I agree that I have had high quality responses and that this an art and not a science, but correct me if I am wrong, but there should be a rough reasonable estimate of what a centerfold should retail for. If you were to go out and buy one today, what would you pay and expect it to be selling for?

    A restored 7.0 Sup 1 recently went for $66k.  A few years ago a restored 3.5 went for $45.6k.

If you are doing this for "money", are you sure all this is worth pursuing?  What restored grade do you ultimately think you'll get?

Not doing it for the money. Doing it for the love of owning Superman 1 and eventually a complete issue. I always like to know that if I ever decide to sell it (rainy day, emergency fund), then I can hopefully get the most out of it possible. I assume a restored complete issue goes for more than an unrestored incomplete issue (blue label). My ideal is to keep this issue and pass it down, but it will always be considered a keepsake first and an investment second.

All this exactly. I understand not wanting to pay "more than is reasonable" -- believe me! -- but there is an opportunity cost if you're passing on a centerfold at XYZ price and holding out for e.g. 1/2 or 1/3 of that, and an experienced seller will be aware of that too. There is no 'going rate'... this is not like buying an X-Men #1. How often does a Superman #1 centerfold come up that's on its own, intact, complete and not brittle? I don't know, but you may be waiting a while for the next opportunity.

I already own a partial centerfold, 1 page missing coupon, not the second. I own the back page ad, but it is the on sale now variant and missing a piece of the cover or back cover to complete my copy. From what I am gathering I should be looking for the on sale June 2nd variant to increase the value/desirability of my copy. I am also oblivious to how much it will eventually cost to fully restore my copy or if it is even worth it to restore or just keep it as graded pieces of a whole.

Single pages don't go for much, hundreds only, although some make $1k.

    Recent HA sale:

Thanks, but I don’t see any comps for centerfolds, the ad page (June 2) or a partial cover or back cover on any of the auction sites.

I think I only need part of the wrap to leaf cast and have it declared restored. All 3 are not easy to come by.

Is a centerfold worth $25K, $10K or even just $5K? If I make an offer on that eBay centerfold, I want to at least know it was a reasonable offer and didn’t over pay or be able to walk away and know that I offered what it is actually valued at.

I don't know that it would reach more than $5k at an auction, but...

There's a coverless, centerfold missing Sup 1 on sale by My Comic Shop for about $40k, and that one clearly shows the back page ad version "On sale June 2", and not the later printings depicting "on sale now"

An otherwise complete coverless Sup 1 sold for $55k about 2 years ago.  Who knows how the values of the 2 different back page variants will play out in the future.

Will the last page On Sale Now or On Sale June 2 back ad make a difference going forward in regards to value and desirability? I am slowly piecing my incomplete book back together. Should I be holding out for an On Sale June 2 and assume there will be a premium on them if the back page variants are a thing?

You post says what is a reasonable price.

    I replied 10k is a reasonable price.

There is a Make offer on that link.

Joseph above feels $5K is more reasonable. The fact is I don't want to offer far more than what is reasonable/fair, no desire to pay someone the highest recorded price for a centerfold. That is why I am asking what the rough going rate is.

still for sale. 10k would be nice price more if that's all you need.

Superman #1 (CENTERFOLD ONLY) Classic Vintage DC Superhero Comic 1939 CGC PG - Picture 1 of 2

Are you saying it is for sale for $10k or that is what a centerfold goes for? The link provided says $25k?

My question is what is a reasonable price for a Superman 1 centerfold? Anyone can ask for any price, doesn’t mean that is what it truly worth.

6 months ago Blissard Comics (the dentists son) on eBay advertised a sup 1 centerfold for $25k. After a month the price dropped to $20k, then it disappeared. You may want to reach out to him for more info. Good luck

Evidently it didn’t sell at either price. What would you consider is the current fmv for a centerfold?

  9. Could you please assist me in finding the going rate for a Superman 1 Centerfold and let me know how easy or difficult it is to find one?

Additionally, I am also searching for the last page of Superman 1, and I'm curious if it matters whether I purchase the available now or June 2nd Action Comics 14 page.

Lastly, I'm wondering if fragments of Superman 1 cover are available. I assume that a fragment could be leaf-cast and still be considered original cover/wrap? I'm considering what it would take to complete and restore my issue and the cost for restoration. Any help or information would be highly appreciated.

We have apparently decided that the operative rule is not Occam's Razor but Owner's Razor:  Whatever answer explains all the variables and concludes that my book is not a second printing or second state first printing, that is the correct answer.

For Superman 1 owners, try this:  If your book has the Action 14 "now on sale" ad -- it was printed before the books with ads saying "on sale June 2nd" because they originally thought the books would be on sale at the same time, hence the words "now on sale"  When the book was printed , they realized the Action comic was not on sale yet, stopped the presses and changed the ad to read "on sale June 2"

If only this was the case, but assume the issues with the On Sale Now are 2nd/3rd printing.

