  1. They talked about making the comics so they have the feel of the 60's. I wonder if the comics will be modern or silver age sized?
  2. Dang, after 35 years I'm planning on finally buying more Mylites. Last time I bought them I got a thousand for $110.00. I figure I've got to buy close to 20k more, plus backing boards, to bag and board my whole collection..I guess I'd better start saving up.
  3. One channel I typically watch and I haven't seen listed here is Bronze and Modern Gods, and seeing they only have 3,300 subs, it is understandable. Yesterday they posted a video with Chuck from Mile High. I didn't get a chance to watch that one as it was just under an hour long, but I will watch it tonight.
  4. He's setting it up so that when the unsuspecting buyer purchases this and sends it off and then it gets a lower grade, he'll say "see, they damaged it, because of course it was a 9.8 when you got it from me".
  5. This thread is entertaining I'll say for sure. Much more so than some comics I've read in the past.
  6. Okay, the selfie thing isn't going to work I guess. How about turn your phone on video mode, show your logged in account on your home pc, if a pc is what you use, then get up and walk outside while videoing the area, without showing enough where people could figure out you or your address. I think that that would be enough to prove that you are not even in the same area as the cupcake guy. Yeah I know it's crazy, maybe scratch this. One thing I judge people on is their actions. Has anyone been harmed? felt wronged? was it justified? etc.. I would tend to think that a known and habitual scammer, no matter how much they tried, would still make a mistake at some point when having an alias/shill account.
  7. This whole thread reads like a made for tv movie. JJJ - I think that it would be really easy to prove to everyone that you are not Danny. Just take a quick screenshot of your latest post, print it, hold it up next your face and take a selfie and post it. You can even half hide your face or whatever to keep you anonymous - problem solved. Just show enough to prove that. Me, I honestly do not think that you are him. In regards to another post about finding out someone's grandpa was a Nazi. I better burn my photo album then. I am not lying when I say the only uniform I ever wore was one of that type, that I can remember anyways...but for the rest of the story, it was for a Halloween party back in the 80's and luckily my photo has a Halloween pumpkin on the calendar right over my shoulder. I can just see if I ever get into politics someone would grab that and post it online.
  8. I guess the reason I, myself, don't post more is that when I am typing, I'm not learning something new from someone else that posted something. I kind of equate it to when I'm talking, then I cannot at the same time hear what you are saying, so I'd rather keep quiet and learn. Plus I don't like arguing with people I am not in the same room with - I try to never argue online because it doesn't really accomplish much in my opinion, and only causes anger. Another reason is that I am here during my lunch hour at work, and that time goes way too fast for me to be spending my time typing instead of reading. (But I will try to post more often if I have something worth contributing.)
  9. Now I didn't read pages 45 through 63 yet, so I apologize if this has been asked. Scootrk, are you related to Cal? Something about your writing reminds me of him just a little.
  10. I suspect one reason for this, which I remember being talked out in the weekly CBG, was that Overstreet was concerned about copycats taking his work and publishing their own guides. So some errors are in the guide on purpose, just in case they want to go after another price guide saying they stole their work "See your honor, this issue doesn't exist except in our guide, and they copied it, here is the proof." I've read that there are a few items like that in Overstreet's guide, so that issue that you are trying to track down, may or may not exist. Mapmakers used to do the same thing, insert an occasional fake name or place just to catch the plagiarists. Krause published a large comic reference guide quite a few years ago, and they noted that they wouldn't put any fake/error entries in theirs like Overstreet does. I think that they figured due to the sheer research they did, it would be hard for someone to copy it without getting caught. So yeah, I doubt Overstreet will ever correct some of those errors many collectors bring to their attention.
  11. My biggest regret, which I am not sure qualifies as such, since I was only 8, was letting mom sell all of our comics at a garage sale back in 1971. Ten cents each. Wasn't much of a collection, just a whole lot of Marvel comics published between 1961 and 1970. I honestly don't remember them, but my older brother (who now doesn't collect) tells me what he remembers and it makes me cringe. Yep, there were some that would be worth a bit today. My second regret is not buying more comics at the used bookstore that my mother used to take me to. ....Early 1970's, a 4 x 8 ft table piled deep in golden and silver age comics, a dime each. Yep, I wish I had sense enough to buy the Superheroes instead of Casper, Richie Rich, and so forth. My third regret is not going to more farm auctions with my parents. Back in the early 80's they brought me home, if I remember correctly, over 400 Archie comics from the late 40's - 50's, plus some Pogo the Possum and other minor DC's I think. I've got notes of what was in that collection and I think my parents maybe paid $50 or something close to that. I just wish I had scouted out more of those auctions. But I don't regret never having ever sold a comic.
