  1. I just saw a photo recently in the Toronto Star newspaper and am wondering if anyone recognizes the Superman? image in the background. Where is it from, who is it by, print, lithograph, ...? It may not even be an image of Superman, but an homage to him.  The person in the foreground, is a Toronto Star newspaper journalist who's last name happens to start with an 'S'. Side note, Joe Shuster used to work at the Star and the Daily Planet was inspired by the Star. In the comics Clark originally worked at the Daily Star, until they changed the name to the Daily Planet in 1940. Unfortunately, the journalist has just passed away and am not able to contact him to get an further details. Any information would be must appreciated as I like how it is composed. Thanks.

    If Todd’s people agree

Kevin will you know in advance if his people agree to VIP getting front of the line (same as with Byrne last year)? As well, as previously asked by someone else, will they be issuing tickets in advance (morning of, day before) or first come first serve, i.e. massive lines and people running to get a ticket? lol

The schedule is live on the site now. Only waiting for Marvel’s panels.

yes Jim Lee public signing runs Sat 5-7 in signing area A

DC is not doing a public Batman 80 panel.

Thanks! Will McFarlane also be doing a public signing in the signing area?

The panel is part of the package, they start with the talk, then move to signing right afterwards. It's expected to run from 6-8 Saturday evening.

Will there also be a public Jim Lee signing? As well, will there be a public Batman 80 event?

    1. Will Jim Lee be doing a public signing? Yes.

    2. Do I know what days he'll be attending? Sort of. Definitely Saturday, possibly more.

    3. Do I know what days Todd will be attending? No, I don't yet know what days he will be attending.

    4. Very dramatic. No, it was not cut in half last year. In 2017 the area was reduced to two signing areas, in 2018 it was restored to 3. What disappeared was the curtaining on the right side and instead the area was left open so that space could be used for lines at the Comic Sketch Art tables since the CSA creator signings take place at their booths and many are big name creators like Capulo, Finch, etc.

    5. Signings at the Comic Sketch Art table are run by CSA. If the queues in the signing area are available, we have used them to line people up for a big signing in their area so as not to clog the aisles and we do our best to ensure VIPs are respected at the biggest signings.

That being said, there was an idea for 2019 that is still being developed I'm not at liberty to discuss yet.

Also, I understand the frustrations, but anyone who threatens a volunteer or staff member loses their line privileges.

Thanks Kevin, I appreciate the response and agree that volunteers and staff should never be threatened at any point and badge holder should lose their line privileges. Will there be a Jim Lee sketch opp package offered at any point? As well, will the VIP badge work at the DC booth this year?

    Thanks.

Special ticketed events are yet be formally announced (sorry I have not been given an exact date yet). But here's what to expect:

    - Jim Lee Ultimate Experience - 2 package types - 1) Regular and 2) Graded Comics (aka a Witness present and Jim Lee's per book fee built into the price) - prices and final details pending

    - 80 Years of Batman VIP Event - similar to Dallas and Orlando, but the participants will be based around the creators appearing at the show price and details pending

    - a Tim Sale Sketch Package - sketch and roundtable discussion for a limited number of people, price and details pending

    - Venom VIP - similar to Dallas and Orlando, participants based around the creators appearing at the show price and details pending

That's all I'm aware of at the moment. Details for these will be announced first to VIPs and then to everyone else very soon.

Will the 80 Years of Batman be a ticketed only event or will there also be a public event? Same thing with Jim Lee, will he be having any public events or panels or just the ticketed Experience?

  7. Will Jim be doing any public signings this year or only at his experience? Do you also know which days he will be attending? Same with McFarlane?

As well, will last years issues with public signings be resolved this year? The public signing area on the comic side was cut in half last year and most signings occurred at the artists booths, which resulted in major confusion on where pass holders stand and congestion. VIP pass holders seemed to be an afterthought last year and had to jump through hoops or hunt for event organizers to get front of the line privileges. Will VIP pass holders be able to get front of the line access at public signings in the comic area and does that also apply to the mass signings at the artists booths?

Thank you Kevin for all of your hard work!

  8. When comics and OA were being purchased in the 60s or 70s was it for the love of the genre or for how much it will appreciate in value? Foster the love of the genre and characters and future interest will pick up. Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! cards are popular because of the fun factor, cheap investment and potential to get a rare card for the price of a cheap one. Less push on value. Cheap entry point for all, which is what comics were.

A week ago I witnessed a fan rip into Brett Breeding for charging for signatures and Brett tore into him too. You essentially summarized the discourse between the two in your post.

