  1. I had a chance to buy that copy on ebay before it was slabbed, but passed because I pursued something else and my offer wasn't accepted. I believe the seller was Eides. Nice looking low grade copy IMHO. Should be interesting to see how much the book would sell for.
I passed as well but probably shouldn't have in hindsight

+1.. I believe he had it graded out as a 2.0/2.5 but thought it was around 1.5 which it is right now

I could see it going as a 1.8/2.0 raw...2.5 would be pushing it..
    :gossip: it's a 1.5

Would it be possible to do some math on the divide´between cgc grade 1.5 and 2.5/3.0 (in terms of procentage of paper-loss allowed). Just a broad canvas stroke?

Or may such a question be considered just a result of my brain frolicking joyfully around in the thin air of naive abstraction? (Merrywether might chime in here :) to supplement my vocabulary )

    lol

Indubitably, my good fellow; I'll see that chime and raise it!

Recalculate using advanced math, or rather Matt (as in Restoman). Considering the wonders his apprentice accomplished with a low grade copy of Cap #1 that was rebuilt, shown around and sold at NYCC. It was the talk of the show!

Whatever percentage of paper is lost can probably be recouped by leaf casting and replication of the missing art for the long term preservation and enjoyment of the book.

Of course, all this depends on whether one's cerebellum is capable of frolicking around the possibilities of taking a beater copy of a key grail book and reconstituting it to an NG with an apparent high grade in lieu of being satisfied with a low grade blue label which has limited potential in it's current state. hm

Oh - my cerebellum is indeed capable of frolicking around the POS (how limited however this window might be) of snagging a HG GA Grail. Its just me but I kind a fancy HG purple more than I do Universal beater

Thanks my dear Merryweather for attending my post in such a swift and clearhearted manner. :hi:

  3. Hi.

What would be a fair buying price for a Captain America Comics #1 CGC 6.0 MP ?

    Thanks.

8-10 k is range depending on presentation,pq, etc

    Thank you Gator

visual presentation and quality of restoration plays a big role, so sometimes tought to "estimate" without specifics... (thumbs u

for a 1.5, this has great presentation IMO. Colors are tough to get bright on a Cap 1, and this one has it. Not sure what the BC looks like but a nice 1.5 :applause:

    http://www.comiclink.com/itemdetail.asp?id=917322

That's owned by a board member. The back cover isn't so bad for a 1.5.

There is no BC scan. But judging from the FC doesnt it look more 2.5ish ??

  4.

Whats the ultimate PLOD to own for the future ?

CAn it be any other than action 1. That said as far as plods go even that book (and tec 27) are getting out of even the serious collectors budget. So look to batman 1 and superman 1 and captain America 1 to be the most heavily traded

And even then one should be prepared to bring about $5k (or more) to the table for a .5 complete restored copy of either one of these, isn't that right? Even here it's a crazy competitive market since common collectors are looking for an *affordable* copy.

Damn - I'd love to swing it on a mid to HG E(P) Cap 1 :cloud9:

How much dough needs to be dragged to market for such a copy?

  5. I have yet to add any Timely's to my collection but would like to. What title should I start with, budgeting less than $500 a book. Priority on good stories, then cool covers.

    Human torch ?

    All-Select ?

    Kids Comics ?

    USA Comics ?

    Captain America ?

    Young Allies ?

    Marvel Mystery ?

    Sub-mariner ?

    Others ?

Also, what is a PLOD ?

I'll jump in here if Lord GAtor doesn't mind (he's probably still in shock about Doohickamabob's being conflicted over his earlier response).

Most Timelys have really cool covers and action packed stories. For starters, given your budgetary considerations I'd probably recommend one of the longer running titles like Captain America or Marvel Mystery because you'll have more to choose from at varying price points. Captain America has more costumed character stories while Marvel Mystery has a bit more variety, but you can't go wrong with either of them. (thumbs u

OTOH, if you're starting out with the idea of trying to put together a run I'd recommend an affordable mid-grade copy from one of the shorter run titles to get started (Daring Comics, Mystic Series 2, USA Comics, All Select, etc.).

