  1. You're welcome! I have a VG- left plus these - Going to CGC at some point: NFS:
  2. You should share! My original plan was to horde as many copies as possible. But I'll likely start selling my under copies to finance the purchase of a 9.6 or 9.8 if they ever become available for sale. Which Is a rare occurrence to be sure. Ya only 1/6 on the census. Would be crazy to see what the 9.8 sells for. The 9.8 is a Pacific Coast copy. It sold for $3410 in the May 2012 ComicLink auction. Unless there is more than one Pacific Coast copy (and there very well may be) it used to be in a 9.6 holder.
  3. Inquired on one of his books. The guy is a totally off the deep end Well he has been known to be a tad irascible, but I've never had a problem with him. He does sometimes suddenly mark up books if he notices a high auction result. Is that what happened? Asked him if the book we were discussing could be CGC'd prior to deal closure. He flipped. To him CGC is like a red flag to a bull! I found him willing to negotiate on price, which is more than I can say for many of the consignors on CConnect & CLink, but his grading was much looser than mine on the one book I purchased. Basically, his 9.0 was my 7.0. (It was an inexpensive book, so I just kept it.) One area where he doesn't conform to current CGC grading is stains. We all know that CGC--particularly in recent years--hammers stains. He holds to the older view that takes a more lenient view of stains. +1 my one issue was stain related...but in his defense it is not easy to accurately judge the impact of a stain. In his case, he's not trying to judge the impact with CGC. He considers CGC grading completely invalid. If you want to buy from him, you'll have to learn his grading and make an offer accordingly. I understand his position with respect to CGC, but when he says something is a 7.0 there is a perception he is representing that would be the grade, regardless of whether it was CGC, another collector or another dealer doing an impartial review. I don't think he'd see it that way. I think he'd say that anybody who doesn't like his grading can go buy their books somewhere else. To him, his opinion is the only one that matters. That's my impression, anyhow. Tomorrow's Treasures has a deep inventory in golden and silver age books, and not a single CGC-certified one that I have seen (and I have flipped through every single listing on the site on more than one occasion). That's not necessarily a problem, except that in this day and age it's not possible to have a raw inventory like that without many of them having been removed from CGC holders. So, is Richie removing them from holders and then "regrading" based on his own "grading system"? If this is indeed a practice of his (even if his grades are sometimes the same as CGC's grades), then previous CGC grades are being withheld from the buyer, which I think is not right, not for a pro dealer. My questions around the above (these are not accusations, just questions) are the main reason I have not done more business there.
  4. Don't feel so bad. There have only been like 2 new ones. They took another long break during the Olympics.
  5. Not sure that I agree with the author's premise. I don't know that much of the audience expected monumental events involving key Marvel characters right out of the gate. I'd have been happy simply with more reminders that we're in the Marvel Universe. Appearances by lesser known Marvel characters, etc. Read the article. I wished it was about how they were going to stop telling sucky stories and start telling good stories. Less concerned about how much the show "feels like a Marvel movie".
  6. A few books I picked up last weekend at a comic shop I passed by
  7. David paid quickly and was pleasant to deal with. A great transaction, thanks!
  8. How big is the glass? Did you crop that image down tightly or is that pretty much the limit of the image dimensions?
  9. If money weren't an object i'd still get an HP 8300. When it came out a few years back it was a $500 MSRP scanner. Now you probably pay more for shipping than the scanner itself. I scanned a negative with it as well and the result was f-ing amazing in my opinion. I'll post some sample scans and settings in a bit. Thanks. To contribute to the thread, here is Staples' Xerox machine, charging sometimes $2 an image, sometimes $2 for the first only and pennies for subsequent images: Maybe I should start charging for color adjustments Thanks! I have been experimenting with adjustments these past weeks. I use a tool I bought a couple years back called SnagIt and typically jack a setting called "histo-contrast" up to 50% or 75%, whatever looks better. Here are the results. They know me at the local Staples now and are charging me 25 cents a side.
