  1. Thanks Peter (and others). I assume there's a small flaw of some kind on the back. I have a file copy #77 that looks similar at the front but has a 1.5 cm edge tear on the back and graded out at 6.5. Works for me! This is one of my favourite covers in the run. I'd like to have the Aussie reprint of it as well, but since that's on WDC&S #1, it would cost me twenty times as much - if I could find one!
  2. Just picked up this very nice 7.5 W file copy on the Heritage weekly. Beak abuse.
  3. +1 Those are amazing Have you seen the Delacourt bound volumes in the Heritage signature auction? They are extraordinary items. They don't get 'Deller' than those ones!
  4. Wow - those Dell bound volumes are things of beauty!! The Four Color series is such a diverse and wondeful thing.
  5. Here's some more of the Another Rainbow Barks trading cards. I just picked up the whole 1-25 set from eBay. I'm still looking for a few of the 'Heroes and Villians' WDC&S cards and Scrooge 1, 31-56 if anyone has some spares they don't want.
  6. Wow tb - that may be my favourite yet! I have to get one to put beside these: and this: Happy July 4 to American boardies everywhere! Andrew
  7. I dunno - with issues like that, I find aesthetics and history starting to blur for me. The images themselves tell you something about the time, technology and contemporary values (including mid 1930s pop culture aesthetics). I find it hard to separate the two.
  8. EC goodness. Two of the three Civil War issues. (The other is Frontline Combat #9)
  9. Colour me jealous - I'd love to find one of those.
  10. The NYT is a wonderful institution. I love the way they give everyone their title; 'Mr Disney'. (I read a review last week of a concert by Bruce Springsteen - 'Mr Springsteen took the stage...'). And D. Duck The Australian ad in Mr Duffman_Comics' MMM really took me back. My dad ran a grocery shop when I was growing up and I can remember selling PMU sauce - but never knew it abbreviated 'Pick Me Up'. I learn something every day on these boards. One day it may even be something useful.
  11. Another one I didn't know about - thanks! (thumbs u
  12. Incredible!! I don't usually quote the images, but I'll make an exception for this book. Great eye appeal and impecable provenence. Congrats Mark.
  13. Agreed - Our Gang is a really fun read. And the Barks shorts from #8 on are very good. I'm looking for a nice #17 myself...
  14. Quiet you fool - they've almost forgotten this is a penal colony...
  15. I am unreasonably pleased with this new addition to my collection. I had it shipped to work and when I showed my coworkers there was a collective 'that's so cool'! I thought that was the appropriate response.
  16. One more added thanks to Ed. I was sorry to have missed this copy a few months ago when I thought another boardie had snagged it. I hope the deal didn't fall through for hardship reasons, but I'm very pleased it came back on the market so I could get it. It's my first one in the 30s and the tortoise edges forward one more step... You can see this one with three other Walt Kelly takes on the same idea in the group shots thread.
  17. Here's an unusual group shot. (I hope) A couple of years ago I noticed how Walt kelly had recycled one of his cover gag ideas several times over. Walt clearly liked this gag, and so do I - it just took a while to find the right combination of price and eye to pull this shot together.
  18. That would make sense since the cover is kind of a parody of books like Aces High.
  19. Nice one Transplant - I really like DD26. I thought I'd post a couple more interior pages from WWII vintage WDC&S. These come from #26: This is very much a 'Disney goes to war' kind of thing. It's from the inside cover. My other totally well socially adjusted hobby is building models, and I'm planning to use the scan to produce some markings for a future project. Here's some more newspaper strips. 'Blame it on the Japs' - it's amazing how causal racism was...
  20. This thread has been in the stratosphere lately. It's time to fix that and I'm just the one to do it. I picked up two nice WDC&S from Heritage a couple of weeks ago. One of the things I like abut these WWII vintage books is the war related gags. Here's a couple of Taliaferro strips from #60. These are both odd gags to a modern eye, but apparently the editors thought that the intended readership would get them: These make kind of a spiritual link between two of my favourite collection strands. ( This being the other.)
  21. tb, I agree with your assessment of those books. When it's all said and done, there's very little difference in 'technical grade' between 9.2 and 9.4 (or .6 or .8 for that matter) and eye appeal trumps it for me every time. Not, I hasten to add, that I am likely to be swmming in the same pool as you any time soon... Thank you for sharing some of your beautiful collection again.
  22. Yep, you are almost certainly in the top ten, but it's tough competition...
  23. My eyes! The goggles do nothing! Seriously, that is a drop-dead gorgeous copy. (Not that it's setting a precedent around here lately...)
  24. I saw that post - and realised I was unfamiliar with the two issues of DD he ascribed to United Features that apparently come between FC 4 and 9. For you more knowledgeable types, this is what is known as 'a teachable moment'...
  25. Hi grade 1930s books and a bar graph. Nerdvana. Thanks for sharing.
