  1. I think we both know how difficult it is to get the Registry points adjusted. I lobbied for some adjustments to the 'formulas', assuming they could implement via some programming changes but they told me it can't be done. It is a manual effort with each entry of the individual tables changed one by one. The tables themselves are huge with all the permutations of grade, Resto Tiers, Signature Service, etc. Anyway, understanding this better, I have refrained from making any more requests. I still use the Registry but it is no longer competitive for me. Recognition of the DCU variant would be cool but it's not important to me as I have no intention of pursuing a slabbed collection of these. I also don't have the energy to discuss this further with RMA .
  2. When dealing in the uber high grades, I think the best candidates for pressing have a light fold that can sometimes only be seen by looking at the book at an angle. Usually a fugly, overgraded book is not a good candidate for pressing. The presence of a CVA sticker on a Clink book gives me confidence that the back cover is okay. Also, I hate rusty staples, even slightly rusted. Often, the staple is on the vertex or the BC and not visible in the scan. Again, the CVA sticker gives me confidence that the staples are okay. I don't bid on the book because of the sticker but it certainly doesn't hurt to be there. Every book I ever won with a CVA sticker looked excellent in hand. If others don't like it, so be it. There's a lot worse going on with comics these days, scamming wise, than a silly sticker.
  3. I wouldn't be surprised. It was probably developed in the late 90's. I'm sure they have newer architecture for the graders but all the census and Registry stuff is probably legacy.
  4. I think they would readily admit the system is 'poor' and outdated. They probably have an old DOS system for data input. How could the community 'help' without physically being there, hands on ? Sometimes simply putting more people on a project does not help. Anyway, I don't feel like debating this. As I said, the DCU is a worthy candidate but I just don't think it will happen. Nuff said.
  5. Why ? You can't see the insides of a comic in the slab anyway. I just don't think you understand what their service is providing. In any case, what's the big deal ? It's just a small sticker. We should be arguing for the abolishment of the CLink sticker, now that is irritating.
  6. No argument. However, from past discussions with CGC about the census/Registry, it is not an easy task for them to implement. I lobbied, unsuccessfully, for some things in the past to no avail. They made me realize that so many of these 'would be nice' changes would require many man hours to implement, which they really can't spare. I guess all this data is nothing more than big spreadsheets.
  7. I don't know of anyone that actually 'uses' their service = submits to them. However, I suspect their main client is Clink. While I would never submit a book to them, I do think it is filling a void, especially with Clink not showing us the Back Cover. I am more confident bidding on a CLink book with a CVA sticker. AS was previously mentioned, why all the hate for this silly little sticker ? It's really no big deal.
  8. I wonder if they gave consignors a heads up this was going to happen. I would be mad if I submitted a big item to hear this news. IMO, the sales tax will be figured into the bid of the buyer, which effectively means less for the seller. I realize this is the future of online buying but HA sure seems anxious to lead the charge.
  9. However, I don't think CGC is working on a 'resolution'. They think everything is fine, which technically it is because the books are not affected.
  10. It's not that I'm against it, but I don't think very many of these get slabbed. At a glance, I don't see any on E-Bay. Most of the underlying books are usually not worth getting slabbed. Personally, I would never submit or buy a slabbed copy.
  11. Some advice: Don't talk about profit on the internet. Since you are supposed to declare the Capital Gains on your Income Tax, it's just prudent to not say anything. I had a large collection and when I retired I thought the same thing as you, start selling them myself. Not as easy as it sounds. If your books are raw, be prepared for complaints, returns, damage during shipment, Paypal claims, E-Bay claims, Credit Card claims, etc. If you get them slabbed, be prepared for some giant expenses. Anyway, your call, I wish you luck.
  12. One thing I discovered early on is that, for Purple labels, CGC does not ignore the flaw that's been restored. So the book may look much better than the grade. IE CT is covering up a crease, the crease is still deducted from the grade. Note this is different than the Green Qualified Label where the flaw is ignored. Unless you enjoy selling 10,000 books yourself, I would sell the collection, sans a few keepers, as a lot to a dealer.
  13. You are correct about keeping this thread active to make others aware of the theft.
  14. I agree. Leroy is one of the good guys. He works hard for his inventory and doesn't deserve to have this happen to him. I sure he is feeling terrible right now. While I think there are some really good security related comments in this thread, I just don't think he is interested in reading them at the moment. Perhaps another thread would be the best approach.
  15. I hate guys that always try to game the system. Nowadays, it's all about trying to get something past CGC. I also hate guys that game the system and brag about it. I think you should supply this guy's name. At least contact CGC about him. Perhaps they can ban him.
  16. Yes, but there is no guarantee. Resto can still be caught by the graders.
  17. I agree with MarvelManic's comments, however, I just wanted to point out a Green Label is generally frowned upon by collectors and it takes a big hit on the valuation. I'm sorry to say the hole is a major flaw and will definitely hurt the value no matter what color the label.
  18. Leroy, I'm in shock that this happened. I'm speechless. While I'm sure there are some lessons to be learned here, I don't think it helps to bring them to your attention now. I just hope you have success in getting the book returned to you.
  19. I'm new to this genre after picking up a few books from electricprune here on the Boards. Here's a few I picked up this weekend....
  20. I'll clarify my comment, I think they are essential if you are storing them upright, in a long box. If you are stacking them horizontal, as long as you treat them carefully, yes they will be fine. You are correct, many pedigree collections were stored this way, when long boxes did not exist. I assumed the OP would store his books in a long box. BTW, if stored vertically, in a long box without boards, I would prefer no bags, just raw. The books, with just a bag, tend to slide down into the box.
  21. Yes, this gives the appearance that the crowds are sparse but I think attendance was fine. The larger aisles are much better.
  22. I would NOT risk it. Between shipping, handling, cracking the book out of the case, new encapsulation, stuff can happen. Even a fingerprint will lower the grade. It is not worth the risk.
