I visited Russ Heath in his apartment back in the 90s and he took out this story to show me. Even though he's notoriously critical about his work, he was quite pleased with efforts on this one.
It's beautiful work. The fact he kept it must have made things so much easier for IDW. Many of their art editions have to collate OA from a wide range of sources/owners.
Someone on a different forum collated what we have of Heath's work so far, so I thought I'd share:
- Flesh and Steel
- the Joe Kubert Enemy Ace Artist Edition
- the Best of DC War Artist Edition
- the Mad Artist Edition (the Plastic Sam story)
- and of course in Russ Heath Yellow Heat Artist Edition Portfolio -

Posting about my reread of Phase 1 (over in the 1000 books in 2023 thread) reminded me that I don't think I ever mentioned that I finished assembling my IDW Transformers collection a while back. My goal was to get the entire IDW continuity in hardcover format, without paying above retail. At the time there were several OOP volumes, but over the course of a couple of years, I was able to put the whole thing together, making major headway via Target B2G1 sales, and also conveniently timed reprints of some books from IDW. My goal was to get the whole thing assembled before IDW lost the license this year, and I just made it!
So, that's Phase 1 and 2 complete in HC, as well as the entire 2019 reboot series (which I've not read at all.) Unfortunately, IDW lost the license before being able to complete Phase 3 in hc, so I had to assemble several trade paperbacks (shown on the far right) in order to complete the stories. I also got several of the crossovers and spin-off volumes, though I'm still missing a handful (TF vs Star Trek, Back to the Future, etc).
I started my revisit of the entire IDW line in January, and just finished up Phase 1 a day or so ago. My thoughts are in the 1000 in 2023 thread. I'm sure you can't wait to read them, as I'm a fascinating person!
PS: Phase 2 V1 not pictured as that's the book I'm currently reading, and it's on the nightstand upstairs!
Congratulations - quite an achievement!

Any reason to pick up the first printing instead of the second? Or do they correct mistakes in the second one?
The first printing comprised 6,000 numbered copies and was termed the 'Famous First Edition', so the second print run will not be numbered. Frankly, I couldn't care less!

Absolute banger
Yeah - to be clear, that's from the book I posted. Whoever owns that piece has my undying envy.
I was just thinking, if only IDW could do an artist edition of his OA! Although they did print a portfolio of Yellow Heat [which I don't own].

Anyone find a good place to buy the Taschen Frazetta book?
Taschen will be doing a second printing at the end of April, so it will be widely available again then.

Flesh & Steel: The Art of Russ Heath is also the name of the exhibition that was held on 24 January 2013 at Casal Solleric gallery in Palma, Spain.
It chronicles Heath's entire 50 year career from the time when he was freelancing for comics in high school. The artworks include many previously unseen personal works.

IDW published a great monograph of Heath's work in 2014.

@ThothAmon I believe is talking here about the "no dance" option.
I would sell Straw Man's soul not to see Mr Bedrock dance.

Vanguard Productions reprinted some of the Atlas Wood art in their reprint series.
I have a couple of their Wood books. They've done quite a few. [A Western themed volume is forthcoming this year.]
