Available older keys "drying up" a report from NYCC

Common selling tactic to allow yourself to be negotiated down to the actual going rate. -
You should tell that story here, in general or flea market finds or something (not this sales thread, and my apologies for the non-sales post). I bet a lot of people here would love to hear about a recent AF15 attic find.

I dunno. I belong to a couple of FB comics groups where the lack of knowledge is staggering (even to me who knows so little). One thing they all seem to have in common though, is the absolute firm belief that the first thing you do to any book is have it pressed, even if they have no understanding of pressable v non-pressable defects. Also, I posit a third category of condition-related work: there is conservation, restoration, to which we should ad presstoration. I'll uh, just let myself out now.

Turtlemania #1 Question
mackenzie999 replied to mackenzie999's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Not quite sure what you're looking for either, but if you need an explanation CGC had not answered my question until after I had reposted it here (which was mentioned before I even got to the question). If something confuses you, try reading more carefully. -
I guess where we differ is whether or not the sigs/sketches were part of the manufacturing process of not. Since the people who created the book intended for those to be part of the book, and no copies exist without them, I contend that they absolutely are a part of their manufacture. The fact that they are generated by hand (if that is the point of contention) and not by machine should be irrelevant. The ink is not additional, it was always meant to be there.

Posted this in Ask CGC a few days ago, nothing but crickets so I figured I'd ask here. There is in existence a gold variant of Turtlemania #1. Apparently there are only ten copies of this variant in existence, and each was released with signatures and sketches from the creators. This is how they came, and there are no gold copies that do not feature this. As such, should these sketches/sigs not be considered part of the production process, as that is how they were released? I believe all CGC copies are green labeled due to unwitnessed writing/drawing, but since they are an inherent part of the production of these issues, should they not receive blue labels? These are extremely valuable books, and I'm very curious why CGC considers them qualified.

Golden Record Reprint. A few early Marvel keys were issued in book-and-record sets. The easiest way to distinguish them is there is no cover price. My comment about that was meant as a joke...mostly. Other GRR's: Fantastic Four #1, Spidey #1, Journey into Mystery #83. These came out around 1966 I think, and are about the best reprints you can get as they are close to the age of the originals. -
PGX 9.6 Avengers #4 - What Would CGC Do?
mackenzie999 replied to jason danziger's topic in Comics General
If this is an LCS kinda thing, see if you can work out some sort of refund deal if CGC finds undisclosed restoration or something like that? Kind of a PITA that many dealers would probably never agree to, but worth a shot. Ultimately it's a $4K crapshoot with a PGX bow on it, so it really boils down to is how much does $4K mean to you? If it's no big deal give it a shot, just be prepared to join the very long line of "Burnt by PGX" sob stories. Also, since this is PGX we are talking about, there is a very real possibility that this is a GRR with a price sticker added. -
So Which SA Mega Key Will Surge This Year?
mackenzie999 replied to Jaydogrules's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
I’ve got a ToS39 4.0 that I’ve been considering trying to convert into an FF1 via trade. I would likely hang on to either book for at least another decade. Any thoughts on that being a good/bad idea? -
Previews vs. First Appearance - Introducing RULE 31.
mackenzie999 replied to valiantman's topic in Comics General
Rule #1: Previews are worth as much as the market dictates -
I'll be selling mine. I don't expect the market for comics to last (not trying to stir up that debate again, just stating which side of it I'm on) and my son stands to inherit an absurd fortune from an uber wealthy relative (who is already in steep decline) so he probably couldn't be bothered dealing with them.

Now if only they'd release this in a convention-friendly, searchable digital format for phones and tablets... -
I had a ritual, back when I was reading comics as a kid. I would hop on the subway and go to Million Year Picnic in Harvard Square (a couple miles from Boston) to buy the latest new X-Men (this was peak Cockrum-Byrne era). I would buy a soda and some snacks, which was a huge treat for me since my parents didn't really keep stuff like that in the house. I'd take my books and sit under my favorite shady tree in Harvard Yard and savor every panel. I miss that feeling but cannot recreate it.

This might grade out higher, my 4.0 looks about the same but mine has two significant tears on the fc. Great pickup! -
