  1. Wow, I've always wondered what that issue looked like. I guess the editor decided that a dining-room table turning into a cat made for a better cover than a giant, octopus-headed monster rising up out of the ocean while the crew of a tiny fishing boat flee in terror... Poor HPL. Only two pulp covers in his lifetime. I just recently read somewhere that he used to tear off every single Brundage cover because they offended his delicate sensibilities. Ever see the silent movie poster (circa 2005, I think)? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B000BQTC98/sr=8-9/qid=1265147835/ref=dp_image_text_0?ie=UTF8&n=130&s=dvd&qid=1265147835&sr=8-9
  2. Kudos to Dale Roberts for some great BA DC war books!
  3. I have been delinquent with my kudos; for that I apologize. Big Kudos to the following sellers! thirdgreenham shiverbones Inaflash Logan510 greggreece Fantastic, accurately graded comics (and pulps) well packaged and mailed with care! (thumbs u
  4. I don't have one either, but there's a pretty good Toth checklist in Comic Book Artist #11 (Twomorrows pub) that sez Frogmen #5 (Dell, 6/63) has a 27 pg Toth story with a 4 pg follow-up. I used to lurk on the Toth fans boards and people there seemed to think it was up there with his best. I've seen a picture of the cover on the Mile High website, but never a copy "in the flesh." I try to never buy from them, but their database is handy for research. And I've been meaning to go after those that Twilight Zone and Boris Karloff #5 as well...I have a nice file copy of Four Color 882 (Toth's first Zorro) in about a VF/VF+. In hindsight, I think I paid too much though. Someday I'll get a scanner, so I can show it off here.
  5. Shiver, you're a big Toth fan, right? Do you have Frogmen #5 by any chance?
  6. Hey, Shiver--- Neat-looking comics. I saw these in your "latest obsession" thread and tried to search for some copies for myself. All I can say is....hold on to them! They are impossible to find! (As I'm sure you know.)
  7. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. The truth is, the older I get the more tedious Moderns become with their grittiness, faux-realism and slavish devotion to continuity. I want to escape with my comics! Enough with the thinly-veiled parables to our modern, gritty, faux-realistic problems and their slavish devotion to continuity! I jest. Some moderns are OK.
  8. Would you folks mind if I interrupted the pictures to ask: which Gold Key titles do you recommend for reading? So far 've been leaning toward checking out the Adventure stuff: Magnus, Turok, Korak, Space Family Robinson, Mighty Samson, also Boris Karloff, Twilight Zone, Ripley's, Dagar and The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor. The covers are great, and I already appreciate Manning, Santos and Spiegle, but if I don't have nostalgia for these comics, does the writing hold up? (That makes me sound snobby, really, I'm just looking for fun stories!) BTW: I'm not against picking up one of the Dark Horse hardcover reprints, if it will be easier on the wallet. Thanks!
  9. Hey, Scrooge, thanks for bringing up Conan, that jogged my memory a bit. Some of the Marvel Conan GN from the late 80s/early 90s have not been reprinted by Dark Horse yet, and sometimes go for higher prices. Also, all of the Marvel/Epic Moebius GN titles have been going up in price because they haven't (as far as I know) been reprinted in English for nearly twenty+ years. (Again, I haven't checked on prices lately, and I have seen resistance on some higher prices over the years, specifically on eBay.) These are awesome reads, especially the Blueberry stuff, or if you have fond memories of Heavy Metal. If and when the Moebius stuff is reprinted, prices will probably go down. As graphic novels with original material become more exposed/praised in the mainstream media (I'm thinking Fun House, Blankets, Drinky Crow, etc.) these first printings may go up in price as well, and be bought/sold by comic and book collectors alike. Then again, it'll all be digital soon...
  10. This is an interesting question. From what (little) I've seen, an HC/TP reprint collection may go up a bit if it's out of print, but not every title all across the board. I guess I'm thinking of the Alias Omnibus, and the first volume of Dark Horse's Classic Star Wars reprints of the 70s Marvel material (called Doomworld, I think), both of which used to sell for high prices (haven't checked lately, though). I don't know about first prints of original material in GN form. Didn't Arkham Horror drop in price after the recent reprinting? First Printings may be important for somebody like Neil Gaiman, who has cross-over appeal with the book-collecting crowd. Maybe Alan Moore's Watchmen? Frank Miller's Dark Knight? Maus? Acme Novelty Library? JC is right, the stuff for grown-ups will probably never go up in value, but I sometimes wonder if some kid years from now will want a first printing of, say Scott Pilgrim, Fruits Basket or Naruto.