PLOD stands for Purple Label of Death (the purple label affixed by CGC graders to restored book holders). :fear:

The good news is that this concept has been mythbusted. The purchase of a restored book doesn't come with a death curse on the book or it's owner.

Hey MerryWeather when you mentioned 'Lord Gator' or almost read it as 'Darth Vader' :D

Are we still in a scenario "where purple does not always lead to sanity?"

Or have the market progressed away from the so called 'stigma'?

  7. Just blown away, blown blown blown away to see this mega books on eBay at the same time! (worship)

    And no reserve!?! :o

These are Dark Knight's books right?

You are correct (thumbs u I'm hoping the books will go to a good home... Also would want boardies to win the auction so if I ever have enough money again I would buy them back lol

Why are you selling them if you dont mind me asking?

    I would guess (hope) he's going after a 27.. :cloud9:

I did that once. Sold all my pre-Robin Tecs to get a 27. One of the biggest regrets of my collecting life :(

Yeah, Yeah ... and if a purchase of this kind came to the knowledge of the wifey she would probably tear off the last remaining nut before the divorce papers arrived in the mail.

Morale: screw wifey and have some fun. A tec 27 is a once in a lifetime item. :foryou:

  8. I was looking at (or rather: admiring) the Tec27 copies in the HA sales archive and I noticed that the brown/purple colouration (on the pipes and building walls) on the front page on these books were pretty different from copy to copy (not the colour itself but the exact placement of the colour). I thought that was strange since if these books were printed in the same "run" (or from the same 'plates' or whatever) - how can such a colour divergence occur? I havent checked the other colours? I noticed similar differences on the backcover with the many small coloured commercials.

What is the "printwise" technical explanation of this divergence? Would one not expect all the books from the '1st print' to be exact alike ... (shrug)

  9. This is only 1 of a few reasons I haven't and wouldn't bother with Pedigree Auctions.

I once ordered four slabbed SA books with Pedigree. The arrived to me sent in a USPS box designed for max. three slabs. Obviously one of the books had damage done to the holder during transit. Doug agreed to pay the reholder fee with cgc. But he insisted that I payed the transatlantic shipping from Europe to the US. In my opinion an unfair claim since the situation necessitating a reholdering of the book was a consequence of a fault on Dougs behalf - not mine. :(

  10.

Action 1 cgc 8.0 mod. Plod up for grabs at Heritage.

Thats a remarkable book. No :blahblah: on this book yet ?

    Thoughts ... currently 180K :o

I was expecting the book to go in the 100-120K range... I was high bidder at 89K before the reserve kicked in and currently there is no bidder willing to step up at the reserve price...at this point, I suspect the lot will pass, as 180K is way high (IMO) and I don't know anyone that is paying that for it (though of course, I don't know everyone lol )...

that said, maybe someone will step up and bid, but as of now, I wish it had of been a no reserve auction so that we could truly determine value...c'est la vie

    rick

THIS BEING A MODERATE 8.0 INDICATES THAT IT COULD HAVE BEEN A 3.5/4.0ish book before restoe.

edit: didnt see the caps lock was on ...

As such this book could be :blahblah:'ed up

    or

    :blahblah:'ed down

    ;)

your logic is sound, to a degree...unfortunately, the comic book marketplace does not view restored books as logic would dictate...once "restored" it is forever "ruined" to the previous grade (so long as resto can't be reversed)...this of course, was not always the case, but has been for the past 10+ years and I see no signs of that trend reversing anytime soon (ie post cgc years)

so, it should fall in line with restored prices paid for the book, which, is in the 100-120K range (max, imo)...

and there are several high grade restored action 1's on the market as we speak, so another diluting factor :sorry:

How would you estimate the current "possibilities" for a similar (i.e. HG plod) Tec27? we havent seen any of those for a while now ...

