  1. Speaking of HtD becoming popular, after his appearance at the end of the first GotG movie, Metropolis contacted me about buying my Brunner HtD piece. I guess they were speculating that HtD art would go up due to the movie. Hard to believe that would be true for my commission since Frank is around to draw more.

It struck me as odd. Anyone see a hike in HtD pieces?

  2. Okay, there are two new in progress sketchbooks up on the CAF (and I've reorganized my galleries).

The new index page on my CAF page:

    Kathy's sketchbook: http://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=184351

    Rebecca's sketchbook: http://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=184352

Both are ordered to match the sketchbook.

I strongly, strongly recommend that you check out the Electra piece that Joe Rubinstein did. It was exactly what she wanted in the book.

Rebecca's first piece (Joffrey on the Iron Throne) has an interesting story be sure to read the Description.

  3. Kathy and I made our pilgrimage to San Diego last week. We've been to lots of cons (Boston, Heroes, MegaCon, Dallas, Alamo City, Comicpalooza, ECCC, Rose City, etc.), but never SDCC. It conflicts with our stay on the Guadalupe River in Central Texas and it's a hassle to get tickets and rooms. That changed thanks to a (rather large) Kickstarter pledge to the CBLDF and a room from my friend Thom Zahler. With that, we were in business.

Initially, we went just to explore the scene and pick up a few autographs in my Stan Sakai tribute book (17!). I thought I'd visit the art dealers and AA. I didn't expect to spend much; we had a wedding this year!

However, those plans grew more ambitious when IDW offered dinner with Walt and Louise Simonson. The dinner included a number of perks besides their company. One of those was an inked “headshot” by Walt. Wow, did that understate what he delivered. Read the Descriptions to learn about our adventure. Also, I think Kathy got the best piece at the dinner.

However, our art buying did not end there. We went to the CBLDF Art Auction where there were many wonderful pieces. You can read a bit about it here and see the auction results: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1400584193504897/permalink/2001007876795856/#

We managed to win a terrific piece by the Eisner winning Jill Thompson (3 at this year’s Eisner Awards Show; 2 for her WW graphic novel). You can read about her win and see some interesting pictures on this link:

There's a little more art to come. Kathy started a sketchbook. To get a feel for how big a deal that is, read this: https://thebuzzmagazines.com/articles/2013/10/still-crazy-comics.

  4. I've fixed some of the links (and dropped some, I'll try to add them later). I've also addressed the covers.

However, the text editing options on the new board are a pain and a paste from MS Word doesn't work at all.  It won't accept MS Word files as an attachment (reasonable).

I'm not sure what I'm going to do. :(

Can't remember the last time I saw a full color Pete Docter piece. He's my kids generation's Walt Disney....

Created for a charity fundraiser for Team Cul De Sac benefitting the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

Pete knew and respected Richard Thompson's work and donated this piece to help out.

That is a nice win! Chris and Team Cul de Sac often have gems like this at the Drink and Draw. I got my Mutts piece there a couple of years ago.

  6. Years ago, I bought a piece of art consigned to my LCS from an estate. It was framed in a very expensive frame, but I didn't like - my framing is very simple (black frame, double mat (white with a small colored rim within the white).

Recently, I decided to unframe the piece since I'd never hang it.

I took the opportunity to scan it and replace the old photograph that I had been using - it's much better now.

  7. Tom Mandrake is one of the best at moody pieces and a Mandrake Batman is a wonderful thing. Congratulations.

One my commission list is a Tom Mandrake piece featuring Batman, The Spectre, and the Martian Manhunter. He worked on all three and all three are gloriously moody.

He reminds me of Gene Colan in a lot of ways and may be the only one "out there" with a similar approach.

  8.

    Happy Birthday to me!

I saw this at Comicpalooza while picking up art for a friend and really liked it as an example of one of my favorite series, but I decided to pass on it. I’ve bought too much of late and SDCC is coming.

However, Kathy, my wonder wife, picked it up for my birthday. Very pleased to have an example from that series.

In the many threads on paper conservation, the names that recur the most were:

I would add that most major museums know of paper conservators. You might want to contact someone at a local museum and see if there is a conservator close to you.
