  1. Yup. Charest is now a superb artist, but when he started out he had a terrible Image Comics style. I've been trying to remember a cover I saw that had some really bad, stumpy-looking figure work, but I suspect, maybe, I've been thinking about some of his interior artwork.
  2. I agree. 556 is better, same reasoning as you. I was never a fan of Alpha Flight. Nowhere near as good as Byrne’s FF run.
  3. Steve, you’re clearly not as much of a John Byrne fan as I am, so what’s your assessment of this classic cover? Interesting use of empty space, or phoned-in laziness?
  4. Yup. Alex Ross always aspired to achieve the level of absolute, photographic realism you see in the painted artwork here. It's really quite an incredible achievement.
  5. One of my all-time most significant writer / artists, and I've followed his work from the 70s onwards, starting with Rog 2000. Iron Fist, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Superman, Namor, Omac, Next Men, are all runs I re-read. This week I finished the DC Universe collection, which has lots of nice, relatively obscure stories, and thoroughly enjoyable.
  6. I admire your sophistication. Keep the red wine away from the Hulk 181, though.
  7. The Dire Wraiths were quite unsettling at times. One of the best extraterrestrial threats to appear in comic books.
  8. I don't really read newspapers anymore. I watch BBC News HD, occasionally look at some articles on my tablet. From what's being discussed here, Newsbiscuit and The Daily Mash offer more accurate reporting than The Mail does these days.
  9. I haven't read the Daily Mail since the late 80s. Didn't seem too bad back then.
  10. Technology moves on. Amazon is currently developing Comixology and Kindle apps for mobile devices, which will be able to replicate a nostalgically-acrid newsprint odour. Currently in its early stages, and still smelling a bit ozone-like, similar to what you might expect from a tablet which is electrically shorting out. But, I'm confident they'll get there in the end.
  11. In the UK you could see it starting to hit hard around 1994. Talking of Pre-Unity Valiants, 1993, a copy of Harbinger 1 was £100, by summer / autumn 1994 you could find them for £5.
  12. I've never owned more than 2 copies of any issue at any one time. My first was Savage Tales 1.
  13. And, he'd been just another writer in the industry for two decades until he finally devised his winning SA Marvel formula. Hardly a charmed, instant sensation. A lot of perseverance.