  12. A similar plod 6.5 went just moons ago for 150K. This one is three grade ticks above the courtcopy!!

I suspect this copy to be the one offered by Heritage a year ago under the 'buy now from owner' program. It sat "unsold" with a 200K BIN .... After the courcopy sale it "disappeared" and was no longer available (thumbs

  13. Rick what's this rumour I hear that you opened an LCS [congrats btw]? I'd love to hear your thought prcoess on deciding to make the jump into store front retail when we are in the enfant stages of a digital platform. Scary or one with little downside once you get an established client base?

I had a retail store for years (extension of our warehouse) but this will be the first stand alone "full retail only " store I have run since 1995... to be honest, I am opening it because I love comics and I figured this is a better way to spend my day than sitting at home watching abc.com lol

I am not expecting to make money, heck, might even lose, but I will enjoy it, and since we actually closed the retail part of the warehouse last year, I have missed the customer interaction (thumbs u

Sounds like a dream to me Rick, sitting around reading comics all day and calling it "work". :cloud9:

    Get a loife :makepoint:

    Whats it called? 'GAtors comics'.

    website ... ? :)

  15.

    Fish, Ciorac!

Thanks for your honest answers! I appreciate it.

If you are right (and why to a certain extent shouldnt you?) then I am fine and OK.

I find your posting generally quite relevant and interesting.

But anyway a little 'critiqal' debate is never in vain is it?: because you voice a critique that doesnt necessarily mean that you live en a cardboard box under a bridge somwhere, does it? (thumbs u

  16. well a dealer is not gonna receal his trade secrets; anyone on here long enough will realize it

Quite true. No dealer will EVER receal nothing. :sumo:

    iphone typing error doh!

anyways when buying/speding big on a car you don't ask advice from the car dealer; big watch-don't ask advice from the watch salemans.... same applies to the boards here; especially if its someone that has a book he or she wants to sell or buy

Just to bad that all the were selling the ordinary Joe-Schmoe doesnt hold up: for instance that 'the boards are for entertainment as well as education', etc, etc.

This is void in light of the fact that "center" knowledge (about developmental trends regarding plods, keybooks, prices etc) circulates in rather tightly controlled closed networks. That is as PM-loops for selectees and the guys (i.e. dealers) 'in the know'.

The "open" threads on the boards are then reserved for Joe Sixpack.

In the open threads the saying just goes like: "Buy it! - great price, thats a steal, restoreds are deathrow = stay away, etc. etc. So we got two boards in one: the PM /dealer closed board and the open Joe Scmoe Board with all the clichees and 'Just Buy it' frases about 'that book has definitely dobbelt in price' (thumbs u

(That said from me who is a joe :()

  17. :news:

Some copies of Action Comics #1 will be coming up for auction in Heritage's 2011 May New York Signature Vintage Comics & Comic Art Auction #7033.

Action Comics #1 (DC, 1938) CGC Apparent VF 8.0 Moderate (P) Cream to off-white pages.

    http://comics.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=7033&LotIdNo=101001

Wouldn't an 8.0 Mod (P) mean that the book was about a 5.0-5.5 unrestored?

An apparent 8.0 mod would have been a universal 4.0-5.0. I think the people "in the know" around here would say something like that. But there is a lot of noise mingling with the tones here on the boards. I have even heard voices claiming that an 1.0 book could be raised to a 7.0 book wih moderate work. Thats the problem: that it is free for any anonymous amateur to distribute their ignorance. Its free to mean anything on any matter. That is one of the factors that keep restored books in a cloud of unknowing. There is often a ton of 'meaners' meaning something. You got an 1.5 book? Well just restore it to 9.4. Yeah right!

The guys on here that is really 'in the know' on these matters - and have the hands on experience - are becomming more and more hesitant to share their knowledge. I guess to much $$ is at stake perhaps. But the types of threads I check back to on a regular basis the willingness to share knowledge is obviously decreasing.

Since this is to a large extent the dealers community rather than the collectors community - you can imagine that most knowledge on here circulates on PM basis. That is in closed networks. The open threads are then increasingly reserved for :blahblah:

Again - thats just how it is. Its ok with me lol
