  1. I would say 8.5 minimum. The crease on the edge, the ding on the upper right corner and wear on the lower left corner should keep this out of the mid-9s, but a generous grader could maybe go to 9.0-9.2. But a really beautiful book overall. And white pages too. The wrapping is off a bit but the bound edge looks like it's kept its color and gloss. Pressing might improve the upper right corner. I'm thinking the color fade above angel in the title is a printing defect?
  2. And does this mean there are no cameras around CGC grading facilities?
  3. This may have been covered, but didn't CGC start out requiring 2 or 3 graders for each book to make sure there was an independent consensus? This seemed like a good model to reduce bad actors acting badly. Maybe the should change the workflow so that at least each sub gets an extra pair of eyes on it. Maybe the 2nd grader can just verify the first graders notes and make sure something else big isn't missed and agree or disagree with the assigned grade. This shouldn't require as much time/money as the first grader.
  4. Is that ridge seen on pics 3-5 from pressing with a board underneath the cover? And if so does this have an impact on the CGC grade?
  5. I wonder if the crease on the upper left cover is not a manufacturing issue? It seems like they had to have ignored it to bring this to a 9.6.
  6. They do line up, but it did get me thinking what would happen if it wasn't so clear, or if a page was cut neatly with a razor so there was no proof to which book it belonged. I guess the purple label would be for if I got a restorer to stick them back together with leaf casting or something.
  7. Thanks for the explanation and images. very clear and more interesting than I thought it would be. I guess if you wanted to stick with a blue label, you'd have to take the hit to the grade for the book length tear. Seems fair, although 4.0 doesn't seem so bad for that. Almost tempted to seek these books out for a nicely presenting copy that's a lot cheaper :)
  8. I'm wondering how CGC grades a book where an interior page is detached (from a rip), but still present in the book. Technically the book would be complete in the slab with no pages missing, but no longer attached to the rest of the book. Say the book is a 6-7ish, would it be still treated as incomplete and get a qualified grade? or would it be treated as a book length tear and the grade would be knocked down? Should I consider getting it professionally reattached and get a restored grade? Thanks for any insight!
  9. Can we zoom out a little to get some context? Looks like a similar issue I had with a book I bought.
  10. I'm new here but this was exactly my thought process.. think I'm getting the hang of it
  11. From what I've read the E. Gerber fullbacks are not coated. That there is no smooth coating and the entire board is made from acid-free material. But that the white side is not smooth since it is not coated (apparently any side can face the comic?). That's why I was concerned about the impression changing the smooth comic texture. I 've never held one so I don't know how "rough" it is, but I've heard it's rougher than the rough side on typical backing boards from the 80s-90s.
  12. Thanks the picture links are dead on that thread so I put some relevant ones here if anyone would like to save some time... Does anyone have any idea about the rough textured full backs impressing on the comic cover?
  13. I'm back in after being out of collecting a few decades and want to reboard and bag my old stuff (still in bags from the 80s). I decided to go with Mylites 2 and either full or half backs. Almost all of my books are standard marvel size from the early 60s to the late 80s. Should I go with Standard Size or Golden Age Size? For backing boards, I've heard fullbacks have a rough exterior (not glossy smooth coated). If the books are packed tight, will this impress a weird texture to the comic over time? Thanks for your input!
  14. Could someone point out to me why this might get 7.5? It looks pretty nice. Is it mostly the spine ticks? I would guess 8-8.5. I've seen spine ticks on 9.0s, but these are a bit too excessive for that grade. Am I missing something?
