For anyone following this other thread re:counterfeit TMNT, the comic is up for sale again but as a “rare” counterfeit for $5k. The seller may be connected to or even be the same person as the original scammer. (Current seller is mabear80 and a person who reached out to the CGC board member/TMNT expert had a name that could be shortened to “mabear”.)

Could they be early "newsstands" that they got for free? Where a retailer would return a cut cover or page to the distributor for a refund to prove the comic was "destroyed" and not sold and then just did whatever they wanted with the rest of the book (usually give them away or trash them). So they'd just be readers for whoever got them... (Used to work for a place that did it with magazines. We'd give the coverless magazines to anyone who wanted them but returned the covers to the distributor for a refund.)

I'm a little confused. Was the image you replied with a copy of the Killing Joke? Or were you saying the whole sale was a killing joke? Is there an image of what he was offering for sale?

Starts out as an innocent too-good-to-be-true find but then a TMNT-expert board member finds out the seller attempted to scam buyers with faked Twitter messages from Eastman himself. Listing has already been canceled (possibly after the board member caught it). Up to you if you want to block but I wouldn't want to deal with someone that might be trying to scam others. eBay user in question: superman131313

Article is updated with a statement from DC claiming they own the cooyrights (allegedly, anyway).

But that ebay copy doesn't have a barcode either and the seller is claiming it's a rare variant:
