  1. Was wondering the grade myself. Classic cover, you gotta hand it to the artist as not actually showing a decapitated body even though that's what you're looking at. That excuse (among others) came in handy during the senate hearings. A very good point - E.C.s imitators rarely understood the effect of implied or implicit horror (not that E.C. were that subtle themselves) and occasionally pushed the envelope too far, becoming too visceral, especially considering that we're talking about the early '50s, here. Here's the cover to FAC 20......... Very gruesome and sensational, and perfect grist for the Wertham mill. Sadly that isn't my book......... Not an item to show the missus, or any non-comics fan, for that matter.
  2. Great (if gruesome) cover - funny how Fight Against Crime 20 goes for so much more, and the covers are pretty similar (yeah, I know, Fight Against Crime 20 is much scarcer). Looks like a decent copy to me - what grade did it get from CGC?
  3. Why press it indeed? It's virtually unimprovable........ Killer book with a great cover, btw.
  4. Galactus eats planets as light snack. He wins. Hands down. But honestly, is this the kind of discussion grown men should be having? Yes.
  5. Kudos to shrunkenhead for fast payment, and a smooth and friendly transaction!
  6. I remember the last HG copy of this book that sold on ebay went for around $1100, which was tempting (it was a 9.0). This beauty is marginally too rich for my blood, and does give me the impression that there are a few HG copies out there, but I'd consider going for it if money wasn't tight.
  7. Thanks Lantern - I was in the dark on that one. I do have one or two C8s in my collection, sold as such, but with no COA or pen mark - so there you go. Beautiful books with excellent gloss, nevertheless.
  8. Strange - I have seen Circle 8s without that rather distinctive pen mark. Unless of course the dealer was telling fibs.....
  9. Checked GPA and only one copy of WM #5 came up. It was a 3.0 that sold last year for $310. I did spot a 7.5 on the CGC census, but have no idea what it sold for. Would've thought above $1,500 at least.
  10. Props to davidking623 for impeccable service. If only all ebay sellers were as efficient and fast!! Cheers David!!
  11. Fabulous OTT cover by Cole. Those Star covers were never short of melodrama (and garish colors).
  12. As far as the icon pre-code books are concerned you're still going to pay well over guide (close to double) for copies in solid VG and above - but not multiples. What has happened is that collectors have noticed that most of these books are not super-scarce, with one or two exceptions (Mister Mystery 12 springs to mind). As for the common pre-code issues / titles, prices are indeed softer than they were.
  13. Kudos to Fantasyfootballbono for a smooth transaction. Cheers, Scott!
  14. How many hours did you take for that one? (Take a few more.) Are you guys still having your little tiff? Remember, spontaneity is the essence of wit, which is a bit difficult to carry off on a message board.
  15. And if anyone here knows about the long term effects of acid it would be POV. why? did he used to "drop" back in the day? By the looks of things, yes.
  16. Kudos to deathlok for a seamless and friendly transaction.
  17. That's fair enough. I ought to check out the CPG boards, but I never seem to get round to it. Should be worth a perusal.......
  18. most of my modding duties over on CPG are spent babysitting bugaboo, man that is a task in itself. So Bug's a giant among lesser men. So what? Your book shipped yesterday, FFB. Lmk when it reaches you.
  19. 'Bout time somebody piped up and said that.....only a couple of hours ago I was reflecting about the hobby with a friend (who doesn't collect comics) both of us having just watched Comic Book Villains (an excellent flick, btw). After I attempted to explain the paramount importance of grading and undisclosed/undefined resto in the hobby to him, we both concluded that I was insane.
  20. EXACTLY the lunatic fringe I was referring to! There probably isn't enough time left in the day anyway after you're done stepping over cracks in the sidewalk, storing and cataloguing bottles of your own urine and feces, and all those required bi-hourly anus checks to make sure aliens haven't probed you yet. Gotta keep all those undesirable, invisible bad elements outta your life! I wasn't aware that slabbed books that may have been pressed could be that repugnant, but since you provide such a telling analogy, I guess you're right......
  21. It does. Shame about all those coinees, but what're you going to do?
  22. Paul Levitz just found me one. BRILLIANT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW!!! That's the one I thought you would NEVER find... primarily because I thought I had them all hoarded in my basement... damn that Satan. Just when you think you've cut a pretty sweet deal with him, he stabs you in the back AGAIN. You did a deal with Major Khaos? All hail the Dark Lord Khaos! Clark, you did a deal with the Prince Of Darkness (i.e. Major Khaos). The question is, is the Dark Lord a benign ruler of the Stygian Depths (i.e. The Water Khooler) or is his wrath mighty and endless? I only ask as I wouldn't want to offend the Great Naughty One when I come to ask for my box of Buzzy 70s.
