  1. No major flaws, no chunks missing just a lot of general wear. IMO, a 'classic' 4.5 .
  2. There's a lot of wear with loss of color on the vertex of the spine. With all the creasing and the stain on the BC I just can't grade it higher than 5.0 but CGC is so loose in this grade range I wouldn't be surprised at 5.5 . It is a very attractive book. Congrats !
  3. I feel safer when they use wedges. I have no idea how they decide when to use the wedges.
  4. I've noticed that the eye appeal on high grade books is greatly enhanced in the new holder. However, above and beyond the Newton Rings, I think the eye appeal of lower grade books is worse in the new slabs. It's like the new holder accentuates the flaws. I still prefer the old slabs where you could open them more easily and use the paper trick to eliminate the Newton Rings. Another observation, if you are shipping both new generation and old generation in the same shipment, unless you put something between them, the new cases put pressure on the old cases, resulting in cracking.
  5. Don't normally collect this genre but I had the opportunity and thought it would be fun to pick up a few .................
  6. Yes, you are correct about my submissions. I also see your point on the SS stuff.
  7. It really makes you wonder. If they can have errors on the labels and errors with the accounting, can they have errors with the grade ? Do you think that sometimes the wrong grade is input ? I once submitted a book, issue #98 of a title. The book was in the 8.5 range with some obvious flaws. It got a grade of 9.8 . I often wondered if the issue number influenced an error.
  8. I am sorry this happened to you. I have learned to sit down with any newly arrived slab and thoroughly inspect the whole book. I'm talking stare at it . Not just the slab but the book inside the slab. What you experienced could happen even without damage to the slab if the book is a little loose inside the inner well. I like it when CGC uses a wedge to hold the book in place. I think it helps. My advice is usually to ask for your money back if the slab has sustained damage. As you discovered, the damage was not isolated to the slab. Returning a 15 dollar Reholder fee does not cut it. I suspect the slab, when originally shipped, had some movement inside the packaging so this is on the seller.
  9. I'm going to respectfully disagree that QC at CGC is statistically as bad as you are inferring. You stated 'Rarely do I get a submission back without any label errors'. You must have tremendously bad luck. Over the years, with probably a couple thousand submissions, I only recall having one label error. Also, it's not the fault of QC that your book arrived with a crack in the slab.
  10. Now here is where the misunderstand lies. 5.0 to 5.5 is not a whole point, just one tick. I believe both Roy and I thought you meant a full point, like 7.0 to 8.0. This discussion is all about semantics.
  11. Yes, it can if you are dealing in the uber grades, but not a whole point. It may tilt a 'tweener' to the higher grade. A sloppy job can also result in noticable loss of gloss which can lower the grade.
  12. Roy is 100% correct. So many of you think the grade is strictly analytical, based on the addition and subtraction of 'points'. It's not. It depends on the flaw, with certain flaws allowed in certain grades. Sure, an accumulation of flaws will lower the grade but again, it depends on the specific flaws.
  13. That's not exactly what Roy said but yes, two identical books, one with a crease, one without may grade the same. Let's say a book has a large piece missing and it has a crease. You can remove the crease but, because of the large piece missing, the grade stays the same. The higher the grade, with less flaws on the book, removing a crease can improve the grade. In summary, you are BOTH right.
  14. I doubt it. The census is for graded books. Technically, the NG books are not graded.
  15. Your example is called a remainder copy. They are not usually considered collectable, more of a reader copy. If submitted, it would probably not grade much more than a .5 . Sorry.
  16. As everyone has stated, this is a color rub = the color is gone in that location. An otherwise high grade book will be hammered, in the mid grades, not so much. If this is a 9.6 or 9.8 otherwise, I think you will be looking at 9.2 range. I'm curious as to why you would think a press could remove it ? It's crazy that so many think a press will cure anything and everything.
  17. I started buying comics as a kid at the tail end of the 10 cent era. For a quarter I could get two comics and a nickel candy bar, yes that's all they cost back then. Now the price goes to 12 cents so I had to settle for my two comics and a penny gumball. Still ticks me off to this day. HaHA !
  18. Even with all the creases, the book presents well with no junks missing, no chipping, etc. Just a lot of wear. When I see a book with this much wear that is pressed. it just doesn't look right, unnatural. I don't believe a press will increase the grade. What would it fix other than to flatten out some color breaking creases that would still be there. It appears this book is in a first generation new holder. Is that why you are sending it in ? That should help the rippling effect on the book. I think CGC is still accepting these for a free reholder but I would check with them first.
  19. What is your objective, what results from a CPR resub are you hoping for ? A clean and press will not get rid of the resto. Are you hoping that they will have a different opinion this time about the resto ? Are there flaws that a press/cleaning would help ? This is a really nice looking book with minimal restoration. I just got through reading a thread where two different submitters were complaining that the crack/press/resub caused damage to the book. I believe the one guy submitted a 7.0, in the slab, and it came back 5.5 with a detached staple. I don't want to read about something like that happening to this nice book. IMO, unless CGC says they may change their stance on the resto, leave it alone.
