Oh hey what did that 71 end up going for? Oh I see it: $5300 for a 7.5 IS strong. I’ve always liked this cover too, but it never seemed to get much love back when boardies were asked to name their favorite covers

I don’t follow Planets generally other than the late run Whitmans… but these looked like strong to crazy prices no?

A few more 'breakout' issues among them I think. #19 went for over 8k in CGC 7.5 for example. Interesting that the #71 in CGC 7.5 actually went for more than the #66 CGC 8.0 [highest graded]. From my point of view, it was nice to see the Rockford #49 in 9.0 break $3k - I've always loved that cover. #26 in CGC7.5 broke 3k, #22 in CGC 8.0 broke 4k, and the list goes on...

Look at how much 'paper' has accumulated at the bottom of that slab.  It will be interesting to see what this goes for (disclaimer: this isn't one of my Caps in this auction).  I sadly never owned a copy of this awesome book.

I think the slabbing of books has really give the brittle and slightly brittle books out there a chance of remaining as collectibles a lot longer than they would have if they were still being stored in traditional mylars.  Good chance a book like this would be in much worse shape.

The last copy of Planet #15 I owned had brittle pages. It made me sad to see the slow accumulation of powdered paper accumulate in the bottom of the CGC holder, so I let it go.

It's also impossible to ever know how much factors outside the comic market affect any given sale.  Back in November, crypto was still going to the moon, the stock market was similarly on a major bull run, war in eastern Europe was on almost  no-one's mind.  Even a few weeks ago in the last Heritage auction, there wasn't a war and major stock market instability looming over the sale.

Even if none of my books get another single bid the rest of the way, my total is already above the number that was going to make me happy, so it's all gravy from here.  That's the great thing about having 315 books in this auction, no single sale makes or breaks it and it should average out in the end.

Is the Planet #19 CGC 7 5 yours, Mike? That book just broke 5k with four hours still to go. (If memory serves, the last copy in this grade sold on Heritage at around this mark last year.)

Last week, I acquired a book off my sig line want list and this week I am the new owner of one of Edgar’s books. It’s been a good mail week 😊. This is my favorite cover from the Wings run with issue 88 being 1b. Love the colors, Lubbers did well on this one with details and composition.B152D23A-6393-46B6-94DB-B9E5159D8C10.thumb.jpeg.cb1c8230f637b9719b4cc04854f20710.jpeg

Beautiful Kelly! By far the best colors I've seen on that one!

  7. The abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko was a starving artist in Greenwich Village who would bum drinks off friends at his local bar. He became famous virtually overnight and started to make lots - and lots- of money from his exhibitions. But when he tried to convince his bar pals, they refused to believe him. So he bought a Cadillac, even though he couldn't drive it. He had it towed to a parking space near the bar, and when next his buddies ribbed him about his 'fantasy sales', he took them all outside to show them his new car. This was told to me by a British artist who had met him. I never thought to ask if Rothko ever learned to drive...
