My views on this one, which I've mentioned numerous times in the past (whenever these same type threads re-appear), is that some artists are better than others at re-creating past glories.  A lot of these fail badly when the artist tries to hand-letter the art and the end-results are very often clumsily performed, lettering being a real skill in itself.  A re-created cover by the original artist (or inker) is painful for me to look at if the lettering is badly done.

Good point. If the artist is uncomfortable with the lettering part, skip it. You can have it done by a pro later if you wish.

  2. Being in the NYC area back in the day was a big advantage.

I guess I don't feel too left out because there is so much new stuff that I enjoy.

That said, I'd love to acquire some of these older pages, but I don't see it happening for the majority of them.

    • Swan/Klein Superman or LSH page
    • Shuster Superman
    • Kirby Thor or New Gods page
    • Marshall Rogers Detective (Batman) page from his wonderful run with Steve Englehart and Terry Austin
    • Sprang Batman
    • Everett Sub-Mariner page
    • Mayer Scribbly page (if there are any)
    • Steve Ditko Creeper

    On the possible horizon are:

    • Swanderson Superman page
    • Aparo B&B page (art and letters by Jim)

In all honesty, it depends on a lot of variables. I've seen about half a dozen, or more, Silver Surfer 4 cover re-creations by John Buscema floating round the internets. It's pretty obvious he light boxes most of it, and only varies the cosmic starfield background a bit. How valuable is a lightboxed re-creation, even by the original artist? It all depends on supply and demand.

FWIW, there are four sales of a SS #4 recreation by John Buscema in Heritage's archive.

  4. Curt Swan, a favorite of mine, did a number of cover recreations that have been resold on Heritage. They all went for four figures and some are much higher than Curt would have charged at the time.

Curt Swan Adventure Comics #333 Legion of Super-Heroes Penciled Cover Re-Creation Original Art (1995)
Adventure 333 - $3883.75 (I was the underbidder, Gary Land won it and you can see it in his CAF)

Curt Swan Adventure Comics #360 Cover Recreation Legion of Super-Heroes Original Art (1994)
    Adventure 360 - $2760 in 2018, $2390 in 2012

Curt Swan - Adventure #312 Cover Recreation (DC, 1994). Surely one of the best known and most beloved artists of the Sil...

    Adventure 312 - $1495 in 2002

There are other recreations "out there" by Richard () Sprang that have sold for a lot of money over the years.

    Alex,

Before I go on, I think you got a bargain on your piece. You have almost 30 characters, plus background/foreground objects, plus a color version, all pulled together into a unified image that is cleverly done by a good artist. I think that is easily worth $3,700.

Bottom line, Alex, you did well and your money was well spent, IMO

But no, I don't see a justification for spending $15,000 for a commission by Lee (even though his work is excellent).

I should have pointed out that I got a friends and family discount. Asking was $5K. My main point is that commissions often lose a significant portion of their purchase price as soon as they are complete.

As to “justification for ... Jim Lee,” you provided it when you wrote “when a person really wants something, there is no such thing as overpaying.” That’s reality. It’s seldom about the image itself. It’s the total experience.

  6. I don't own the art, but I think these two are interesting. Click to get a bigger image.
