The Catmans are highly suspect in particular. Money better spent on 1/1 superfractor patch auto basketball cards printed 8 hours ago.
The Catman 32 looks like it would be of better use in a fireplace, to be completely honest. I'll bid on it, just so Heritage has something to give the poor consignor of that particular atrocity.

This one has a similar top corner, though probably mostly production, as well as some vertical bends/breaks along the spine. As always though, it's hard to guage things through scans, especially the massive Heritage blowups.
First 9.6 I can remember with rusty staples on the back cover too.

Sorry, my bad here as I was referring to just the unrestored Universal copies of Mask 1 here.
If you include the restored copies, then this Promise Collection copy would be #4 on the list since there's 2 copies in CGC 9.6 restored including the Church copy here, and then followed by another in CGC 9.4 restored.
Nevertheless, it will still be interesting to see what this newest copy goes for in terms of its pricing level.
The only thing I know for sure is it will go for more than I could afford.

Would love to hear @MrBedrock input on these.
He already bought half of them I think. Working on the rest now.

It's strange seeing some of these golden age books with those gasp-inducing numbers in the upper left corners after reading all those threads in General about submitting moderns and variants that might have an imperceptible spine tick - is this a 9.6 or a 9.8? People roll the dice and submit a batch of fifty books and are happy when, what, maybe five come back as 9.8's? No way those moderns that come back as inferior 9.6's aren't structurally superior to their golden-age equivalents! And by equivalent I mean books with matching numbers in the corner.
There shouldn't be separate standards for books from different eras. That's why you set standards, so that they can be applied even-handedly.
Didn't I read somewhere that Heritage owns a stake in CGC or something to that effect? I could be misremembering it.
Consistent grading is the biggest oxymoron in our hobby.

Well, looks like we are going to be seeing some blowout record setting prices for this upcoming highest graded Mask 1 and 2nd highest Mask 2 here:
Will be interesting to watch these 2 copies from the newly designated Promise Collection pedigree in the upcoming Heritage Signature Auction to see where they finish up, although I believe the sheer volume of books from this new pedigree just might keep prices down a bit, because there is just so much money that can go around for these books here.
Especially since most of the other books from the early batches in this new pedigree collection have been graded into the CGC high 9's, so these 2 books here would appear to be downside outliers from a condition grading point of view.
Highest graded blue copy of Mask 1 maybe. The Mile High was a 9.6.

I guess what I am looking for is advice as to where to look for these artists and also advice about reasonably priced books. For example, I really would like to get a Timely super-hero title; when I have looked at Ebay, for example, those Timely books are expensive. Is there a Timely series that might be less expensive than a Captain America book? And what would be a representative book for the artists I listed above?
Alex Schomburg - I associate him with Timely. Did he work for other companies?
Charles Biro - I associate him with Crime Does Not Pay.
Jack Binder - I associate him with GA Daredevil.
Matt Baker - I associate him with GGA.
Jack Cole - I associate him with Plastic Man.
Reed Crandall - I associate him with Blackhawk.
Lou Fine - I associate him with The Black Condor, Doll Man, The Ray, and Uncle Sam.
Mort Meskin - I associate him with the Seven Soldiers of Victory.
Sprang - I associate him with Batman.I came up with this list off the top of my head. Surely, there must be other famous artists that I didn't list.
Expensive is relative. I'd honestly just pick an artist at random, and search for their work. Once you find something you like, your budget will adjust as to how much you want the book.

I had to set up a separate folder in my email to hold all of those email. I think they sent them almost daily. Got my 1st on on the 2nd day of the auction

It depends on what you call Original Owner... I was referring to a "Billy Wright" type collection, one that was purchased off the newsstand...There could be several OO SA collections still out there . If OO is referring to a original collector such as the "dentist"...there are hundreds of them. There is more and better material still not graded than is. If this is a new 5000 book collection "billy wright" style...and well then this will be the last one ever discovered for GA material in that quantity.
Until the next one, for sure.

You picked probably the 2 biggest pedigrees there. Thousands of them in each collection, probably.

Also @Robot Man, don't get me wrong. I absolutely adore both Mask 1 and 2, and have copies of both (restored, thus more affordable). I'm not trying to downplay the value at all. Just stating they aren't as rare as the perception was initially.

