Catholic comics - post ‘em if you got ‘em!
Professor Echo replied to jabats's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
I remember as a kid in the 60's seeing Treasure Chest and some others of its type at my dentist's office waiting room. I wonder if there were free or heavily discounted subscriptions offered for office waiting rooms back then? At that time I didn't care what a comic book was about, if it was a comic, I read it. I loved comics so much and could never afford to buy as many as I wanted so I just read everything I got my hands on. This one is before that time, from 1944 and actually looks like it might be an ok read, or am I still that little kid reading anything and everything? -

Thanks for starting this thread! It's a lot of fun and a challenge and it sure kept me fun busy on a lazy Sunday. Double header: -

While it may not be "notable/classic", you ask for skulls, you get skulls! -
Yes, I forgot about ACES HIGH when enumerating the New Direction titles above. I have a Dark Horse Archive collection of it, but have not read any of it yet. I'm glad to see you recommend it and now I look forward to checking it out. Thanks. Oh man, you guys just psychoanalyzed ME with those comments. I was summarily dismissive of the title in my post above, but the truth begging to come out of my tortured subconscious is that I've always wondered what the hell that comic might be on the inside. Now you've both whetted my imagination and there's no turning back. I think just based on uniqueness (i.e. weirdness) alone, it's worth a look, but I guess I just needed an intellectual shove to check it out. So thanks (I hope!). Now let's see how weak my resolve is on MD if someone chimes in with how good that one is. How can anyone say the 1950's were such a boring, complacent, conformist decade in our culture when so much strange lava kept bubbling to the surface?

Anyone enjoy this post code series from EC? I really liked the first issue, but I thought the next two were pretty dull. It's the first NEW DIRECTION title I've sampled and it's a bit disappointing because I thought even with elements watered down or completely dissolved the books might still be interesting on other levels. I'll read the whole series and then move onto IMPACT, VALOR and PIRATES and see if I like those. I don't see myself ever reading MD or PSYCHOANALYSIS, but never say never.

It would be Criminal not to show your CRIME comics!
Professor Echo replied to Robot Man's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
LDarkseid1, thank you for the info about the prisoner's stripes. Very interesting! But kind of weird too that they thought prisoners could apply such an abstract symbol of defeat and hopelessness, even subconsciously. Probably the idea of a Warden's wife somewhere way back in the day who read an article about Freud. Thanks for doing the legwork, which I was not too lazy to do, but you see, in this way we actually had a bit of a variation of a conversation which would not have happened if I had Googled it myself. Forums should be forums. Thanks again, man! -

Ok, this isn't mine, I stole it from the internet, but I don't care because I'm a wanton criminal and it only seems appropriate to post some stolen covers in this thread too. By the way, what was the deal with those striped uniforms prisoners wore for a lot of years back then? Is there some significance why they were designed that way? And why don't prisoners have to wear them anymore? Why did they stop being used? I could probably Google all this, but that's very anti-social. -
Karloff, Dell, TV horror and more.....
Professor Echo replied to 1950's war comics's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
Do you think they are worth seeking out and picking up for reading? I don't know what current prices are, but I'm guessing it's cheaper to sample at least some of these stories in the digests instead of trying to cherry pick the individual comic series. Advice anyone? -
Some Bronze Age Covers Are Just Way Too Busy

Silver Age, I know, but I sure wish someone could wipe out all the stories and dialog from every SEA DEVILS issue and completely rewrite them while still using Heath's stunning art.

Comics where the title is essential to the cover art

I knew it was from that show, though I never saw any episodes. My wife loved it, but in just overhearing while she was watching it didn't seem to be something for me. There's something that grates on my nerves about those live audience shows where they boost the volume of every little giggle to a roar. But maybe I'll catch up with it at some point. Never say never.

Were these exclusively reprinted stories or were there new ones in them too?
