Whatever happened to... (Boardies from yesteryear)
Ken Aldred replied to Dr. Balls's topic in Comics General
In the 2010s I got the impression that this became a place for newer, younger, inexperienced collectors to pay a quick visit, ask questions about characters or books, see if any posts from older, more knowledgeable collectors could be used for speculation, and then disappear off to monetise it. That for me seemed to be the beginning of some degree of stagnation in growth for the community, and little additional contribution from the new blood in terms of actually caring about the medium itself. -
Revealed at last! The Joker's birth name!

Careful. You’re setting yourself up for some Bruce jokes. Still, at least a great super-hero character with that first name. Can’t think of one called Nigel. -
No. This sort of thing often turns up during a clearout or house renovation, that type of situation.

Terrible name. Nothing clever about the birth name of a character foreshadowing how that character ends up. It’s a cliché. -

That was in the Batman film with Jack Nicholson. A pun on jackanape, or trickster. -

I just read The Three Jokers. Two remain unnamed. -

Gav / Boozad still turns up every so often for a quick post. Still a blink and you’d miss it situation, though. -

Always enjoyed Chespirito’s inventive stories in some of his posts. Marvelfangirl contributed a lot here for a while and then disappeared. -
His pre-internet prices didn’t seem as bad, so I wonder what stimulated the change in attitude?

Yup. Very intense days back then, especially for an obsessive-compulsive kid like me in England. There was a certain American comic book I wanted, only the newsstand available to me, often without many issues never distributed over here, and, no comic shops, no idea how to get hold of mail order lists or fanzines, being unaware of any other serious readers or collectors in the area, and the agitated dilemma of how to obtain that elusive book from a very distant country.

Marvel Fanfare - Is it canon? Any collectibility?
Ken Aldred replied to Blastaar's topic in Comics General
I concur. Quality-wise, it’s fantastic. Especially for the money. As previously stated by another boardie, a pity the quality couldn’t be maintained. Some interesting stuff, such as the Perez Black Widow, BWS’ Thing short, but very patchy as a run overall. -

Nice Michael Golden art in that issue. -
They'd be completely clueless, be told there's nothing valuable, and take £50 for the lot. It's the kind of scenario you can predict a mile off.

The nightmare for me is that after I go my collection could be sold off to Silver Acre Comics for a pittance. That's the closest big dealer. I'd rather the books would be shredded and turned into kindling for a funeral pyre. Probably couldn't do that these days though because of carbon emissions.

Mine were always a bit rubbish when I did model kits as a kid. I admire people with the high level of fine motor control to do it really, really well.

I envy Greg’s incredible DC 100 pager collection, but that’s about it.

They didn’t seem too bad back then, pre dotcom.

Help! Which of these 3 comics should I buy?
Ken Aldred replied to Blastaar's topic in Comics General
Both of the Bronze Age comics are great character introductions. I couldn’t choose between the two. -
One to wait for until the reviews come in. Super-hero games are patchy, often mediocre or poor, such as Avengers, sometimes great such as the recent Spider-Man titles, GOTG, and the earlier Arkham Asylum / City. Caution, rather than pre-order or early adoption for me. Hope it’s good, and can play through a few comic scenarios. Another point to consider is that Electronic Arts is a company renowned for placing features behind a pay-extra microtransaction wall, which understandably irritates many gamers.

I was just glad to get hold of one, and the week before Christmas last year. I’d assumed I would still be on PS 3 until well into this year, even now. So, I was grateful for the first console upgrade I’d bought in a decade. Don’t mind lagging behind on the curve, as at least the games end up being cheap entertainment. Lots of great PS4 material to get through, £10 to £15 range.

Being British, ‘Thee’ sounds like old school northern English dialect, and so to me she sounds like a singer in a 1930’s Yorkshire working mens’ club or bingo hall, who breeds racehorses (and possibly whippets as well), rather than a global rap megastar.

How much do you want Stan Lee's signature on your comics?
Ken Aldred replied to rfhbv100's topic in Comics General
Likewise. That would’ve been even more memorable and significant.
