  1. My first comics were Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes. My first mainstream comic was Silver Surfer 50 though. The bookstore at the mall near my house started getting actual comic books in, and the cover caught my eye. Before that, the only exposure I had to mainstream comic characters were cartoons. I was lucky enough to snag a nice page a few years ago. http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=382206 I've also got a cover recreation of it too! http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=16714
  2. Cover to X-Men Alpha by Joe Mad! and Tim Townsend.
  3. Oh man. You're going there. Ive been biting my tongue on a lot MM Simply the Best "memories" from back in the day...
  4. I had a shot at this one right before the current owner got it. (And has owned it for 12 years since) But, as much as I wanted (and still do) a New X-men full page splash from the Morrison run... I just couldnt do it.
  5. This is an affordable A3 scanner. I have an older model. Been using it for years. The only caveat is the thing is HUGE. http://www.trustedreviews.com/reviews/brother-mfc-j6530dw
  6. Prices seem fair to high for the good stuff. The lower end stuff though did go cheaply. 80 bucks for a half page Bagley splash? Regardless if it's the defunct Ultimate line, someone scored some nice published art for twenty bucks more than he charges to draw Spidey's head. And there's lots of other examples like this.... That said. The Lim prices. 800 bucks for the explosion page. I dont know whether to smile, laugh, or cry.
  7. Heres some scans courtesy of the way back machine. I also remember thinking real hard about going for the cover to 616 which was priced at either 8k or 10k. (Pretty sure it was 8) But it meant liquidating about 30% of my collection at the time so I never had the heart to pull the trigger.
  8. I remember the damn auction that established those prices. It was the first piece of art Albert made available to the public via an eBay auction starting at a dollar. It was just Batman's hands. No faces. It landed at the 500ish range and my heart sank. I knew right away any decent panel page with Bats in costume would have a bottom floor price of 1k minimum. And I was right. Before that auction you could get decent Jim pages under 1k. After that? Sketches of bats were going for 300-400. If SGM's agent had tried a similar approach of letting the market dictate what these are worth, we'd see these selling at 50-70% less than the asking price. But again brilliant move by the dealer. He used hype, speculation, and an "event" that targeted a small specific client pool to achieve prices for an indie artist that it would otherwise take an artist a prolific career and life time too attain/earn. (By the time Jim Lee was getting "Hush" prices for his artwork. He had already sold 5 million + X-Men comics, co-founded Image, started his own universe which spawned toys and cartoons, and you know, solidified himself as a name in not just comics but pop culture as a whole.) This wont be the last time something like this is done. It worked once it'll work again. But the market will fall the way it always does when a dealer manipulates it.... When the eventual sell off happens.
  9. Odds are most of the people invited weren't a group of devoted SM collectors, and more likely a group of collectors who are known to pay high asking prices.
  10. I am blissfully ignorant of most artists/artwork/stories that have come out in the last five years, so this is a genuine query on my part. Can someone explain to me what body of work this artist has done prior to this Batman comic to warrant these kind of numbers? Also, for an elseworld story, why this is being SO highly regarded? The money being quoted in these threads for these WK pages is absurd. So Im really trying to understand the mentality... Or is it just that deadly combination of hype and pretty pictures warranting these prices? As for how these pages were sold... I think that was brilliant on the reps part. But thats easy for me to say when Im no longer buying current artwork.
  11. Thank you! Congrats on the cover to 75. And there it is! It's been in a black hole since 93. Wow. Very cool! Thanks for chiming in and sharing!!
  12. Comparable to what the Gauntlet is doing now? Nothing. I can't think of any 90s property to ever do these type of numbers in such a rapid jump... Maybe the McSpidey market at one point and / or the Death of Superman market in the very early 2000s when no one wanted the stuff... That said, I think the Kubert 90s X-Men has shown a lot of strength over the past few years and has a ton of room for growth.
  13. Yeah... But... You can't really compare the meteoric rise of what happened with IG art market to the kubert xmen market of the early 90s. The current IG market's insane spike has to do with the movie universe cementing it in annals of pop culture history. I think five figures might be a bit generous, 10ish-k at most on a really good auction day for the seller... But who knows.
  14. Not arguing at all with what you said. Many will agree with you. I'm just pointing out there will be a sweet spot of collectors who want it. And who are also now just the right age to throw real money at it. Personally, as someone who collects these pages, Id love the price to stay low. So I hope your right. It wasnt long ago the cover to 75 sold for only 10k.
  15. As someone who was 10 years old when that story line came out. To me, it's just as "historic" as Tony Stark becoming an alcoholic, Jason Todd dying or Supes getting killed... Now, that said. I'm WELL AWARE Wolvie getting his metal pulled didnt have nearly the same cultural impact that any the two I'm comparing it too did. BUT... Nostalgically... It's etched in my mind as one of those GREAT moments. And I know I cant be the only one.
  16. I own the two pages that follow that splash from XMEN 25. (As well as the sweet Magneto page in the beginning of the issue.) I've been chasing quality pages from this book for years. I was told many moons ago that the splash from issue 25 and the matching color guide went missing / were stolen from the Marvel offices back in the 90s. Now that may be complete BS, since that information didnt come from Mr. Kubert. (MAYBE Spencer told me. I could be wrong.) But, it is a fact that's always in the back of my head, and at least for me, does make the splash from Wol 75 more desirable, as it's the only premium page of that moment from that story line, save the covers.
  17. I remember this happening with the Kirby market waaaayyyy back in the day when I first started collecting. (2001 or 2002?) My memory of what happened was, after the market was flooded, a big ol dip occurred, and then over time the market corrected itself to pre-liquidation prices as things got sold back up. Now granted. WD artwork does not have the same prestige nor time tested strength the Kirby market did at the time. But as long as it's just one collector pushing the big red button, the market will probably follow a similar pattern.
  18. 2ish years ago I offered the owner of it at the time $2500..... He told me he had "way more than 2500 into the piece", and he passed. Fair enough. That was the last I heard of it until this auction. I think youre valuation of 1500-2000 is a little low. Thats still a ton of Lee art for your dollar. As I said a few years ago, I still think 2500 is right on the money for a valuation. And considering that top panel is splashy action shot of Supes. It's a great value... It's just too bad this series was not received well enough for it to also have the nostalgia factor driving up it's price.

(Int. please add 35.00) Or, both pages for 500.00 Flat! Please PM ME if interested! Thanks everyone! Mike
  21. I do too. But that's cause it's by Timm. Do I think it's worth silly money based on it being an early Harley cover. No. Not "silly money". But it's still worth 5 figures IMO and, Timm aside, Harley certainly contributes to that opinion.
  22. I think the issue is he's taking scans that he hasnt even bought yet, trying to sell them at a markup on his own website, and then once he's made the sale, and only then, buying them from Lobrac. I did this when I was like 17 years old and first started in the hobby. Spencer called me and lovingly tore me a new one and explained why that wasn't just bad form but illegal. Also, Im pretty sure Visar is on these boards.
  23. Wow... Just wow... What a great auction! Congrats to all parties!
  24. I get contacted a lot about NFS pieces all the time. Most of the time my answer is a variation of it's not for sale barring an offer that is at least 5x FMV and even then I might not sell. The price isnt about the art. Its paying me to let go of it. And about 90 percent of the time I hear nothing back. 9% of the time, said collector will ignore what I said and offer FMV which leads to either healthy debate or them getting mad and insulting. (I remember one collector who would hound me to no end, left off our last conversation with "Fine. You can just keep it then since you love it so damn much.") And 1% of the time I do get an offer I'll accept.
