  1. Those were great times! if only I would be invited back Did you drink all of their Cherry Coke Zero? nope...don't like cherry coke zero.... You got a problem with Cherry Coke Zero? well, yes...
  2. I think you forgot to ask him these two questions: When would the best time to rob you be? On the road after the show or immediately after Saturday's close? Do you have a lot of money on you when you go pee pee? its funny, I actually forgot my weapon last week for megacon...had to borrow a 9mm from my sister in law... I'm always packing at a con, whether you know it or not... I never knew that. Cool thread, Rick. Deposit the cash ASAP somewhere. Forget about the usual robbery suspects, you better hope some local police officer doesn't stop you for a traffic offense, search you, find the money, decide it is drug money and confiscate it on the spot resulting in you spending $30K in legal fees to prove you aren't a drug dealer and get it back. There are some real horror stories out there. I am in law enforcement (well, tangentially at least) and I would be afraid to drive around with much money on me on a long trip. would be pretty easy to see that the cash is from sale of comics (especially if I am driving around in a van full of comics ) and I obey all traffic laws
  3. are they on display in this cons setup? Not sure I saw them. I used to bring them to megacon (jim/flee did a video a few years ago with all of them) but for this show no reason to pay the extra insurance coverage when I can bring plenty of sellable books for display...but I did have a batman 1, as8, ww 1, cap 1 , cap 3, etc in a box under the table ...
  4. on a sidenote, glad that many of you all have enjoyed the thread

  6. I sometimes put NFS on them or PI....or if I'm really giddy I put a ridiculous price on them (no one has ever paid ) action 1, batman 1, etc...those type of books... if I feel its a replaceable book, then yes, on occasion I have sold, but not usually

  8. not big ticket... back in 2009 we did have 4 books stolen at nycc from a box that amounted to 10K...insurance paid and that was last time...we really try to really stay on top....
  9. I bet he wishes someone would steal the van since his insurance payoff would be fantastic. no way. Love the comics too much. If the insurance paid you 100% of what you hoped to sell the books for would you would still be sad they were gone? I would indeed.... I always bring "personal" books to shows to display...it often times adds the "wow" or draw factor.... so, given money is easy to replace and comics are often times not...yes, I would be sad big time....
  10. I think you forgot to ask him these two questions: When would the best time to rob you be? On the road after the show or immediately after Saturday's close? Do you have a lot of money on you when you go pee pee? I can't be the only one who has thought about this, so I thought I'd point it out, and hopefully matters can be addressed BEFORE something happens (or already have been addressed). $1M in comics plus $50,000 cash makes a tasty target. State lines and planes make security hard to 'carry'. I wouldn't walk around in florida with $200 in cash, let alone $50K. On unrelated note, I've just come up with the plotline for the nerdiest heist movie in history. Pretty sure it would star Seth Rogen and James Franco. And hopefully Danny Mcbride. it is actually very easy to carry....just check your destination state's concealed laws and make sure your concealed license is valid there... and if not, carry anyway!

  12. very few "big " buys are in cash...most are checks from known entities...CC or paypal, deals made with future wire transfer, and, on a rare occasion, cash... we did 500K one NYCC a few years ago and maybe 20K was cash... I would be happy to do a separate thread on cost analysis sometime, but that was not the intent of this thread
  13. I will be setting up at heroes, ww Chicago , baltimore and maybe NYcc. I will be at sdcc but not set up (though I might bring some books). When is comicpalooza?
  14. I bet he wishes someone would steal the van since his insurance payoff would be fantastic. no way. Love the comics too much.
  15. All we leave in the van are $1 book in long boxes under 800 pounds of racks. I unload all cgc boxes into hotel room with me (thumbs u
  16. I bet there are more comic buyers at the Barcelona con than SDCC
  17. Wow, that is spectacular. How much does it cost a stand like this one at a major con (SDCC, NY, C2S2)? Thanks at sdcc this would run $3700 I believe. Approx $3300 at NYcc. About $2200 at ww Chicago I don't know why, but I thought it would be more expensive. that's booth costs alone... it costs us about $10,000 to do SDCC and NYCC...about $6,000 to do Chicago, about about $3000 to do shows we can drive too... it's not cheap
  18. What did I miss? nothing... someone posed a stupid question about a bodily function...it's gone now
  19. Where do you live in Florida? I assumed you were in Miami but I see its a 3 hour drive up to Orlando from Miami - was the 6 hours due to traffic? Lived in Miami in the mid 90s. We are in the nw panhandle of Florida, opposite end of the state

  21. Would also like to know this Sorry. Missed this. 1-I don't really. Most of what I sell I don't have the margins to discount to allow a dealer to resell. There are always exceptions but I don't really sell much to other resellers. 2-I do alter my material based on venue. This is generally learned from experience...no real "data" out there other than experience setting up 3-our store is there for our customers. We are happy breaking even. Cons are fun...my wife likes to travel, I really enjoy meeting with and see new and old friends, and yes, I generally make a fair profit I don't understand your response to #1. Isn't your margin directly connected to your profits (which you say are good)? Are you saying you pay a premium for your top shelf inventory (you do have an amazing inventory) so you don't have the ability or desire to discount books like other dealers? I can't wait to check out your booth at Heroes in a couple months. My general margins on better books is not strong enough to offer a discount (generally) to anyone. I've always operated my business with the "volume" mentality. When we were distributing toys/action figures, we built out business on lower margins than everyone but tremendous volume. I rather sell 100 items at $1 profit than 10 items at $5. I've kind of taken same approach with comics.
  22. here's various pics along the way