My two wins. That Jumbo 17 was a dogfight, but it looks so. dang. good. The Flash is one of the tougher underwater books to get, from my experience anyway.

I think there a lot of books that are scarce and rarely available. Ace books, Four Favorites, Prize, most MLJ, Speed, better Centaurs come to mind off the top of my head. Impossible and just go crazy on the better ones anytime I see them pop up. Mask seems down right common compared to a lot of these. Ship has pretty much sailed on these for me...
For sure. I think part of the problem with some tough GA books is the supply is so low, it keeps demand in check simply because people are unaware they even exist. That said, even with the brief time period I've really been paying attention to Golden Age books (under 10 years), there's very few books that I would consider super tough to find. Super tough to own is a different story.
Still waiting on my chance at a Prize 18.

Question about the scans I just posted. Do you think the shade on the Shock#9, VOH#27, and somewhat on Weird Fantasy #17 are due to CC over adjusting on the scanners? A lot of their books seem to have an orange tint in this auction.
You can tell how hard they juke the scans just from how electric the blue is on the CGC label. I've never seen a CGC label look like that in hand.

The narrative is always the same with stuff like this. People confuse scarcity and availability pretty often. Turns out there's not much that's truly rare AND desirable in the world of comics. Copies that exist and copies that are for sale are two entirely different things. I suspect that's kind of what happened with the Mask books, but I could be wrong. Somebody started piling up copies as they came to market, then tried to release them back into the market a short time later, only to find out the demand wasn't as high as they initially thought.

Or they could have simply left it as that could be a portence or sign of things to come with that being just CGC's preliminary testing of their new label that got out by mistake.
You just never know, especially when it comes to their ongoing shall we say "improvements" to their restoration and conservation definitions and their more than happy willingness to reholder your book for you with their new label, for an appropriate fee of course.
All kidding aside, it was good to see that all parties involved was able to correct this error before the end of the auction.
I'd be lying if I wasn't leading down that thought path myself. It's the pessimist in us I guess.

Yes, after giving it some thought following @skypinkblu post yesterday, I figured it must have been a quality control issue with CGC in terms of putting the incorrect label on it.
Good to see that CC was able to correct this labelling error and update their online scan before the auction gets into its final stage tomorrow.
I noticed the scan of the "conserved" book was taken down for a few days. Seems like a pretty high profile book for a mistake like that, but I guess it happens.

They changed the conserved All Select 1 to restored, as it should have been.

Nobody gambles to make money (or at least 99% of us don't). It is a big thrill to throw $20 in on a $1,000 book and watch the video to see if you are a winner. As long as the person running the auction is only bumping up the price by 10% - 15% and runs the auction fairly then I can think of worse ways to get a thrill. The house always wins in the long run but people still flock to casinos (even one's that do not serve free alcohol).
Because they think they've found an edge, or are somehow better at the games than everybody else, or are naturally lucky, or a million other reason why statistics and mathematics don't apply to them. Like I said, brain damage.
You throw $20 bucks at a 1k book 5 times, that's $100. Do it 20 times and you could have just bought the book from the start. That's Andy's point, eventually the math catches up and you spent more on raffles than you would have just buying the thing outright.

I sold a collection for a guy that I know last year. His wife wanted him to throw the books in the trash during a move. X-Men 1, Avengers 1, Spidey 3 and a bunch of mid 60's related books...but those were the keys. I ultimately traded to keep the X-Men 1 and we put a value of $3500 on it. It is ~a 3.0. It is indeed, insane.
Talking about sustainability of the market in a thread trying to sell a book is probably not the best look. Just sayin'.
Good luck with the sale Pablo.

I've already said my piece on the live sales so I won't repeat myself but the raffles are absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. Especially the ones for mega keys.
There's like 16 mini raffles...Sub raffle! Mini raffle! Micro raffle! Mini big raffle! Micro sub 1! Micro sub 2! Big mini!
What... in the absolute hell.... is going on? Its often spread out over weeks/months, you cant follow which posts are which, or whos in what, and what happens if someone bails?
To each their own but these are mind boggling to me.
Brain. Damage.
I guess I get the explanation that people are "getting a mega-key for a fraction of the cost," but they're also going to get exactly nothing most of the time they participate. Imagine reducing your collecting experience to nothing but luck. Just go to the casino. At least you get free alcohol while you're gambling.
