9.8? Im not sure..
Bomber-Bob replied to N7 M31's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
The alignment problem often occurs when the cover sticks to the inside of the inner well while the insides of the book shift. You can see that your book has shifted to the bottom of the well. Look at the large gap at the top. The book has even settled in at a slight angle. You can try tapping the slab and getting things aligned BUT it may cause damage at the staples. I don't think it's microchamber paper sticking out. I don't even think they use microchamber paper in a Modern Book. I would store this book flat, horizontally. Storing it vertically may cause more stress at the staples which nay result in tears. This kind of stuff is called SCS, Shaken Comic Syndrome and used to be way more problematic with the original design of the slab. To answer your question about a 9.8, remember, it's a 9.8 when graded. After encapsulation and shipping, maybe not. -
Interesting. Sounds like dealers are the worst customers ! I can understand a dealer buying bulk wanting a discount. However, to buy something to immediately flip to a waiting customer sounds like something that should be frowned upon.

When dealers are buying from other dealers from their fairly priced key stock do they expect a discount ?

Grading question Saga #1
Bomber-Bob replied to Nathan81's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
HaHa. But they are all like that to some degree. The absolute WORST is when the owner or manager is a smoker and sometimes smokes inside. -
Personally, I never read a comic directly. I read TPB's, Marvel Masterworks, DC Archives, etc. Sometimes I can read the new Walking Dead issues while standing there in the LCS. It's such a fast read.

IMO, you should not submit reader copies for grading.

I think this is Doug's copy that didn't meet reserve, up for auction on Heritage. I didn't realize there are 9 copies in 9.0 with 5 higher. Last time I checked the census was a lot lower. https://comics.ha.com/itm/silver-age-1956-1969-/the-brave-and-the-bold-28-justice-league-of-america-dc-1960-cgc-vf-nm-90-off-white-pages/p/7169-40019.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515

Absolutely. If I buy a PGX book it will definitely be in the 50 - 100 dollar category.
-
I hate stories of gaming the system like that. No argument from me that PGX is suspect. I'm not defending PGX in any way, just saying there are some bargains out there. If I buy a PGX slab, I usually always crack it out. Over the years, I have resubbed maybe a half dozen books to CGC. These would have been books that looked exceptionally good to me and under graded. I think I had one that went down and the rest all went up with no cleaning or pressing. As someone else mentioned, their grading isn't bad. It's just that they miss stuff and their integrity is suspect.

Fantastic Four 1, heavily taped spine. Grade?
Bomber-Bob replied to UncleAnwar's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
I'm assuming the cover is detached, previously held on with tape, and now with extra staples. This is a 0.5 with a Blue Label, as mentioned above ,with notation about the tape and extra staples. -
I'm not familiar with this incident nor do I understand what you are saying, I think you may have a typo ? But assuming a PGX slabbed book had missing pages, okay, I'm sure it happens. I'm not saying I like PGX, nor would I ever submit to them. I'm just saying you can sometimes pick up a bargain with a PGX slab, with probably less risk than many raw E-Bay offerings.
-
I just bought a PGX in auction, inexpensive 9.2 Bronze, bargain price. I'll crack it out when I get it. PGX is still more reliable than an E-Bay raw grade. I would never submit to PGX or buy an expensive PGX book but for a book that I'll keep raw, why not ?

Amazing Spider-Man Collecting Thread!
Bomber-Bob replied to Point Five's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
Sweet book. If the book is staying in your collection, leave it alone. If you ever decide to sell, then get it pressed. I've had a couple bad experiences on books in my personal collection that I tried to 'process'. I've learned to leave them alone. -
Grading question Saga #1
Bomber-Bob replied to Nathan81's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
I've helped out also, although I would go in on Tuesday when the books actually arrive. You are correct, out of the box, many books have problems. I also think it comes from the handling of the staff, who usually don't have the same appreciation for condition as some of us. Lunchtime, eating burgers and fries, a cursory wipe of the hands and then handling the books. Standing the books vertically, reaching in and grabbing books for the pull list, smoke break smell on fingers, grabbing a stack of books with one hand and squeezing them onto the wall shelves. Don't think they call in sick = coughing, sneezing around the books. Gotta go to the bathroom, grab a new book to read while you're in there. Counting the books to match the invoice, here come the finger bends. Crazy stuff. Getting first shot at books is important my friends. -

Yes, the last pic shows a deep spine crease. When I said it bothers me the most, it is because it appears to break color and will not press out. -

Thanks. I've had different copies before but my OCD regarding Spidey's face in the yellow banner near the bottom drove me nuts. Often, the eyes are cut off. It's analogous to the double quote on a TOS 39, if you are familiar with that. -
Grading question Saga #1
Bomber-Bob replied to Nathan81's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
When a book is graded 'New,Unread' it usually means it is a really nice book that has problems. Technically NM is a grade of 9.4 . As is, I would grade not grade this book 9.4 , more like 9.0. I think pressing can help some of these flaws but that crease on the spine bothers me the most. -
Strange tales # 113 PGM
Bomber-Bob replied to Gabriel Contreras's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Love that date stamp hiding in the trees ! I would grade this 7.5 but CGC would probably give it an 8.0 . Nice book, nice cover reds ! -

[Re-holder?] Tiny white spots over black ink on cover

FYI, this thread is 4 years old and the Poster hasn't been on in over 3 years. In summary, you will probably NOT get an answer. -
Signature Series price question

Talking Prices is frowned upon here. You need to do your own research. Sorry.
