  1. How about we meet at El Torito after the con and bang down margaritas in the bar area -- so no one has to try to organize a dinner or front any money?
  2. Dave Stevens This post is about Modern comics rather than Silver or Gold, but it's about the late great Dave Stevens so hopefully you'll bear with me. To me, my biggest collecting milestone in 2017 was taking over the top spot in the Dave Stevens Covers registry set. If you want to compete in this set, you must have 3-D Zone 16 in CGC 9.8. But, while it's kind of pricey, it's not rare or hard to get on eBay. I actually got my copy on C-Connect (or maybe it was C-Link, I don't remember). I also have a bunch of raw copies that I bought for grading purposes before getting the graded copy. One or two might grade out at 9.8 but neither is a slam dunk so they sit in mylar with an acid free board in my "Dave Dups Box." Here's my only 9.9 Dave Stevens comic. And what a comic, right? If a 10.0 of anything Stevens ever hits the market I will be all in and I * WILL * NOT * BE * DENIED! I went directly to the publisher for this Sirens. He had a few uncirculated boxes in his basement. I bought about 5 copies and he agreed to pick the best ones. One came back 9.8 and another 9.6. I have the others in the Dups box. Here's maybe my rarest Stevens comic -- rare only because I've never seen another copy. This is of course the same cover of Cheval Noir 1. My copy is only 9.6. There's a 9.8 on eBay right now but at $300 it's too rich for me. Finally, here's maybe my most treasured Stevens' comic, Cheval Noir 7. It's autographed by Dave, and his signature is verified by the other company. Look, I love CGC and I use them exclusively as my grading company. I've never submitted anything to any other company except this book. Because, this is a service that CGC doesn't offer -- to verify signatures, as opposed to (what CGC does) certify creators signing books. Although, this is probably a small market so I can see why CGC doesn't do it. But I wish CGC would add this service so I can add books like this to my registry sets.
  3. I hear ya. My schedule is: work trip to SF, get back and go to LA for 24 hours for Terry's con, and then work trip to Germany/Bulgaria. I hope you can make it though. My first stop will be your booth.
  4. I'll be there -- I look like Superman but I'll be in my secret identity
  5. And the couple (as well as their sandals) are color coordinated!
  6. I'm Going To Terry's Con! Yes! My wonderful wife just gave me the a-okay to go to Terry's con (officially the California Comic Convention in Orange County, which I guess is to make sure you don't confuse it with that other con in San Diego). http://www.calcomiccon.com/ I wasn't sure if I could go since it's over a weekend, but the wife said ok since I'm taking her with me on a work trip the next week to Bulgaria (yes, really). I'll be in LA for only about 24 hours but I'm sure that'll be enough time for some damage to my bank account. Looking forward to seeing other boardies there. Now all of a sudden I need to get my want list up to date and think about other comic con-related preparation. I've still got business cards from NYCC. Here's one, with a spoon to show scale. Thanks for reading.
  7. Great pickup! I'm surprised to see that one changing hands so soon. I think it was last sold in March, just after I got my raw copy.
  8. My First Buy of 2018 I've been looking at this on Lone Star's website for some time now, finally decided to pull the trigger.
  9. Great cover! Just added this one to my want list.
  10. Last Buys of 2017 Here are some of my last buys of 2017. This first one is a pulp from 1938. I stumbled on it in eBay and it caught my eye. I also stumbled on this one -- it's amazing what's offered on eBay. It's from 1942 and has art by Bill Ward. Lately I've been focusing on Jungle Comics. Here are 2 recent pickups. Among Fiction House titles, it's amazing how cheap prices still are for Jungle (and Jumbo too). I also picked up Jungle 101, which fits in my Dastardly GGA Bondage collection. I got it cheap, mostly because @Ricksneatstuff bowed out after I told him I was bidding on it. I would have won it anyway as my max bid was higher than Rick's, but by withdrawing I saved about $100. Thanks Rick! Finally, I picked up this cool custom Mego Gwen Stacy. I hope everyone has a great New Years!
  11. Is this 10% off? My phone makes it hard to tell. But if it is then I’ll take it (only fitting my last buy of the year would be from Rick)
  12. Renewing Our Wedding Vows 2017 marked our 25th wedding anniversary, so my wife and I splurged and took our family to Hawaii for Christmas (I travel enough for work that points helped with flights and the hotel). We did one of those vow renewals on the beach. The officiant looked like a surfer (or one of the Beach Boys) with long hair and flowers in his hair. He doubled as the photographer, and for one photo he had us wade into the water, and then run out as the waves came in. It was a blast! Anyway, hope everyone had a good Christmas, and Happy New Year!