  12. My ex never minded me having comics, I just wasn't allowed to have much of any time with them, as when I wasn't at work or working some place, she needed to have me doing other things that she wanted done. Because she didn't work and slept until at least noon every day, the only "me" time I had was on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Oh how I used to look forward to those weekends. Now every day after work is like those weekends. My friends laugh when I tell them that it feels like I am on a permanent vacation/holiday. Now in the seven years she's been gone I've dug out my collection that I mostly had to leave dormant for close to the 20 years we were together, and am enjoying it now. (In fact in the upcoming weeks I'll probably post about the new collection that I'll be picking up soon, and that will be a whole story for another thread.) But my ex - she used to go to the motor city con with me every time that I could go, but now I look back I think it was so she could get selfies with whatever star was there. That gal loved (and still does from what I hear) posting her own pictures on Facebook. Yeah, if you're married to someone who is a narcissus, good luck to you, because the only thing important to that person is them. I hadn't realized this until I was single, it's like a spell was broken when she left, and I came out of a fog. I'm just glad I stuck to my guns about my stuff that I had before she was in the picture, and still have now that she's gone.
  13. So I went across the street (I think that is how it's referenced - or is it still referred to as Voldemorts?) and read the locked thread. Cal, you mentioned something about a youtube channel? I try to keep up on a bunch of Comic Book Youtube channels and I would like to know yours too so that I can check it out. And that goes for the same with anyone else here - please link me or if you don't want to add them to this thread then pm me the link please. I won't hit the dislike on any channel as I don't typically do that sort of thing. If I don't like something, then I will not watch it. My son laughed at me when he saw that I hit the like button on any and every video I watched all the way thru. I told him that if someone goes to the effort to put together a video, then they get a like from me. (But in my years of watching videos, I think I had hit the dislike maybe four or five times, all because of politics put in the videos, actually politics opposing mine if I may be so petty). Now I wonder how long it will take someone to put together a youtube video of "naked man on fire running thru a nursing home" starring Gary Busey
  14. This thread is a breath of fresh air to fight off the winter doldrums.
  15. Ok, I went and grabbed ten of my scans from my Mickey Mouse collection. Let's see if I can load these Statements of Ownership here. This will provide a little info on what was selling in the late 50's/early 60's. Now the earlier SOO's didn't really have any good data, but I'll post them anyways. First up, from Mickey Mouse # 58...okay, this is not working how I would like it to work, so I'll put the issue numbers here. First MM 58, then 70, 76, 92, 99, 111, 121, 125, 129 and then 134 Just a quick edit - MM 134 is dated February 1972 to give you all an idea of the date range
  16. Oh, as to why they publish these numbers really small. Mainly to not make it easy for your competition to know how good (or bad) your issues are selling. I fricken had to get out a jeweler's loop to read the numbers in the before mentioned Good Old Days magazine
  17. I remember reading, years ago, that any publisher that uses the US Postal system to deliver their comics or magazines has to include these statements once a year. (In fact my current "Good Old Days" magazine had a SOO printed in (microscopically - really tiny) in the December issue). My Dells that I am scanning have Statements of Ownership numbers in them too. The earlier Dell SOO's did not have the print run numbers listed, only the issues from the late 50's/early 60's had actual numbers. In scanning my collection, I started with my Disney Dells and I make three or four different page scans per book: Front Cover, Back Cover, Indicia page, and Statement of ownership if it is in the book. If I think of it when I get home tonight, I'll post some Disney SOO's
  18. Now I'm one of those people who doesn't buy many new comics, so maybe what I am about to mention could already be happening, but if it isn't: How about an index telling me where I am in the story? It would be nice if maybe the last page, or even the inside front cover, would state "This is Chapter x of a xx chapter story" and maybe list out which issue has the first chapter of the new story, along with which comics continue it. So you would have a list of all of the different comics that make up the story arc, instead of making me dig through online forums and such to find which issues or titles belong with the story. I know, I know, that some stories may say on the last page "continued in issue x of title x", but that's not enough for me. I think it would help to know ahead of time how many and what comics make up the story.