    Sweet!

Based upon my previous question and proof now of a signed CGC copy, not the other guy. How much would a copy like this, exact same condition go for roughly on the open market today? 1.0 prices have changed vastly over the years.

I'm not so sure about that.

This page just sold for $810

Image 1 - BATMAN #1 1940 CGC 32nd Page ONLY Restored 1st Appearance of JOKER & Death PG!

and this page sold for $1800

Image 01 - BATMAN #1 CGC NG ( PG single page ) First Joker & Catwoman 1940 Grail Page 6

Not wraps. Pages. We already know the first Joker splash has sold over $6K before. There is one more Joker splash plus 12 more pages. I think you get $25K out of the joker pages and origin page easy. Then you have the Catwoman story and monster story to go.

Wow! I have 2 single pages around somewhere. Didn't realize they were going for that much.

Wow! I thought it would be worth 6K max. Maybe I should consider selling mine. I imagine the max I will be able to get for mine is 7K, again it is a rough 1.0, but does have a Stan Lee verified sig, when it was still legible and neat.

So, this book sold for approximately $10,000 per point. I wonder if that holds up with higher grades.

I garnered the following information from GPAnalysis. I have only analyzed books that were sold in April, 2021.

    AF #15 2.0 - $17,500 - April 1 - $8,750 per point.
    AF #15 2.5 - $25,269 - April 10 - $10,107 per point - 116% higher than 2.0.
    AF #15 3.0 - $35,000 - April 13 - $11,667 per point - 115% higher than 2.5.
    AF #15 4.0 - $45,901 - April 5 - $11,475 per point - 2% lower than 3.0.
    AF #15 6.0 - $96,000 - April 1 - $16,000 per point - 139% higher than 4.0.
    AF #15 7.5 - $156,000 - April 1 - $20,800 per point - 130% higher than 6.0.

As I expected, the price per point increases as you go to higher and higher grades. With the exception of the 4.0, the increases are at least "in the ball park" of each other.

How much does a rough CGC 1.0 go for these days and does CGC SS Stan Lee sig make a difference?

Probably the same or longer, unless FedEx, they seem to be lighting fast (3-5 days) regardless.

A very valid POV, my comment was in case that wasn't your position!

Well at least you have it for the future. However, FedEx and DHL (both for sure as I've recently experienced)...do not be surprised to get billed for customs services even though you don't actually owe anything to customs ("art" valued under $2500 is duty-free import to USA). https://usacustomsclearance.com/process/importing-art-into-the-us/

They will bill you "just cuz" they're handling it. It's junk, "something for doing nothing", we all know it, but they will bill it out just the same.

I have had more lost packages with fedex than I have had with usps and the brokerage fee that they charge is sometimes more than an item is worth. I have on occasion refused to accept a package from fedex or dhl and told them to return it to sender based on the exorbitant brokerage fees.

I see art posted here all the time, so I am going to experiment.  I have hundreds art scans I have captured over many years, is it against the rules to post them here to share?  Here goes a small dump of FF Splash pages.  If this is against the rules, I hope the moderators will simply tell me and I will stop.  If this works, and is legal, I will start a new thread and start posting my scans.  If not, my original offer stands for those interested.  Mark

Don't know why I am telling this story.  Maybe sometimes it just great to get near a piece of art, and/or have a brush with one of the masters.  Back in the early 90's I was selling some of my silver age keys and buying art. My friend the late (great) Keith Contarino was brokering a deal with me to buy page 5 of FF5 directly from Joe Sinnott.  Joe asked for 7K and I agreed. Then the price went to 8K and I backed out.  7K for any interior page at that time was really high, guess I just reached my limit.  Wish I had gone higher, but decisions are made in the light of current day.  No regrets, rather no regrets any different than not buying Amazon or Apple stock on offering.  Anyone know what this went for at auction?

    FF-5-Page5.jpg

Sorry to hear about the last minute price change. One would assume that if a price was agreed upon then it would be honored. Any reason for the last minute price increase?

I expect he absolutely will have a say in it, but it still wouldn't help the purchasers. Following up on Gene's comment, the funds would have to go directly to BINC to qualify, assuming there is any charitable portion over the value of his work.

Curiously,Jim may be getting an indirect benefit on the theory that a rising tide lifts all boats (No, I do not think that was his intention). Since the competition for his work has resulted in huge dollars being realized, a seller can argue the value of his work has been reset to a higher level.

2 things, if he is raising money and donating it to the charity, does he also get a tax break? Second thing, we also don’t know how much they will actually donate to the stores, as mentioned previously, some charities are better at giving most of the money raised than others. There are a lot of stories of charities giving less than 70% of each dollar raised, the rest going to overhead.
