Does this mean Sandman art will go further out in the stratosphere? Or is this the Gaiman tax on this specific auction?

I was really surprised what the Daniel pieces wound up at, because I thought they would go a bit higher.  The promotional Daniel piece was a steal at 10k - really nice.  The Destruction page and Vess pages were really healthy as well.

Honestly, I don't think much of the OA had that much of a Gaiman tax, but as mentioned, the slabs and other pieces were a different story.  Regardless, it was nice to see things come out of the woodwork.

We'll see, but I think there's still plenty of room for growth, although I am sure there are plenty out there that would like to see the opposite... (myself included).  🙃🙃🙃😁😁😁

What kind of update would you like?

I will say Dave McKean brought the heat IMO - a couple of Sandman related covers; an Arkham Asylum cover; Hellblazer stuff; etc. Just absolutely all incredible stuff. I'll try to get some pictures.

Most other artists just took commissions such as Gary Frank and Lee Bermejo, who didn't bring any published work.

The Bill Sienkiewicz stall was hilarious - dude dressed up like a slimy salesman trying to sell unpublished work for $10k+ (absolutely nothing had prices on either), when 2 tables down a dealer had published stuff for €700-1,200.

Pictures would be great if you have any.  Of course I'm a sucker for anything McKean related.  😁

  3. 13x19 Itoya with mylar sleeves for the art is how the bulk of my pages are stored.

Anything oversized (DPS, early Sandman pages, anything else larger than 11x17, etc) goes into a larger portfolio.  Pages are in mylar as well.

Just having the extra breathing space is nice, even if the art slides around just a little.

He was so confident, that he gleefully looked forward to rubbing other people's $1M+ guesses in their faces when this was over. Even better, he offered to eat his hat on Bill Cox's Comic Art Live show if the cover went for over $1M. Which of course it did within 24 hours. So we all have that to look forward to, at least.

So, I guess the real question at this time is what condiment works well with a hat:

    Ketchup?

    Grey Poupon?

    A1?

  5. For the most part, anything I have framed these days is simple black and white frame showing the full board.  I do that for black and white pages and color too.  Just like the minimal approach and letting the art speak for itself.

When I first started collecting, I did color mattes for a couple of paintings and one DPS has a matte covering the border of the page.  Not that they look bad or anything, just older me prefers the cleaner approach.  Obviously do what works best for you!

Below is what I have framed currently.  Sorry for the lack of photography skills.  😜

  6. Am I content with my collection?  For the most part, yes.  I've become more focused on my wants, and have a long term goal / dream for specific pages that my never happen, but I do have my Sandman grail, so there's always hope.

Sure, there's a ton of things I would like to have, but the reality of being able to obtain them has been going by the wayside price wise for a long time.  Sure, there is still affordable pieces out there that do interest me, but I just haven't gone in on them yet.  I have been enjoying the occasional commission when I have been able to get them as well.

    I'd probably be a 8.5 / 10 if we were grading.

  7. I have most of my Sandman OA signed by Neil as well as the artists who did the work.

Why?  Well, to me, Neil's words are just as important as the art, IMHO.  Honestly, if I had anything that Alan Moore wrote, I'd feel the same way.

Does it add anything to the value?  Probably not, but I'd argue getting Neil to sign something is about the same degree of difficulty to get most of the other artists signatures these days.

And, Neil signed my pages in the margins with a ballpoint pen.  I'd suggest the same for anyone signing OA.

Mike Dringenberg Sandman #8 page hammered at $90K.  It's sort of what I expected as it's  Not too far off from the selling price of the first appearance of Morpheus. But part of me feels it should have gone higher, above the 100K mark.  Me thinks, these pages are just scratching the surface.

    Yeah, hard to say.

Yes, it was cool to see the page from 8, but it wasn't really an A or A+ example in my opinion.  Don't get me wrong... it's great to see them surface, but I don't think it really would have gone that much higher.

Honestly, I think the only real A+ Sandman page to hit the auctions was the house ad.  Definitely felt that piece was under what it should have gone for, but kudos to the buyer for getting it at that price.

Look forward to seeing what else shows up down the road.  I do agree that prices are scratching the surface, but we haven't had a lot of A+ pages from the book to really judge that on.

Looks like we’ve settled on 963 OA lots for this auction.  With so much goodness, I’ve whittled down my ‘must have’ list to 27 pieces.

I'm waiting for the 38 Garfield straps to be added so it pushes the total over 1000 for this auction.

  10. Yeah, no idea what the page from 8 will go for.  It's nice, but not something I would personally go to the mat for.  Definitely cool to see it though.

The Lucifer page... not sure I that one either, because I keep kicking myself for not going after it when it was originally listed on Albert's site for 8k (or bidding for it when it was originally auctioned).

    Hi, all.

many thanks to everyone who contacted me about this piece.  It was nice to meet so many Sandman/Death fans.  What an amazing collecting community!  👍🏻

this piece is now on hold

    Wow.  Late to the party.

Just curious, what was your asking price on the Death page?  Wonderful piece.

Definitely curious what you're getting as well.  Good luck with the sale.

  12. Well, the ones with the colored mats were done years ago by different framers, so that's on me more than anything else.  Honestly, I'd probably prefer having them be redone in the same size / black and white like the other McKeans are.  Just haven't done it... yet.  (shrug)

Same thing with the Spawn / WildCATS DPS - different framer at the time it was done.

Now to lose some sleep due to this and OCD kicking in.