  19. In regards to new comics: Yes, there are two or three shops near me, none of which will offer me a nickel off cover price. I understand that a brick and mortar place needs to make a profit, but to not even give me a penny off just kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth. (However, I have bought older drek from their dollar bins now and then). Yeah, I could probably get some token 5% or so off by committing to buying a certain amount every month, but I'm not ready to do that at this time. I guess I was kind of spoiled by my old shop, where from 1984 to 1998 I usually got 20% or more off cover prices. Back then I'd spend any wheres from $1,200 to $2,000 a year on new comics. That's when cover prices were maybe a third of what they are now. I think my old shop even offered discounts based on the purchases you made all at once, like so much off if you spent $50 or more and so forth. I've yet to see a volume discount offer with the current places. There's no incentive for me to drive the half hour/forty-five minutes to the nearest shop when I can just click the mouse to get what I want sent to my door for the same price. At 3 for $5 the Meijer's bags got me back in the game for a bit, even though the comics were n.o.s. (new old stock) and not the newest issues.
  20. Yeah, That's what I had thought also when seeing all of these random comics. When I was really young and was first buying comics this used to annoy me - having to wait for another month for the story to continue. It annoyed me so much way back then, that I only would buy comics that had a complete story, which is why I never bought too many DC's or Marvel Super hero books back in the day. Once I found a LCS that would pull comics for me, then I jumped in to getting them. I think I bought one of each DC comic that was published from 1984 up to my LCS's closing in 1998. (I didn't buy any Marvel's, but an old roommate did, and this story I post in a new thread sometime this winter.)
  21. @01TheDude I only looked at the front and if I saw a duplicate I just skipped it. I only switched back two packages after randomly grabbing the 18 packs - there were quite a few different books.
  22. So I decided to check out Meijer's comic supply yesterday and today. I bought 20 packages total. I was at a smaller Meijer store yesterday and they only had two bags so I grabbed them, then today I went to another Meijer and it had one bag, but someone had cut a two inch slit in the bottom of it, so I left it. Then the next Meijer I tried I think maybe had 50 bags or so, so I grabbed 18 more so I had a twenty bag sample. I figured that would give me an idea of what was being offered. All of the comics were from Marvel, with the oldest have an indicia date of September 2015, and the newest being dated February 2016. The comics I am guessing came from a warehouse or something as they were just as new as any new issue I can get from a LCS. Edit: just to add - For $1.67 a book I think it was a good deal for new books. I'm thinking someone will chime in and tell me they are all drek or something, but since I have not read many new books in recent years, it is worth it to me to get a majority of these for less than cover price, which amounted to $238.43 in case anyone was wondering. These are what were in the 60 comics I got. Title Issue No. Qty 1872 1 1 Age of Apocalypse 1 1 All-New Hawkeye 1 1 Amazing Spider-Man, The 1 1 Amazing Spider-Man, The 2 2 Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows 3 2 Astonishing Ant-Man, The 1 1 Captain America: Sam Wilson 1 1 Captain America: Sam Wilson 2 3 Captain America: White 3 1 Chewbacca 1 1 Contest of Champions 2 1 Death of Wolverine: The Weapon X Program 2 1 Extraordinary X-Men 1 1 Hail Hydra 1 2 Hercules 1 2 Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D. 1 1 Invincible Iron Man 1 2 Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Shattered Empire 2 1 Karnak 1 1 Magneto 20 1 Marvel Zombies 2 1 Mighty Thor 1 1 Ms. Marvel 18 1 New Avengers 1 1 New Avengers 2 1 Old Man Logan 3 1 Origin II 1 1 Secret Wars 3 1 Secret Wars 5 1 Silver Surfer 13 1 Spider-Man 2099 2 1 Spider-Man 2099 3 1 Squadron Sinister 1 1 Star Wars: Vader Down 1 1 Superior Iron Man 9 1 Thors 2 1 True Believers: Captain Marvel 1 1 True Believers: Old Man Logan 1 1 True Believers: Thor 1 1 Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, The 1 1 Uncanny Avengers 2 1 Uncanny Inhumans 0 4 Uncanny Inhumans 2 2 Vision 2 2 Web Warriors 1 2 X-Men '92 2 1
  23. First Walmart, now Meijers with the comics? Criminy, I drive by and/or go to probably half a dozen different Meijer stores in my weekly running around. I'll have to do some searching now. I'll post whatever I find. (I already spend $30 a week at Meijer on cat food, may as well throw comics in my cart too)
  24. Wow, that tells me how long it's been since I was there, a few years I think, because when I was last there they only had about half of a short box of way overpriced comics. Getting comics for a halfway decent price around this area in recent years had been a bit tough. Most people think that they own a bar of gold or something and want way too much - I think a few were the ones from the 90's that bought into "buy multiple copies and put your kids through college with the profits" mentality.
