  1. Got this today. Most exciting $1 I've ever spent on a book and now I know what the GA guys say about buying the book and not the grade. Been on the lookout for it for years but never seen it.
  2. Great book! After I complete my Legion run, I'm considering pushing my Adventure run back as far as I can. Some really interesting books in this thread.
  3. This is one of my favorite threads and now that I'm complete with my Avengers SA run, I'm sad because I have nothing to post . . Maybe I'll have to start looking for some upgrades soon, so I can post something.
  4. Chip -- do what you gotta do and do it without regret. In the end, they are just books and they can be replaced. Remember, part of the thrill is the hunt!
  5. For me it's about the risk I'm willing to take. I would not buy high grade, expensive books on ebay except from sellers I recognize and trust. Generally for me that means books that are more than a couple hundred dollars. I build the risk of misgrading into my bids, so I'm covered. Sometimes I miss but more often I end up with a good deal. Sometimes it is just a great deal. Sellers who can't provide high quality scans on high priced books are generally penalized for that in the final result.
  6. Haven't been at it long, so I'm far behind you. I do have the 48, 49, 50, and 55 (my favorite), and have 72 plus 74-77 en route from a Boardie. A few other scatttered nice issues like 6, 10, 14, 24, 25, 27, and so on... so working on it. A sweet presenting FF 13 with great PQ and at the right price is going to be a real challenge for me, I know. I'm scattered from 13-30 and solid after 30 up to 104. Been working on the early run for a few years and now starting to get into the really expensive ones. Probably another 5-7 years before I'm solid from 1-100. May go after a few between 1 and 5 this year at SDCC. Working on my 'war chest' now.
  7. Primarily the writing on the front cover, which is not a date stamp nor retailer's mark. It's probably a 6.5-7.5 otherwise, but that writing knocks it down from there. I just had a book get 8.0 with small writing on it. scan?

  9. You answered your own question...buy the book, not the label. (thumbs u This book by the way, is very presentable, and that i think is what matters the most to me. As you mentioned you can take it out and enjoy this puppy any time you want without worrying about being ultra careful. Also, It looks as though you got a great deal at just $400.00...congrats!!!! Here's my favorite recent example from my collection -- recently sold. It's a technical 4.0 but just look at the book. Looks like something I bought off the stands within the last few years. Books like this are my favorites to buy. I remember having a long conversation with a fellow collector who had recently started collecting about what was great about this book when I bought it during a Gold and Silver event at my LCS.
  10. Holy sheeeit! BAM! unbelievable book. fantastic get.
  11. Yep. I had a problem with my scanner software (books looking much better -- esp. whites) and based on the recommendations here, I tried out vuescan and did a comparison of multiple books using my scanner's software and using vuescan. vuescan consistently produced a truer representation of the book. So I bought that. When you think about it, it makes sense. Most people are scanning photos or docs where cleanup. color-fixing, etc are highly valued rather than a perfect reproduction. I'm sure I could have tweaked a ton of settings in either my scanner software or photoshop express and maybe gotten a similar result, but I'm not very good at such things.
  12. looks great! How well does it reflect the book? I found that the software with my scanner did too much clean up and brightening of my scans. beautiful book, btw.
  13. Still working on my legion run. Here's a bunch I picked up in a recent Heritage auction. A few upgrades, but mostly filling holes in my run.