  10. I got this on eBay. Nice scan! I thought. (nice book too). Seller said he used a Microtek ScanMaker i800. Anyone have experience with this model? (Distinguished Competition name redacted.)
  11. I have the Brother MFC-J6710DW, bought new from Staples. Wanted to scan large artwork (and print, fax etc). I get the same results - it absolutely sucks for slabs.
  12. Things that Joe Collector does not like: 1. Coke 2. Speedos 3. Cavemen
  13. The first appearance of the "Jack Monroe" Bucky is Young Men #24. It wasn't meant to be him at the time but it was retconned in the 70's. Cool - I remember that from OHOTMU Wait, what about Bucky's post-war adventures in Captain America Comics? It was retconned that any Cap and Bucky in Captain America Comics after 1945 were other people taking on the persona's. I know but I assumed Jack Monroe was the post-war Bucky which dude said first appeared in YM 24. I guess there was more than one substitute, I will look it up, thanks. (Fred Davis, got it)

  16. Sorry, but that doesn't agree with the known rules of time and space, and I have never seen those issues noted like that. It's always "First Appearance of Him" with notation of "(Becomes Warlock)" or similar notation in brackets. The Warlock character design, name, costume, powers, and Soul Gem did not exist until 1972, so it's impossible for Warlock to appear earlier. FF67 is still a correct answer to that question. When was Cary Grant born? 1904. Is that what I want to see on the label? No, it should be "1st appearance of Him who becomes Adam Warlock" or something to that effect. But it doesn't change the fact that it is an acceptable answer.
  17. I don't think THAT book would ever be expensive. By the way I like the speech bubble you added to the Falcon.
  18. Great polls. Regarding them - Him is Warlock, Warlock is Him. Him was originally known as Him, then later he was known as Warlock. An important development in this character's life, no doubt. Cary Grant is Archibald Leach. Archibald Leach is Cary Grant. Names can be changed, they are not so important. So can clothes, jewelry and other accoutrements. FF #67 and Marvel Premiere #1 are both correct answers to the question "What is the first appearance of Warlock?" Obviously, FF 67 & Thor 165 came first. Do you prefer to own MP 1 over any of these other books? That's up to you. Should MP 1 be worth more than Thor 165? Almost every other example in the market proves that the earlier appearance is more coveted. I say almost - the first cover appearance of Black Canary in Flash 92 is listed as worth more in the OSPG than her first appearance in Flash 86. Should the label on MP 1 be changed? Actually I think the label on Giant Size Creatures #1 should be changed. Technically both notations are correct but I think "1st appearance" is thrown around too much and prefer the more descriptive notations "Cat becomes Tigra" & "Him becomes Adam Warlock."
  19. Nope, that was Him, a Speedo-wearing caveman that Marvel later revived and transformed into the superhero Warlock. Like The Cat to Tigra. Same character. just built upon no matter how you try to spin it. + 1,000,000
  20. The truth is never silly, and Marvel Premiere 1 is actually the First Appearance of Warlock. I'm just teasing you. I have no issues. I thought Fantastic Four #67 was first appearance of Warlock. According to CPG, MP#1 is origin. MP #1 was bound to attract increased interest IMO, since there has been so much discussion about Warlock lately, and it being an important issue in the evolution of the Warlock character.
  21. I watched the new episode. I paid attention to 60% of it, which is up from about 5%

  23. Hi all, Been following this thread for a while. It seems like most of the suggestions are around getting second-hand scanners. I haven't tried these models but I'm glad they are working out for folks. What I'd like to know is if anyone has ideas "if money were no object" - i.e. professional imaging equipment, high-end scanners etc. Took a slab to an imaging studio in Manhattan and they wanted to charge me $30 an image - did not do this but I wondered if anyone knows what type of machines they would likely be using? I've been taking mine to Staples to have them scanned and they come out fairly good. One Staples in my area just got a new machine (Xerox) and they are coming out even better. Again, curious about more expensive solutions just out of curiosity - what does CGC use, does anyone know?
  24. This must be worth $100 million now. PM me offers
