How is AA 16 still #4 ?  Bob sure does give a lot of love to that book.  I understood it about 7 years ago when the census numbers were comparably low but not anymore

That’s the first thing I notice. All American 16 worth more than Cap 1, Marvel 1 and tied with Batman 1? Not in my world!

The second thing I noticed was that only 7 out of the top 100 books had growth at or above 10%! Not in this world!

I haven't seen many with that big of an increase percentage-wise. I remember passing on a VF Cap 1 for $40K back in 2000 or 2001, and a VF recently sold for $395K on CLink, so that's a 10-fold increase over a period of about 20 years.

If you're talking about horror or romance books that could be had for a song ten years ago, then yes, ten-fold increases are common, but I don't think you'll find too many ten-fold increases in books that were already selling for 4 or 5 figures.

I remember a prominent collector/dealer had the Windy City copy of Captain America Comics #1 (VF+) priced at $65k and he sat on it for years! I think he eventually traded it away. Different times back then!

Sorry if this was covered elsewhere, but I've been off the boards for a while (stinkin' life getting in the way of comics.)

Anyway, as I posted on my blog this morning there are two new major books in the CGC census- both added on June 29th- a CGC 8.5 Detective 27 and a CGC 8.0 Action Comics #1.

    :whatthe:

In addition to the easily verified census entries, I was told privately, that the Detective 27 is the Church copy and the Action #1 is the Larson copy. Can anyone verify? As often happens searching for both books just leads back to my own site, so that's useless to try to verify.

Also, does anyone know if these books are in the same collection? It seems likely, but it could just be a coincidence. I'd love to verify that, as well.

I believe both of these are owned by...

Yeah, but which of them were on lunchbox covers?

If we're going to consider storytelling as a criterion for greatness, then we should add Toth's Battle Flag of the Foreign Legion.  Any list of "great" OA that does not include Toth is not serious.  But this is a discussion that suggests that Herb Trimpe made some of the greatest OA.

If we want to use monetary value as the measure of greatness, then by analogy, Infinity War is the greatest film ever made, followed by Avatar.  Does anybody actually remember Avatar?

I watched Avatar with my 10y/o last weekend, he LOVED it! (thumbsu

I get the price justifications (as much as I can) but this 33K page is not one that sticks out to me for art OR story. (shrug)

Then I would say reread the story. The entire first half of the series culminates on this page! After this page the entire focus and storyline changes from Warlocks plan to the secondary one and all the “gods” and entities come in. Before this page it was your basic superheroes in the fight. Definitely a pivotal moment!

These all sold in the last month or two for under $10K . Taste is subjective, but I’m not seeing much to make this page worth 4-5x. So I’d agree with the 6-7

None of those are key pages in the book. All are nice, but I think the seller priced it based on art AND story content.

The page that sold for 31k was artistically average too (nice), but it went for that amount because it was well advertised as the page before Thanos snaps his fingers. Key page to the storyline and the movies.

Most of these key covers under discussion aren't remotely the greatest comic OA by aesthetic standards (SS 4 & WF 29 excepted). My thoughts went immediately to whole stories: Red Nails, The Pact, Master Race, The Crushed Gardenia, Jennifer... just off the top of my head.

“Greatest” OA in existence is too generic a word. Great could mean expensive, artistically rendered,  impactful or historically significant.

Often times with nostalgia, that is entirely impactful. Something you had as kid that impacted you, and now  as an adult, has an impact on you again… and perhaps only you, perhaps not! There are many comics I remember reading as a kid that impacted me, such as Thing #13. I doubt now anyone really cares about that particular issue at all, but because I remember that as one of the first 8 comics I ever read, it’s high on my list.

There are a lot of artistically great pieces of comic art that are bordering on genius, but have very little value compared to other, less visually appealing pieces that have sold.

Its pretty easy to pick out historically important pieces, but as collectors, some place higher significance on one piece vs. another. Again, no right or wrong answer.

Bottom line is there are way too many variables in art (and from collector to collector) to ever have any concise and “correct” evaluation, but it’s fun to talk about!

I have no problem criticizing either an artist or art—if done fairly. There are artists who are great guys but mediocre artists and artists who are great but leave something to be desired as human beings. You can find a whole Facebook page on the latter involving artists who accept commission payments and don’t produce. Lim is not on that list, I believe, and I have no reason to think any bad thoughts about him.

But, I can still criticize that page for 33k. Basically, I think it lacks balance. The dynamism of the Surfer’s attack in the upper right ought to be mirrored in the rest of the page, particularly in the lower left. If Thanos is going to swat Captain America, why isn’t it given a stronger artistic role, even while showing the insignificant effect on Thanos? Something better than a slightly large rectangle was due the reader in order to set up cross-page balance. Even odd shaped panels would be an improvement.

As I have said before, I regard most professional artists as very good or better, with differences often a matter of a buyer’s stylistic preference than real quality. The page is nice, and my criticism is more lengthy than harsh. Stylistically, the commission for sale is a better example of his skills, I think, although it can’t be fairly compared to a published page which has a plot baked into it. But do I think criticism is fair? Absolutely.

One could also say that the artist intentionally wanted the most dynamic part of the page to be the Surfer’s missed attempt and any further dynamic piece added to the page would diminish that! The fact that swatting Captain America and killing him in such  a trivial and meaningless way is brilliant IMO.

Could the page be better? Sure.

Could every art page ever made be better? Sure.

  9. A key page for the series, but not a key page for the movie tie-in.

I had a chance to buy the Infinity Gauntlet #1 page that sold in Heritage for 22k a few months back right before it was submitted to HA for WAY, WAY less than its sale price. I didn’t buy it because several people I talked to said it was worth in the 6-9k range.

I also passed because it was not a key moment in the movie. It is the page where Thanos kills Death’s mouthpiece minion. Great page!… but had nothing to do with the movies.

Its hard to determine value on this title as pages and prices are all over the map!

the gallery is up and prices listed for every available piece

I priced some items in my head myself (this should be about x) before scrolling and looking at the actual price and was surprised that I hit a few dead on. But I was at 1/3rd listed prices on a few.

    a ton of great art

Is there a link to view the art and prices?

Looking at the page more closely, there are only two panels where you can see Spidey’s face, and two panels show Spidey’s backside (one of which has a teeny, tiny image of Spidey)

overall, a nice page, but not from a ‘ classic’ issue and personally, I prefer the ASM 34 page which sold a few months ago for $144K.  It is the superior battle page

I think they are on par with each other.

Both Sandman & Kraven are A- to B+ villains.

The ASM #34 page had the cover image which was nice.  It is also a full battle page!

This page has the 1/3rd splash at the bottom which is great.  It isn't easy to find those 1/3rd Spider-Man Ditko splashes, ESPECIALLY on a full battle page! You also get sound effects on every panel! WHUMP! WHAM! THUD! BAM! POW!

What more could ya ask for I tells ya!?!