As mentioned previously a 2 tier system, but that will eventually will be abused as well. There needs to be something to get kids interested in the hobby, which may not help maintain the current prices of OA or keys, but at least the genre. Lower cost of current comics is an essential.

I 100% agree with this assessment. It reflects my current experience too.

Flippers, facilitators, ebay, ... Have prompted prices to skyrocket. When an artist tells you that their sig or sketch is going for X much on eBay and want the same price to get their share of the pie, I get it, but does it do more harm than good to promote the industry. Something needs to change for the health of the industry.

  11. I don't know if there is any truth to this statement, but could this whole speculation market and everyone wanting their piece of the pie be decreasing interest in some Superheroes for future generations? As in, when I attended cons several years ago with my nephews, their eyes would lite up when they would get free sketches of their favourite characters from some artists and would drive their interest in said character.  In recent years, those free sketches are hard to come by or nonexistent. When they walk by a booth and they see $50+ for a sketch, it does more to disinterest them, then continue promote their interest in the genre. They love Spongebob, but wouldn't dare drop $30 for the signature of the voice actor who does Spongebob. I even offered to pay for them, but they didn't see the value in spending that type of money. Could this whole capitalization by everyone involved, i.e. artists, writers, cons, facilitators and so on, doing more to harm, than good to promote the industry to younger individuals? Nothing worse than overpriced sketches, charges for signatures, $5 comic books, super long lines to dissuade kids. I used to love meeting my favourite baseball players and getting free sigs on a ball, once they started charging big bucks, that's when my interest disappeared in buying items to get signed. Maybe there should be a 2 tier model, 1 price for adults and another for kids, to help get them into the hobby and maintain their interest. Personally, I am starting to lose interest in attending cons because of the long lines, cost of tickets and rising prices for a quick sketch or sig. I love CGC, but also love getting a non-verified sig on a current book I am reading. What maintained my interest was meeting and interacting with the artists and writers, which is becoming harder and harder to do. That connection at cons promoted my interest in their work. Now they have less and less time to interact with the general fan. Which is prompting me to lose interest and reconsider why I am collecting.

    YOU FORGOT PEANUTS !

Went with a friend and his 6 year old son to a local theme park. They had Snoopy walking around, he looked at Snoopy and then turned to his dad and asked him where was the Paw Patrol characters? Which the park didn't have any of. He didn't really know who Snoopy was or care for him. When the strip ended, so did the fascination in Peanuts. Snoopy is popular in Japan, but not enough to continue to drive the demand and prices for Peanuts OA. The prices will eventually start to drop for the art. Can't see the next generation paying $20,000 for a Peanuts Sunday Strip.

Sounds less bat”mess” crazy than it did before but if you’re moving and worried about leaks and pests, just buy some plastic totes, but your art binders in there, and you’re done.

garbage bags for a couple months (particularly if it’s art in binders in garbage babes in totes) are fine I’m sure, but forget this dryer sheet idea.

I will get rid of the dryer sheets, most of the art is in either portfolio binders, thin mylar bags, top-loaders and some still sandwiched between cardboard. Placed in garbage bags. Nothing is loose. Just want to do it justice and avoid any moisture or any other damage until I get it back safely where it belongs.

  14. Everything that has been said is valid, but sadly right now I am between moves and everything has been placed in my basement, so want to protect it as best as possible from a worst case scenario (mice, basement centipedes and leaks). Neither of these scenarios are prevalent, but stuff happens and want to protect my art as best as possible until I can put it someplace safe again. As asked previously will garbage bags and Dryer Sheets negatively affect my art for a couple of months of storage? No different I assume, than if it was placed in a storage locker.

  15. Does fabric softener sheets affect the stability of paper? I was thinking of sticking some sheets in my portfolio binders, but I am concerned the chemicals in the Bounce sheets will have an adverse affect. The purpose is to keep any pests or vermin away from my art. Any advice or knowledge would be helpful. Also, I assume the smell from the sheets would dissipate from the paper over time, if I decide to sell any of my art. Also placed the art in open garbage bags, to protect it, but concerned that moisture will build up in the bags and create mold or water stains. Thanks.

Plods appreciate much slower than unrestored books, I always try to buy blue label. Not always easy to do since price, eye appeal, etc. Are a factor, but they appreciate faster and are more liquid.

Does the same apply to Signature Series books? What it is the feeling towards the value of those books? Especially, low grade copies.
