  1. I haven't seen it before. It appears to be a painting by legendary Marvel inker Joe Sinnott, who inked Fantastic Four for years (and many other books). I'd guess it dates to 1978 (when the robot Herbie debuted as part of the Fantastic Four in their cartoon) or 1979 (when Herbie was introduced in the comics). It seems unlikely it would have been after about 1981, when Sinnott stopped inking FF, and Herbie was no longer appearing regularly. What information are you looking for? Publication history? The painting's "origin story"? Value? What information can you share? How did you come across the piece? What do you know about it?
  2. It was kind of you to refund the $100 after a year. That was going above and beyond. But an additional refund because CGC's opinion of the grade didn't match your opinion of the grade? Unless your sales thread stated explicitly (and foolishly) "this book is guaranteed to get a 6.0 from CGC", then you owe this buyer nothing.
  3. As for the turnaround times, they have been really quick lately. Here are my last six submissions. Each takes about two weeks from the time I ship it in Massachusetts to the Sarasota "received" date that CGC indicates, and nearly two more weeks to get back to me from Sarasota. The figures below indicate the CGC received date and shipping date. Service: Press and walk-through grading. Received 7/7, shipped back to me 7/21. Service: Press and express grading. Received 7/17, shipped back to me 8/11. Service: Press and standard grading. Received 7/17, shipped back to me 8/18. Service: Standard grading. Received 7/17. Shipped back to me 7/29 Service: Economy grading. Received 7/17. Shipped back to me 8/5. Service: Pressing and Modern grading. Received 7/17. As of 8/19, still in "received" status.
  4. Before sending for grading, you may also want to learn a little bit about pressing. Hold a comic at an angle where the light reflects off the cover gloss, and look for small bends or folds that don't break the color. If there are significant non-color-breaking creases, having the comics professionally pressed has the potential to increase the grade they are assigned, and thereby increase their sale value.
  5. Ok, I'll bid the minimum $15 plus tree fiddy, making my bid $18.50. Edit--- I just noticed bidding in $1 increments. So let's call mine a round $19.
  6. eBay seems to have little interest in correcting fake au eBay doesn't seem to have much interest in correcting fraudulent auctions like that. It's more money in their pockets if they allow it to continue and they make their cut. There is one fun (imho) way to combat this kind of stupidity. It requires that you have a copy of the "rare" book in question, and you offer a simultaneous honest auction (that you don't expect to actually sell). In this case, you 'd need a FFE with the cover removed (or maybe just folded way back for photo purposes). Photograph your book and post it for sale, along with the original seller's description copied almost verbatim. However, in your description, you change the wording to state very clearly and in large bold letters that it's a FFE with the cover removed. State that it's worth very little, because it's incomplete, and you'd sell it for $15 as a good read. "Oh, and by the way, watch out for fakes. If you see somebody selling something that purports to be Superman #1 and it's 10" x 13", it's the same worthless book." Not everybody will look at your listing, and of those not everybody will read all that text. But if even a few do, you've managed to warn a few people about the fraudulent listing. Fewer bidders can translate to a lower price for the seller. And you will have educated a few possible suckers out there.

  8. By FAR the BEST cover of the Mad-inspired explosion! GLWTS!
  9. What I'm reading here seems to my layman's eyes to be fraud. They sell you insurance based on something's VALUE, but then later tell you that you can only be reimbursed for that item's COST. What if my hypothetical grandmother paid $2,000 for her house in 1943, and she carried homeowner's insurance for its current value of, say, $300,000. What if her house burned down and the insurance company tried to settle with her for $2,000, despite market reports, Zillow, and tax assessments showing that the house is worth $300,000? I get that insurance companies regularly try to obtain as low as possible a market value for payout, but they still base premiums and payouts on VALUE, not cost. If her insurance company based premiums on value, sold her insurance to cover the house's value, and then after she had a claim told her that payouts are based only on cost, it would be fraud. I'm glad I'm reading this story after my most valuable comic book, Phantom Lady 17, came back from Sarasota safely. I'm curious as to whether anybody else on the boards has had a similar bait-and-switch situation with USPS insurance (registered mail or otherwise).
  10. What an awesome book! It would go well displayed with my War Fury #1 and Horrific #3. Not an exact swipe, but very similar. Somebody please buy this and remove the temptation..
  11. Seeing this cover, I'm always reminded of what Coulton Waugh said about it in "The Comics" (1947). Take a typical comic-book cover of World War II days. Scene, a Jap wireless shack, through whose open door is seen a vessel being dive-bombed and bursting into flames. Which side is that ship on? It isn't obvious. In the foreground a Jap is sending a message under difficulties; he screams, revealing hideous buck-teeth as he sends. A baseball bat swung by a tough youngster has smashed him on the head in a white explosion. Another Jap, with bloody Samurai sword in one hand, spitting gun in the other, has has also been socked by a noble, hooded male in brilliant blue. Meanwhile a blood-red blond man is smashing the power plant with his gloved fists -- Hey! Look out! There's a green Jap splut-sputting him with a machine gun! Yes, but see that blond, teen-age girl crouching on the pink table; she's got a blood-red ax; she's coming down on the Jap's head, or is she? A hideous, shaven crook is leaning through a porthole aiming a blowgun at her -- Yeah, but see that youngster in the blue business suit jabbing a bayoneted rifle at the whole group -- But another jap is reaching at him! Ah, but a gorgeous superwoman with blood-red hair and highly stylized harlequin mask, through which peer blood-white eyes is strangling the Jap with one of her delicate arms, as with the other, she -- oh, well. The layout artist, on completing this page, probably looked hopelessly at it, figured it was a failure. He had used up every inch of available screaming space, yet, there was no block of ice enclosing a glorious, frozen girl about to be sawed in half by a ghoulish hellscientist done up in a white coat and pince-nez. Probably the editor, looking at this cover, said to himself, "That layout guy Prangle is slipping. We gotta get more action."
  12. WOW! That's so bright white, and I wasn't familiar with the cover, I was sure this was something that somebody photoshopped. Beyond amazing!
  13. "Um, excuse me, would you please put $795 of your money at risk so I can get $40?" No, thanks. The transaction is complete. I think the wording of your response is just right.
  14. Just when you (and I) thought the thread was over... Here's one more goodie to add to the mix. Seduction of the Innocent by Dr. Fredric Wertham, first edition, first print, second state (no bibliography). $250 shipped in the US. Dust Jacket: Paper loss at the head and tail of the spine; fragile spine edge. Faded red spine text. Some moisture staining, evident in the photos. FULL DISCLOSURE: This jacket was swapped from a different book. It's still a first print jacket on a first print book, and if I didn't tell you there's no way that you or anybody else could tell that I swapped the jacket. Book: Sharp copy. Slight bleaching to the reds inside the FC and BC. Clean and unmarked. All typical pages are present, including the 16 pages of illustrations in the center of the book.
