I don't think I understand your comments. Are you defending the practice of spine realignment ?  I realize that, according to the rules of restoration, it is 'legal' but I don't think it belongs in our hobby. The Avengers 1 was not an example of a spine roll flattened out. I remember seeing BC scans but I don't have them. I keep hearing that pages sticking out is 'normal' but not as exaggerated as this example.

No, I don't condone aligning the spine beyond how it was originally, but without the back scan I wouldn't assume it was. Usually a Avengers 1 pages will stick out a little but I can't see them in the before, which generally indicates a spine roll. I will however take your word for it if you saw the back cover, and the pages were not fanned out.

And there's the rub. It is going to be difficult, but micro trimming was in the beginning and they figured that one out.

How do we know the Avengers 1 example didn't have a pre-existing spine roll without a back scan? And if it did have a spine roll, am I understanding the general public would rather keep the spine rolls then see the pages stick out? By the way, Pages sticking out on early Silver age is normal from production cuts.

  3. The grade CGC gives the book is on it's apparent condition. Your confusion is probably related to the fact that quite often restored books look nicer than the grade they receive. Color touch can make a book look really good at arm's length, but under grading and inspection you can see all the stress lines and defects that still keep the grade down. Also the grade would depend on if work was done on the interior of the cover, and possibly the pages.

You got Airbnb right across the street? I ended up on the other side of the zoo! lol

I have a standard received on 4/11 that was at verified until 4/25 and now remains at scheduled for grading

So then it is really back to the last minute again already, just when I was hoping for a 10 day TaT.

I have no desire to debate the pressing issues. My advice is simply if he likes the book as is, why mess with it. Anything can happen. We see posts all the time about this book didn't have this corner ding when sent in, this book is rippling in the slab, etc. etc. etc.

I understand that point, and if it was my book I would just leave it. As far as anything happening, almost every choice invites risk. ;)

Understand, but if the book is a sentimental keeper, why would a grade nudge make any difference ? Also, to some collectors, like myself, a clean and press takes away the originality of the book. I've had many books pressed and I've learned to leave the keepers alone. Sometimes the book just doesn't look the same.  The 'alignment' may change, the signature ink may smear, staples tears may be introduced, heck even the placement in the new slab may look off. For OCD collectors like myself, if you like the look of the keeper book you have in hand, leave it alone.

Personally I think you sent the books to the wrong presser, a well pressed book will not look pressed other than no pressable defects found.
