  1. CGC has been in business since 2000.

They just started charging for notes in the last year.

If a dealer doesn't know how CGC grades by now I'm not sure they ever will. That is not to say that I know exactly what they will grade a book but I have an idea. And if I'm off I generally will call to see if I missed something.

I think everyone has an idea how CGC grades BUT there is still a grouping that don't care a thing about CGC. They don't submit, they don't buy graded books and they still sell a ton of raw books to folks that feel the same way.

And to be honest I don't feel that is necessarily a bad thing as long as they are consistent in their grading and pricing and you know what you are getting. If you know Harley's 9.4 raw is only going to be an 8.0/8.5 CGC then it shouldn't be purchased in the hopes it can press out to his assigned grade.

For me personally, when CGC first came along I spent hours and hours and submitted hundreds of books to learn how they graded and what counted off. A lot was pretty surprising because at that time I never even thought about some of those deductions on high grade books. It made me pretty successful at submissions but that's what I was looking for at the time.

Some people adjust to change well, some not at all and some go along just enough to get by. I think as buyers we have some of the responsibility to know how someone else grades and then just be aware of that when we submit books.

There's a lot of guys out there that are really fair though and easy to work with so I'll continue to buy from them just for that reason.

  2. I have always found there is a big difference in the way some long time dealers grade high grade books as opposed to low to mid grade books since the adoption of the 10 point grading system. Many still look at a high grade book and eye ball it only looking for the obvious defects and not the defects that CGC would knock a book down on, such as non color breaking dings and folds. In their eyes a nice looking, truly high grade but not CGC 9.2-9.6, is still NM. The defects on low to mid grade are more obvious and thus easier to assign.

  3. There are only a few issues of Marvel Mystery Comics that I need to complete my run. Almost all of the ones I have are in 8.0 or better. Number 61 is one of the few left I needed. There are only 2 graded higher, a 7.5 that's been off radar for about 10 years and a 9.0 that the owner wants krazy money for. So I decided to save myself about $7,000 and buy this pretty copy instead.

Great copy of a seldom seen book; congrats West. I'm surprised Schomburg didn't label the "Death Drill" to make sure it was clear what it was.

Toro's accuracy seems a little off; maybe he melted through the label. hm

The "Death Drill" sign is probably on the other side of the machine so it's victims can read it when they come down the stairs.

The "stairs" sign is up behind the wall.

    Nice book West (thumbs u

    Cool book West!! Congrats!

  4. Next best thing to a 1...2

sometimes I think it is harder to find a 2 than a 1!

Way back in the stone age, that used to be a common thought; 2s harder than 1s, second appearance harder than 1st. I'm not so sure they are as hard to find as the excitement wears off after the 1 as does the interest. Either way you wanna go Bat 2 is awesome! :headbang:

  5. One of my favorite covers ever! Has a particular store stamp that I noticed on a particular book end book posted last year, would love to pair em up one day! ;)

You've been very busy getting some great books :applause:

These old eyes don't see the store stamp you referred to though, help a brother out

I'll try and get a pic of the stamp but its on the edges of the pages themselves, says Jordans 510 E 5th, three times. Other book has exact same stamp

  6. Just got home from a horrible day at work and lo and behold this new purchase arrived. Needless to say, my whole perspective has just changed by simply opening a little mail!
