit your original and delete two images and then post those two in different replies. -
Commissioning the original artist to recreate a cover.

Playing the Devil's advocate, what if the artist did four of the same thing - with some differences? Click to read more. Or a lithograph or just a sketch that was reminiscent? Certainly these are not identical, but is anything? In any case, someone was willing to commission an artist to recreate a piece (or the artist saw a chance to make a buck or thought each improved in some way, who knows?). -
Here it is in all its glory. Click to see the auction entry. I didn't recognize any of the characters. Yuck!

Speaking of Themes, I collected and published a list of themes used by various folks. It's a good read, I think, though it needs an update. -

For what it's worth, on my Sea Devils 6, above, the water is noticeably colder than on the original cover. Here's the original for comparison if you don't believe me. -

As mentioned above, Greg Woronchak. You can reach him here: https://gwor23.wixsite.com/comic. He's done a lot of these. -

Yep. I think so. -
Good suggestion.

I assume everyone is familiar with @Michael (OML)'s CAF? It's full of cover "recreations" set one minute after the cover scene. Look in the ones that start "1 Minute Later - xxx" where xxx is the character/theme of the pieces in the gallery. It's a lot of fun. -

I've had three recreations done. Russ Heath did two (click for bigger picture) which (as I understand it) he lightboxed and painted. Thom Zahler (re)did this for me. I believe that it too is a lightbox. Thom works digitally for his comic so there is (almost) no original art for Love and Capes. I didn't really care how they did it; I just wanted the image by the original creator. -

You are welcome. It's a pretty common question with no definite answer so I decide to at least provide a list of hints. Hope it helps. -
At Comicpalooza, I asked him to do a drawing featuring Thea (it's up at the top of the thread). I could tell that he and Yams were concerned about the drawing. What DWJ had drawn wasn't a classic head shot, but a much more interesting piece featuring Thea on her vehicle. I could not have been happier with it, but you could tell that if I didn't like it, DWJ was ready to do something else. Good folks. Happy customer.

Free hand, light box, printed blue-line and new ink are all common. To avoid disappointment, talk! -
Glad you did and likewise!

BEST OF 2019: BUDGET EDITION - Discussion Thread
alxjhnsn replied to BCarter27's topic in Original Comic Art
I decided to include what I paid so that people can see that really attractive pieces are available for not a lot of money (though I admit that "not a lot" is VERY relative). Also, I hope that it encourages people on a budget to keep at it. There's good material at almost every price point. -
I read before buy. I do read a lot of monthly books. As for Felix, I end up seldom buying from him. My reflexes aren't fast enough.

Have you read Extremity by DWJ? If not, get it. I had him do this sketch for me at Comicpalooza 2018 featuring Thea, the protagonist. I’m thrilled with it. Click for a bigger picture and a bit more description.

The only double is the one that Kathy and I each got at the IDW Simonson dinner in 2017. The Kirby Kamandi looks like a duplicate, but it's really two different volumes. The Jim Lee was really an excuse to donate money to the CBLDF. They were selling a signed Jim Lee Artifact edition for a reasonable sum as a fundraiser so I bought it. I like Jim's work, but I probably wouldn't have bought the book otherwise. There is only one Jim Lee book that I specifically sought out beyond my normal pull list - ICONS which featured an LSH story. John Byrne's work on X-Men I enjoyed - especially Days of Future Past from 141/142, but I'm not a huge fan of his art overall. I enjoy it and own a lot of comics with it, but I don't seek him out. I'll buy the Cockrum book, but I'd really prefer a Legion one.

Re: Pictures There are apps for your smartphone that would allow you to take good pictures, e.g., CamScanner and Microsoft Lens. Re: Pricing Comic Art What follows is my standard answer. If you'd like it as an email, PM me with your email address and I'll send it along. It's in a spoiler tag because it is long and lots of people have seen it many times. -
